    The Inquisitor's ability prevents bonus defense dice at range 3 because you are always at range 1, THAT's the benefit. He can stay out and get a bonus defend die while denying the same to his targets.

    • @fairygoodmuller8065
      @fairygoodmuller8065 Před 8 lety +4

      also, denying autothrusters

    • @garblechunk
      @garblechunk Před 8 lety

      +joel .nevill I'm not sure it works like that. Autothrusters says "If you are beyond Range 2," if the Inquisitor is shooting you at range three HE counts you at range one, but you're still beyond Range 2, so he rolls an extra attack dice, you don't get an extra evade, but you still get autothrusters. That's how I read it, at least.

    • @marcplourde4272
      @marcplourde4272 Před 8 lety +4

      The range of the attack is treated as range one, that shuts down autothrusters in the same way it shuts down extra defense dice for range 3.

    • @-Markus-
      @-Markus- Před 8 lety +2

      +Marc Plourde
      Yupp I also interprit it as Marc and Joel does.
      It says to treat the attack as at range one, not that the inquisitor treats it as range one.
      So if the entire attack is treated as range one, as the card says, this applies to all abilities on both sides.
      But i guess an faq will sort it out sooner or later.
      x-wing rules and card wordings is a mess and with every release it just becomes worse.

    However regarding the inquisitor's ability, I believe it doesn't only grant him the extra attack dice but also negates the opponents additional dice from range 3 as well as rendering autothrusters useless. pretty neat imo especially vs talonbane cobra for example.

  • @fairygoodmuller8065
    @fairygoodmuller8065 Před 8 lety

    the reason the ability is as it is, it means that when attacking, the extra evade dice and Autothrusters don't work on the defenders. eg, inquisitor firing at an a wing, range 3 with it being equipped with AT, it'll just be 3 attack v 3 evade

      One of their weapon technologies is the Markerlight, basically a laser designator that can make enemy units easier to hit and guide missiles to their target, just like the S-Thread Tracers in X-Wing. :)

    @michaelriley1118 Před 8 lety

    Great video. I really appreciate your commentary and find it interesting. When I got into X-wing I was always equipping ordnance but then decided with the game mechanics, it costs to much. After pondering it for quite awhile, I think most ordnance should cost 1 point and some others (like Advanced Homing Missiles) should cost 2 points. The reason I think that is because the use is situational, most require a target lock and all are discarded after use. When playing the X-Wing PC game you always had ordnance, which made me think they were inexpensive and easy to equip. The miniatures game mechanic is the reverse. In addition, the PC game would (in most cases) get a red (ready to fire) target lock at six kilo-meters (km). I think ordnance would see wider use if you could target lock anywhere on the board at all times (looking forward to that capability in the Imperial Veterans expansion with the T/B upgrade). I've not run the numbers, but I don't really see a 3'x3' board exceeding six square km. and definitely don't see range three being equal to six km. In the PC game you could always release missile/torpedo ordnance well before you were within range of your primary weapon or ion cannon. Granted you were not likely to hit your target unless it was a corvette/freighter/capital ship at that range - but if you didn't hit the target, all ordnance was homing so it would force your opponent to constantly evade or take the hit (unless the weapon self-destructed because it didn't hit something in thirty seconds). Another way to make them more useful would be to have a modification that always flipped focus results to hits when using a secondary missile or torpedo upgrade (taking chance out of the equation when deciding to use the weapon). My recommendation to Fantasy Flight would be to completely rewrite the rules related to missile and torpedo upgrades. Its the one part of the game that doesn't fit the PC game mechanics or what I would think of as 'real' world (as 'real' as a fantasy fiction game could get anyway).

