Agree with your principles and they can even be applied to small spaces. We lived in our apartment for 3 years and did nothing with our patio space because it was small and turned it some storage. Once I decided to upgrade our space, it felt like our living space doubled. Now we had another area for entertaining and the stylish elements extended the living room outward. The color palette was cream and black with green plants for accents and brass accessories. I laid down a jute rug, teak chairs, a drum style beverage table between them and a coffee table in front of us. I got gorgeous black and cream textured outdoor pillows, tall/med/small Smith & Hawken lanterns and tons of plants, candles and trays to make the space feel elevated. Finally we strung lights over the covered part of the patio and hung baby lanterns on the fence so we could have layered lighting elements.
The whole thing turned into a gorgeous oasis and gave us so much chic living space for ourselves and guests.

I’ve paid almost as much for my outdoor furniture as I have my indoor purchases. I used to go cheap but those things didn’t last in the hot Texas sun and ended up having to be replaced. Now I go with iron/cast aluminum and solid wood. Both can be refinished or spray painted as needed. I LOVE being outside. ❤️

Great pointers V! Thank you! We just completed our backyard project with a pool, patio, landscaping and I had to remind my hubby about the “cheaping out” point for furniture - we didn’t just do this massive, beautiful backyard oasis just to put in plastic chairs 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 We are still working on getting that “old” vibe sprinkled in through pottery but almost there!
We live in Houston so one other pointer I would add is think through materials and maintenance. We get extreme heat and humidity, so making sure materials chosen can stand up to the environment with limited maintenance is key!

Hi Valentina! This vid was a great reminder for caring for outdoor space. Definitely creating interest and looking at ways to divide the space based on how you actually use the space. I've been in my home just over ten years, and the space has been an evolution of a long term vision. It started with planting in the front yard to frame the home, then enclosing the back yard for privacy so it feels like the space is an extension of the 🏡. I then added a deck and plants for interest, and followed it with a fire pit and patio off of the deck. Plants around the deck give it privacy so it is almost like a separate room from the patio and surrounding space, so it's like having two outdoor rooms. I also like to grow vegetables and fruit, so I have planned garden space for that, as well as using trees for natural shade in another area. As I said, this has been an evolution. I agree and know I could do better with more intentional, quality furniture. That's great advice. I'll check out more of the marketplace and estate sales, too! Thank you!

Oh Valentina! This has given me so many ideas and joy. We bought a little fixer upper deep in the Galician countryside last year and believe me, it required a lot of vision and still a lot of work. But now the spring is upon us, I really want to get to work on the garden. As you will remember from living in Europe, country houses have lots of decorative stone pieces. We have been fortunate to uncover lots of hidden gems whilst clearing away the rubble (even a vintage farm cart - beautiful). Now I am even more inspired. Thank you..as always!

Excellent advice. I liked my outdoor space but felt it was lacking something. I have a fairly large wooden table outside under a pergola because I entertain there frequently. It was ok but nothing special. Then I remembered my sad broken wedgewood dark blue florentine bone china. I had 12 dinner plates boxed up in the garage while I was doing a remodel. My mother Inadvertently placed something heavy on the box and all 12 broke. A light bulb went off in my head and I hired a mosaic artist to cover the top and sides of the table with the pieces of the broken plates. She did an amazing job and it is gorgeous and unique. A work of art. Now my outdoor space is a show stopper.
Looking forward to your video on your outdoor space. I know it will be beautiful.

Love this, I find there's not always as much out there interior design wise for outdoor spaces so while I'm feeling pretty confident in my indoor space, my outdoor space could use a bit of updating. I bought a loft apartment in a renovated building that they changed from a beautiful white Spanish stucco to some grey concrete boards as the walls. My goal this year is to warm the space up and make it feel more alive. I bought an amazing set the year I moved in that looks like real rattan but theres still something missing. It's always fun figuring it out - I'm thinking some aged terracotta. I'm lucky enough to have two balconies and a roof top deck so I get to have way too much fun with that.

I agree with you on so many levels. The two ideas I found most helpful were #1 Time. Give yourself the grace of time before buying. It's worth waiting for. #2 Have a focal point. Keep space interesting with cohesive variety. I made the mistake of buying all black wrought iron gliders, table, chairs, etc. (cohesive but boring) I discovered colorful plants, planters, and cushions to be my new best friends. My favorite though, is the fountain. The birds are grateful for that. 😊 ( I'm excited about your first million followers. Keep up the excellent work)

Loved this, especially living in the Sunshine State of Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 we live most of our time outdoors, even now @5am in the morning, I’m sitting outside drinking my morning coffee watching your video, that’s just what we do here, back in 2020 we renovated the inside of our home and it was only last year that we finally got to doing our outdoor area the way I wanted it, bringing the indoors to the outdoors, we have two separate areas, one with a couch style furniture and the other with a table and chairs, the only thing I need to switch up is the chairs to the table eventually when I find the ones I want, we spend a lot of time in this area of our home and I love ❤️ it. It’s all screened in so I also have the privacy and even if it rains I can still sit out there, I call it My Happy Place because I can look out into our garden and we also have an alfresco area with a garden sail with a iron and marble table and chairs, it does get wet if it rains but it’s lovely to look out there plus there’s plenty of seating if needed. I’d love to see more outdoor projects your doing to your home, I’m not one to switch up my indoors as much as I often switch up my outdoors with different plants and pots. Great video as always V. If you can help with any of this, that would be great. Actually, anything you say is always so inspirational!

