    The giant single fold/cuff on jean pants is a "nod" or reference to working-class americans of the late 19th, early to mid 20th century. People use to acquire jeans that didn't have a perfect hem length and just cuff them up as far as they needed to; tacking them in place sometimes with stitches or just re-cuffing whenever they slipped too far out of place. In the 1950s the single large cuff became a trend with the Greasers and teenagers at the hop in general; while their parents had worried it was a sign of poverty (because you're "settling" for clothes that do not fit your measurements), the post-war teen culture saw it as "edgy".

      knowing this history makes the trend so much more interesting to me! though, let's be honest; most of the people wearing this trend don't know or care about this tidbit, do they?

      I feel like there are a lot of fashion trends that romanticized working class life or came from well-adjusted, socially privileged people trying to be edgy by suggesting poverty or marginalization, which I find pretty annoying. I've probably done it myself subtly at times without realizing it (I do come from a working class background but prob. not from the specific groups that inspire the trends). This would be an interesting trend topic video exploration.

      @@BC-np8cb As someone from the wheat fields, I think there's nothing wrong with borrowing from other cultures/socioeconomic groups as long as you have hold mutual respect for the people you're sourcing the look from. Personally, I've had to move to a more urban area for work and like you mentioned, there's a lot of romanticizing of working-class /countryside fashion. Literally millionaire (just over the mark, not "super, super rich") techies wearing flannels and mullets. However, they tend to represent the negative way to borrow that I mentioned previously; taking elements from a culture while also putting it down constantly. So all and all I personally am never offended if there's just basic mutual respect (which is separate from agreeing; you don't have to agree with people or hold similar beliefs; just treat them as fellow human beings) involved. Borrow with a friendly smile and a nod and it's all cool.

    I appreciate the discussion of how an outfit or a look can be cute but still not be for you. That's a thing I'm trying to keep in mind while creating my own style for the first time in my 30s: lots of things will look nice on you, but that doesn't mean it belongs in your wardrobe. If it's not your style or you don't feel confident in it, it's not going to get worn.

    That first outfit looked so chic on you. Different tones of red/burgundy tend to look really amazing with different tones of brown/beige. Also, hair and makeup can either make or break an outfit, and surprisingly, most people don't take it into account .

    I love wearing something that I call Corporate Clown which is sort of like the opposite to the office siren, still corporate but with color and prints. I like some of the office siren silhouettes but I don’t like the fact that everything is so grey and boring. I wear big glasses with this one and it’s not necessarily sexy either. Lots of 70s silhouettes and prints. I think there’s probably an aesthetic out there that fits this already but I’m not super aware of these microtrends.

Just don't see regular people pulling that off but that's the trend's fault.

    I thought going into this video that I will agree with you about most of the things, but I discovered how much I've warmed up to trends I used to hate.
    Especially the animal print. I have a cheetah print shirt and a cheetah print coat that I bought at the end of winter and I can't wait to wear again next spring.
    I also used to love polka dots for years. In the last two years or so I've worn them much less. Until I've recently thrifted a fun polka dots button down shirt. Now I'm back in love with polka dots.
    I used to think I was too big chested for off the shoulder tops and never tried them. This year I suddenly became obsessed with finding the perfect off the shoulder top. I'm still looking.
    Welcome to the burgundy club! It's one of my favorite shades since forever. When I bought tabbi shoes off of Etsy, I chose the burgundy pair instead of the black pair. I think it's such an elegant shade. And your burgundy dress is amazing.
    Finally, I have to agree with you on the short shorts (they make me feel uncomfortable) the cuffed jeans (I don't like cuffing them even when they're slightly long on me) and the office siren (I work in an office, so these are the clothes that I have to wear for work. I'm so annoyed that I can't wear shorts or a mini skirt even when it's hot. Office wear is the opposite of fashion to me).

    As a fellow broad-shouldered person who used to hate off the shoulder tops for the same reason, I think I have a tip! I realized the trend didn’t work for me in the 2010s because i was 1) only trying cropped versions and 2) pairing them with bottoms that accentuated my waist, like high waisted shorts and skirts. So my shoulder to waist ration looked WILD lol. BUT with the newer trend, I’ve gone for longer shirts and lower bottoms that skim over my waist instead of accentuating it, and it creates a much more proportional silhouette, in my opinion. And now i think it makes my broad shoulders look so good!!

