  • What is a radiation mask? They look scary in the beginning and many people are claustrophobic, but this video helps explain the process and show that even claustrophobic people can overcome it easily.

Thank you for this video. I'm about to undergo radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, and I have considerable anxiety issues surrounding wearing the mask. So much so that I have delayed my treatment by several months due to simply not being able to effectively deal with the anxiety.
In the meantime my tumors have grown, though the oncologist is still confident of a cure... I just need to deal with this horrible anxiety! 😔
    Reaching out for support. ....

I had squamous cell skin cancer on my forehead that gravitated to the left side of my neck. They got all of the Cancer through a number of surgeries and now I'm going through radiation, but just on the neck area. The radiation is just a precaution to nail down any microscopic cancer cells. I will need 33 sessions and I have 10 more to go. Their was an issue with my mask in that it was bearing down on one of my cheekbones to such an extent that I couldn't lie still. I told the staff and they were able to make an adjustment and now I can almost fall asleep when I'm on the table. I don't think I will be keeping my mask as a souvenir. I hope it gets thrown in the recycling bin.

I got chemo a long time ago and my mask looks a bit different where it has 2 pieces full head and it doesn't cover your mouth and it was super painful

Great video. At Ottawa General hospital, they paint the mask for children. I saw one painted as a Spiderman mask :o)

Did the radiation create the discoloration on the side of your face?

Are you allowed to go in the sun still?

Yes but I am even more diligent about using hats and sunscreen.