What great timing! Spring has definitely sprung. Just like putting in and caring for a garden, patio / deck decorating can very much be a journey that changes with the seasons. Would love to see how your outdoor space changes over time. Congrats on the new patio set! It looks great. I'm not quite to the patio furniture phase yet - but am looking for ideas.
Would also love to see how you visualize landscaping and what it will look like when it's all put together and mature along with various planters / furniture / hardscape pieces. Spent the day stacking firewood, cleaning up the backyard, and using wood as markers of where future features will be so that I can see where those markers are when I look out of windows from the inside. The outdoors needs to look good from the inside, too. ...somehow!

    • @chelzeyrae
      @chelzeyrae Před 2 lety

Putting in the markers is a good way to start! My husband and I just finished up redoing our backyard all by ourselves-- we put in a couple trees, built some cobblestone raised garden beds, and put in a lawn! It was a lot of hard work but so rewarding being back there and getting to enjoy the final product.
My advice would be to take your time with deciding on the layout of plants, furniture etc. For me personally, the sun is the biggest factor you'll want to take into consideration. Lounge chairs would want to be in the sun, whereas a table or other outside seating might want to be in the shade. In my yard the sun changes throughout the year and gets blazing hot in the summer! So we had to build shade structures as well. But it all goes back to your *vision* of how you want to use the space! And working with the conditions you're given.
I'm not an expert gardener but I consider myself fairly experienced, and let me tell you... The plants have been a work in progress. It takes time to get to know what type of plants do well with the different lighting/ soil/ water conditions. Luckily we've only lost two small plants, but others have completely popped off with growth and we're now having to relocate them because they're outgrowing the space! Do your best to research the water and lighting needs, but just expect some flops. A good place to start would be go around your neighborhood and see what type of plants are thriving (paying attention to the direction they're facing in relation to the Sun). Wish I would have done that from the beginning!
Good luck on your patio journey! You're going to love it once it's all done!

@@chelzeyrae Thanks for the details! Yes, sun is the most important. Proposed use. Aspect. Sun completely changed overnight when the maple that stood in the middle of the yard was taken down due to being split down the middle. It was in danger of falling over. (Hence the stacking of wood.) Taking it down brought in the sun and created a blank canvas. It's going to take living with it for a while to observe where the sun and shadows fall throughout the day.
Thanks for the plant advice. I've also looked at the Arbor Day Foundation's site. One can search by zip code to see which trees are indigenous. No sense in fighting Mother Nature. For smaller plants, online nurseries will also list zones, which is helpful. Also, just because it can grow in my area doesn't mean it goes in the yard. Mint, for example, is a bully and will take over - so that's a confined planter herb. :)
Patio and furniture is still further off.

Living in a 655 square feet rental apt in San Diego and I love watching Valentina and Jack and getting ideas even though I can't renovate or change anything. They have such elegant esthetic without being stuffy. Love you guys and your family. Sending you many blessings for making our spaces beautiful.

Living in Upstate NY, it wouldn't be prudent to plant anything until after Mother's Day. That being said, the winter porch decor must go, and a Spring Re-fresh is needed. I always swap out my chair cushions and accent table cover. I arrange my planters, some I leave empty, some I pop in a faux plant. My cottage style insists on bringing in thrifted baskets for texture. Placing a few lime washed pots around, even if empty, gets me amped for the new season. Gardening tools also play into my aesthetic. old tool box, aged watering can....ready!

Hello, I absolutely love your videos and appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I live in Los Angeles and am fortunate to live near both Target, Ikea, and most of the stores you've mentioned. I also frequent a pottery manufacturer that sells to the public. I purchased several pieces from the Teak Warehouse over time that I place on the deck in warmer weather and source cushions from Home Goods to change looks. My kitchen table & chairs are an outdoor set, their black wrought iron and the table has a glass top.

I’m planning to add greenery this year. I’ve bought the pots, but now I need to decide what to plant in them. Because I live in Central Arizona, I have to choose plants that do well in the extreme dry heat, but I hate cactus. It’s going to be an adventure.

I think you have lots to share and would love to hear advice about cleaning and maintenance 😱 in general. Like how do you keep your home so clean?! 😩 Outside, do you wash those cushion covers often? Maybe my paralysis is lockdown induced but I have so many ideas for my SoCal condo but before I can do anything meaningful, I need to apply more maintenance. I would love to hear how you tackle molehills before they become mountains. (Ok, reality: I have great pieces, but dang they get dusty so I just cupboard them!) 😳🌹💃🤷‍♀️

Very nice choices. I like mixing the vintage pottery with the newer pieces. I think it creates interest in the setting. But still I want to see how you address the fifth wall in the yard. Lighting? elements protection? Can you sit outside in a light rain? Also thicker cushions take longer to dry. I like knife edge Sunbrella cushions. Not thick dries fast. Looking forward to the next posting for outdoor decor🥰🤗