      So I decided to do some number crunching regarding the scale between the miniatures game mechanic and the X-Wing PC game. For starters, I do think the primary weapon (Range 1-3) scale works in the miniatures game. If wookieepedia is correct, a T-65 X/W is 12.5m long. The model physically measures 4.5-4.6cm. Range 1 distance is 10 cm, which implies a scale distance of 27.78 meters. This places range 3 at 83.33 meters and a 3'x3' playing area would measure 254m across (which seems rather small considering a Nimitz class aircraft carrier is 332.8m). This probably just means there is no scale correlation between the model size and weapon range. In the PC game the effective range of the X/W primary weapon was .08 to .25 {km?}, which I think I need to clarify that I don't believe the PC game was very clear or consistent in the meaning of the measurement - but I always understood it as km. From many hours of flying experience I can say if a ship was within .08, it was so close it was very hard to hit if you were giving pursuit and attempting to stay with your opponent. The small ship base primary firing arc doesn't effectively have a comparison to the PC game. But if I consider the PC game .25{km} to be effectively range 1 (or alternatively 1.25{km} to be range 3), then you would expect to be able to acquire a weapons lock for a secondary missile/torpedo weapon and deploy that weapon between range 14 and 24 in X-Wing Miniatures scale. The standard play area (3'x3') is roughly range 9 by range 9. Giving this further thought, small ship to small ship combat, I think having an effective range for a secondary missile/torpedo of 2-7 makes sense. There's nothing in X-Wing Miniatures that gives you a distinct advantage for using a missile/torpedo upgrade when compared to your primary weapon. Combined with the fact you need to set up a target lock and then get a focus token to make the most use out of it - it hardly seems worth the hassle to pay 3-5 points for a one time one extra die roll at range 2-3. So unless you are Lt. Blount with Assault Missiles or Nera Dantels with any torpedo, what tactical advantage do you really gain for that cost? Can you think of any modern combat air-craft where the missiles have less than or the same kill range as the gun/cannon? Or where said missiles costs 1/5 of the cost of the aircraft? X-Wing Miniatures missiles/torpedoes just don't make a lot of sense to me. I will say, under the current mechanics the Imperial Raider with ordnance tubes is my favorite build for that ship - mainly due to the fact that most hard-point laser weapons are very power hungry and I want to make sure I have a weapon that can be used at ranges 1-3 to the ship in every firing arc. Since huge ships don't get focus (major draw back in my opinion) you pretty much need a target lock to make the most use of your attacks - so using a secondary missile/torpedo that can modify the dice without spending another token, I view that as a major bonus. I will say, if the Imperial Raider is like the CR-90, then in the miniatures game mechanic, it doesn't have the same bite as a CR-90 does in the PC game. Perhaps if it could convert one or two focus results on every attack to a hit, that would give it the bite it needs to be comparable. Thumbs up and high-five to anyone who made it this far in reading my take on X-Wing Miniatures missile/torpedo upgrades.

      Last thought regarding ordnance (... okay probably not) but I was thinking that it would be neat (and avoid a rules rewrite) if the cost of the missile/torpedo was for the technology not the instance of the weapon. For example, use your squad points for Advanced Proton Torpedoes (6 points) and then each ship with a torpedo slot gets an ordnance token indicating it has an instance of the torpedo. If your squad consisted of two B/W (Blue Squadron Pilots) and two X/W (Red Squadron Pilots) (90 points) add 6 more points for the Advance Proton Torpedoes and each B/W now has 2 ordnance tokens for the torpedoes and each X/W has 1 ordnance token for the same torpedo. Pay once and benefit the entire squad. In my thinking this would exclude huge ships with the ordnance tubes modification but I could go either way on that. If the equipped missile/torpedo helps your squad out, great. If the situation didn't arise where it made sense to release the weapon, you are only out six points - as opposed to 8 in this example (6 for the torpedo and 2 for Extra Munitions) which 2/3 the cost of a Z95 just to put two torpedoes on one ship. The economics of this variation to the rules makes sense to me. Of course I don't know anyone at FFG to recommend it to - oh well, I think I'll be adopting it under my house rules. In the event of a mixed squad where some ships have torpedo upgrade slots and other ships have missile upgrade slots, you would just need to use different tokens to represent the instances of the technology of the selected weapon upgrades. This approach would probably work well for bombs, but I've not given that ordnance much thought.

