Man I can emphasize with what he's saying to a T. My mom is from Nayarit and inmigrated to America in the 80s and my dad is white. Growing up, I was never close to my mexican family because of how far away they lived from me so I was never really raised around my mexican heritage. Partially because my dad is the typical white conservative Christian but I never identified with those ideologies in the slightest. I often caught got criticized by my own family on my mom's side growing up because I acted "too white". I couldn't speak spanish very well, I didn't play soccer, I don't listen to corridos music, and the list goes on and on. No matter what I do, I'm always gonna be an outcast but that's okay tho because I embrace it. I just find it very fucked that people you share a cultural background with who you are supposed to be unified with (especially your own family) will try to determine your worth and tell you that you will never be enough or that they're more of that than you are like it's some kind of competition. It's ridiculous that I'm alienated by my own people because I grew up differently than them. People who aren't mixed, whether if it's black, hispanic, or asian will never understand the struggle of not knowing your identity and getting disrespected for who you are.

But this isn’t a racial question. Is an ethnic/cultural one. One can belong to an ethnic label because of their family heritage. But besides heritage, ethnic identity is about that group’s culture - their language, accent, references, food etc. if one doesn’t share any of those cultural traits with the group, it’s understandable people will question his membership. So yeah he’s Mexican via his parents or grandparents. But ethnically the one group’s culture he most genuinely understands is black Americans, not Mexicans.

But besides heritage, ethnic identity is about that group’s culture - their language, accent, references, food etc. if one doesn’t share any of those cultural traits with the group, it’s understandable people will question his membership. So yeah he’s Mexican via his parents or grandparents. But ethnically the one group’s culture he most genuinely understands is black Americans, not Mexicans.
