- A feature length documentary on Armenian born Soviet composer Aram Khachaturian. Awarded as the best documentary at the Hollywood Film Festival, the film is about the life of the composer creating in the darkness of a tragic era. A life full of contradiction: Was Aram Khachaturian playing the fool for Stalinism, or composing music that cried out against its evils? Was he a Soviet favorite musical son, or a sacrificial lamb? A loyal subject of the Kremlin, or secret dissident? An Armenian composer, rooted to his heritage, or the New Socialist Man? As we will see, like most Soviet citizens, Khachaturian hid a complex private life behind a mask of Communist loyalty.

My violin teacher was Georgian, he happened to meet Aram, I am deeply moved, somehow i happened to know throug my dear teacher the feeling of their people, their musicians, and that era. May them both rest in peace, thank you.
I’m from Peru and I’m crying now. Beautiful and sweet melodies ❤️
This was so special to me. I bought the DVD of Spartacus with Vasiliev even before I had a DVD machine! What a tremendous ballet: music, choreography, dancers. Lovely to find the coincidence that Khachaturian started writing it on the date of my birthday, 9 July. Wonderful to hear all those musicians and others telling of his life. I learnt so much. Thank goodness he prevailed after the denunciation. Thank you so much!
I am literally in tears. Such a great soviet composer with an Indian look which I was very much surprised. Another interesting thing is that he played cello in the Early stages Because I am also a cellist. Great presentation video of a great composer. Aram Khachaturian will live forever through his music in all continents.
@Ina Saro Hi friend i never claimed that he is indian.I know very well that Armenians are very different from others.Great Armenian composer.
He has quite an Armenian appearance, especially in his younger years

Khachaturian capto como ningun otro el alma del folklore de la tevgion csucasica en especial Armenia y Georgia.Su musica respira dinamismo frescura y verdadera belleza
Never heard his Spartacus but the melody that sounds at the end of this documentary, before the Saber Dance, it was always with me....quite amazing.....
Wonderful !!!

An extraordinary documentary which shows the titanic struggle of a composer to create in middle of the absurdity of a sinister totalitarian regime.

When I hear the name Soviet Union I feel a bad sensation...but obviously there were great artists , why not...
AK has a distinct Armenian sound. My first thought has never been 'Russian" or "Soviet" listening to him.

05:08 what's the name of the music?

I think everyone has different stories about their successes in music. Some met that great teacher, educator that made virtuosos out of them. Ivan Galamian is another great example of it. Some are naturally talented for whatever reasons. Genetics matters there. I look at things like a doctor, like our brain is highly plastic. In any case, there are children that have natural talent for music. Instrument matters! Talent is basically taking it to next level at a younger age. So not only you understand it, but you also comment on it. We can call it an orchestra director role. Basically, no matter what instrument you play, you are the director of your instrument and the piece. Perhaps changing diet helps, like eating more meat products while studying.
Nina Makarova, the wife of AK, was a stunning beauty.
And all this first person naration comes out of his own journal/letters? Or is just fiction to make it sound more compeling?????????? I would really like to know
out of his letters, of his own journal and his according to his son. In 1943, Stalin released Khaturyan and appointed Khrennikov to his position. These all are the facts of history.
I didn't know Khachaturian was the Godfather
My bad, the Nogodfather...