    • @a-blivvy-yus
      @a-blivvy-yus Před 8 lety +1

      That sounds like an interesting house rule for those weapons.
      I'm used to playing Star Trek Attack Wing (based on the same ruleset X-Wing is built from), which has a similar issue with its target lock-based secondary weapons. Unlike here, most of them are re-usable through either a turn timer mechanic or a "disable" token which costs an action to remove. The price is a bit higher, and they still require the target lock action, and an additional action or time delay before you can fire again.
      Even though the restrictions are less punishing than in X-Wing, ordinance tends to be much less cost-efficient than other options. A house rule I recently encountered was to simply rule that weapons which require you to spend a target lock allow you to ALSO use that target lock for re-rolls on that secondary weapon. I'm not sure I'd use that same rule here, but your solution sounds like an elegant solution which suits the X-Wing rules.

    I don't understand why FFG included Deadeye in this expansion. Everyone with a brain will run the Tie Advanced Prototype with its title card, which means you will be getting a target lock and an evade almost every time you perform an action. I guess Deadeye makes since for other ships that run both the new S-Thread tracers and other missiles or torpedoes, because you can just use focus for all your ordnance ... it's just not ideal for the TAP.

      +Jerry Jackson - I figure there must be some application for Deadeye with this ship since FFG usually includes relevant cards for each expansion. But I'm also not seeing it. Seems like there are better Elite upgrade for it.

      +The Cardboard Dungeon, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Deadeye is an odd choice here. Autothrusters would have been ideal since it's currently only available with the Starviper, but even Predator or Juke would have better synergy with the TAP.

      I know this was 1 year ago, but just discovered the thread. Deadeye allows you to hold a target lock on one target while being able to shoot missile/torp at a another. More useful on ships with multiple ordinance upgrades.

    "Keep finding new TIEs" LOL
    TIEs have pretty much the largest number of design variants in any SciFi franchise EVER.
    They are like swords in an MMORPG, coming in hundreds of sizes, shapes and stats.
    I personally love the TIE Hunter design and the Phantom you already are familiar with.
    Agressor and Opressor look great too, but not as sharp as the Interceptor.
    If you are interested in "alternative" designs, go to adamkop.deviantart.com/ as his gallery alone is already filled with dozens of TIE design variations, both his own as well as commissions of others (i have done one too but he hasn´t uploaded it yet).

    AH, actually the inquisitor could use proton rockets at range 2 or 3.

      @Timberwolf139 Před 8 lety +1

      +Dan Burrell No he does not. Jax's ability requires an enemy ship to be within range 1, but the Inquisitors ability doesn't actually make his ship suddenly at range 1, just his attack. So not only can the Inquisitor get the Range 1 bonus and not worry about Jax, he also doesn't have to worry about Scum Boba.

    The inquisitor isn't a Sith. Actually, the First Order is not even ruled by Sith; They use the dark side of the force, but doing so doesn't make you one (nor does using the bright side make you a jedi). :)

      @thecardboarddungeon8770  Před 8 lety

      +Elavion Dremorill - Are the inquisitors First Order? They're from the Rebels time period of post-Clone Wars/pre-A New Hope and my understanding is they were hand picked by Vader.

    • @Noinoi_
      @Noinoi_ Před 8 lety

      The Cardboard Dungeon Yeah, that's true, but they form an organisation separate from the Sith Order. I meant FO as another example.

    • @TemporalMeteor
      @TemporalMeteor Před 8 lety

      +Elavion Dremorill if you want to get technical, there isn't a light side of the force.
      There's the force, and the dark side of the force. Neutral, or corrupt

    • @Noinoi_
      @Noinoi_ Před 8 lety

      TemporalMeteor
      Not true. It's not referred to as such often, but there is the light side.
      The dark side is fueled by emotion, the light side by lack of it; therefore it's not even about the morality, simply about the way you access your power.

      What you're hearing in my voice is the result of working eleven days in a row, averaging 11.5 hours per day. I worked almost 90 hours last week. I dragged myself out of bed a couple of hours earlier than I normally would specifically so I could make this video for you. But, despite the weariness that's obviously coming through in my voice, I am excited about this expansion and wave 8 in general. I have the next couple of days off so hopefully I'll be able to rest up and restore the old vocal chords somewhat before I record the Mist Hunter vid :)
