Love outdoor space...my first ridiculously tiny patio was in my first real estate purchase it was an open air patio just large enough for an outdoor glass top table for four. Lighting was ordinary garden lights plus candlelight. I put a wall fountain on the wall observable from the patio doored living room...this expanded the visual space from the inside. Now I live abroad in a tropical year round Spring climate. OUR MAJOR roofed outdoor terrace attached to our garden and house is. an outdoor living room we are on most days 25 ftX 50FT a corner of which is my outdoor art studio with gallery easel. I happily paint garden scenes ala Monet...a dream come true for me. We have built in indirect lighting higlightling fountains and wall sculptures and plantings. We have footlights along walkways. And on steps....Outdoor cushions with Sunbrella fabric is easy to sew up yourself. We have a large built in. L bench area with easy drain boat fabric in an open weave and fast drain waterproof cushioning also for boats to leave outside year round. On the largest patio we have a sofa and two luxurious lounge chairs plus a dining area, for eight in that area. We have three upstairs terraces two are covered and one is an outdoor kitchen with pizza oven...we have as much outdoor as indoor space in this 4,500sq ft house. Heaven overlooking one active and two inactive volcanos.

One concept I’ve been trying to develop is furniture that does double duty: it can be brought in for use inside during the winter, moved outside again for the summer. Ideally it wouldn’t look out of place in either location. Love this content!!

Love the format of the video, lots of inspiring pics!! Just one thing, NO MIRRORS or be extra careful where you place them. Birds and insects fly against them and can get hurt or confused but above all they can cause fire if exposed to direct sunlight. I agree they are beautiful and I'd love to add one in my tiny yard, but it's too dangerous!

if you use outdoor plants, go with natives. you will help the diminishing pollinators by replacing their habitat which is getting destroyed by all the land development. loved the references, julie. really helpful.

Love this. I'm just starting to work on my deck. I have been thinking about adding outdoor drapes since I have a pergola over the deck and some kind of climbing plant for the trellis that overlooks my neighbors patio. I live in Prescott AZ so we get crazy monsoons during the summer and everything needs to survive those.
Sunbrella fabric is pricey but worth it. Check it out.

As long as the drapery is light colored, it won’t fade. Even Sunbrella fades here in Southern CA, so I’m guessing AZ’s light is much more intense. You can also try roller or retractable shades depending on your budget Kathy! I love bougainvillea and jasmine here, but they don’t sound like they would hold up 🤔 Your local nursery would be a great resource! 👍🏻

Great video! I love the idea of using a mirror outside, and I even have a spare closet mirror just like you described. I’ve been wondering what to do with it and I also have another with a carved wooden frame. I will give them both a try. Thank you for the inspiration!