    I think the single cuff works better with a heavier weight denim, because it'll hold the shape better. With thinner/softer denim, it ends up looking sloppy and not aligned with what that denim wants to do.

  • @jeanneobbard
    @jeanneobbard Před 26 dny +6

    I hate the giant-cuffs thing a lot but like you, I though eh maybe if I try it I'll like it... I suspect the cut of the pant has to be entirely straight at the bottom for it to work! Most jeans either taper in or out just a bit, so the smaller cuff looks more intentional and doesn't cause the dreaded bunching effect. lol I've now thought about pants cuffs for far too long on a Sunday. Great video, I like that you try to push out of your comfort zones!

    • @amapola9202
      @amapola9202 Před 26 dny +2

      I 100% agree with you, I think what makes this trend look odd is when there’s that bunching that makes it feel like it’s not intentional. I have a pair of wide leg jeans I did the cuff thing to (sewed it and everything) and I think they look really cool because the cuffs don’t bunch and it looks like the silhouette of the pants just continues.

    I think actually the off shoulders IS flattering to your body type! You look like a kibbe flamboyant natural which is known as the super model type (because a lot of models will fall into this catogory but it's for sure not the only way to look as a flamboyant natural!). According to kibbe you're supposed to highlight your traits, not hide them, and off the shoulders would be a perfect way to accommodate for the width in the shoulders. I think that the super wide neckline looks absolutely beautiful on you, but I also get the feeling of not wanting to wear something you're not comfortable in.

    Not to be mean but folding the hem of your pants twice does NOT look intentional. It’s the way they’ve been rolled for at least 100 years. They even sell pre-folded pants (chinos). You may hate it, but the exaggerated single fold looks intentional just by virtue of being out of proportion and different. It’s what made this particular trend a contentious in the past. 😊 all that said, fold’em however you like.

I train horses and sometimes have to do this for functional reasons, because my riding jean inseams are 4 inches longer than normal (so they are long enough when you are sitting on a horse), but that has not helped me be influenced into liking this trend even one bit. Now I just want to avoid doing it even for functional reasons.

    I LOVE the micro shorts outif omg, i live in the south tho so micro shorts dont even come across as a trend or as pajamas to me, but i think its because its soooo hot and humid that its almost required to wear shorts short or they ride up and get humid 😔😔😔

    I think in your polka-dotted look, the lines of the harness are competing with the white lines on the dress, and the underskirt is a good idea but ultimately not adding much. I think it would work with a different (but still polkadot) dress!

    - I like outfit #1 a lot, but I think it would click more with some type of necklace or neck/chest accessory with the open neckline.
    - The giant jeans cuffs never look good to me no matter how styled, even in the authentic archival 50s hip kid photos. Makes me wonder why when I too like a rolled hem at times.
    - I thought the red and black off-shoulder outfit looked really good and more flamenco-like than the other, but of course if it does not feel good on to you, then that's what matters.

    For the micro-shorts what you needed was to add a big, chunky low-slung belt around your hips, and tall black boots. Also a bit more midriff showing, maybe by hiking up the shirt a bit on one side. IDK if that's safety-pinned or what. Then it must have a bold shoulder bag and a delicate necklace. And the hair might work down, but mostly I'm seeing a sleek crown and a mid ponytail or braids.
    Not that you need to wear any particular style or anything I say. That's just what I noticed from the inspo pictures you showed.

    hi! ideas for off the shoulder if you ever want to try the look again: i would recommend a less bulky scrunched up fabric like the sleeves you tried, or at least a fabric that follows the curve of your shoulder. alternatively find one like the shirt you wear between shorts that has a dramatic swoosh to help accentuate the shoulders. also different necklines matter, even with off the shoulder. so pin and play with the neckline shape (personally i love a straight neckline closer to my neck with off the shoulder). also adding in jewelry can really change the look, especially chokers or large earrings. the shoulder space acts as a nice stage for the jewelry and the jewelry lets you change where the focus is in that area. lastly i would say a one shoulder on/one off is also a fun route to go - the asymmetry and 50% commitment might seem more appealing if you dont want that much shoulder bared :) hope you consider trying it again i think its a very flattering look on all body types!

    I have a long neck so off the shoulder and low cut stuff makes it look even longer to the point it doesn't look good anymore.. but I love off the sholders I'm sure I loved it since the 2010s haha I like to pair them with a chunkier short neckless to brake up the skin
