Took some apart to fix them recently and was blown away by the cfl tubes behind the screen. No wonder these badboys drained AA's like they were going out of style
Same with the Nomad. I took mine apart when I was a kid trying to put the screen in my GameBoy Advanced xD (I was like 7 at least I had an idea) I even tried to wire all the came cartridge pins individually. The fact that the corrupted Nintendo logo kept changing made me think I’d actually get Genesis games running on my GBA. Good days when I was more hopeful instead of now where I feel hopeless. I miss those good old days
Yeah I saw a video where someone replaced them with a normal LED light behind the screen, the battery life jumped from 2-4 hours on a good day to 10-15 hours regularly.
i was born in the mid 90s so by the time i started gaming the game gear was just discontinued .but when i found out it existed in the 2000s i was quite impressed that it had better graphics than my game boy color and the screen was better than the gba. i thought it must have been released at the same time as the game boy color but it was way older .
The Game Gear ate through batteries real quick. You either needed to be rich in the battery department, or tether yourself with the wall adapter. I had the rechargeable battery packs.
Ya, good one showing him a bit of Sega's console history. I had a GG as a kid, but wasn't allowed to keep it for too long because of the battery related costs. Got one as an adult though, replaced screen and USB=C recharging port+battery mod, so it displays great and lasts 15 to 20 hours per charge. I didn't mod it though, had to pay someone to do it for me.
"hey kid, wanna play some retro video games? let me just take you to this dark parking lot that appears to be growing ever less populated by the minute"
I went to school with the kid whose father owned the video game rental store in my town, he brought a Game Gear to school and watched Ninja Turtles at lunch time on it. You could watch TV over air on it.
This was my first real handheld. The screen was actually awesome in the day to me. If I had a handheld with a screen like that now I would be calling for a lawsuit. 😂
I miss my GameGear. I spent most of my days off sitting in a recliner that was near a plug playing games. I even had the magnifying lense attachment that made the screen look bigger. Sadly, I traded all of my GameGear stuff in to get the Playstation.
spray the switch with plastic safe contact cleaner, and turn it on and off a few times to move the cleaner around in the switch my nephews GBA have a touchy switch, but the contact cleaner fixed it, its no long intermittant, it works every time now
Really cool, I never had a game gear before but I had played one at a friends house though had streets of rage which was fun. Really wish I was able to buy one when they where cheap enough.
It's a great port on the system, I was playing it today on my GG. The Super Wide Gear magnifier is pretty useful, but it makes the GG look like a camera.
@@MyLAWLAWL A 16-bit handheld Genesis. It didn‘t have a reset switch, so you couldn‘t complete X-Men, because a puzzle on the penultimate level required you to reset the game… that‘s borderline traumatic to an early ‘90s kid😂 If you can find one, it’ll likely need work to get it back to good condition. The capacitors and screen Sega used were absolute garbage.
@@Enraged-Gecko I still have nightmares about the X-Men game. I rage quit as a kid so many times, turning the console off. It wasn't until another rage that I hit the reset switch instead of turning it off and the game continued. It's X-Men that made me immediately check the case of Metal Gear Solid when told the radio frequency was on the case, I wasn't getting fooled by a game like that again.

I did get a little giggle out of that but considering he's never seen one in his life and they aren't exactly common (esp working ones today) he's not that far off. He also wasn't born here he lived most of his life in a small island country. Probably no one there had one or at least almost no one but again by the time he was old enough to game these were already obsolete. But yeah it was still funny 🤣

did no one have the battery pack or the car adapter at the time I did the battery pack would give me 2 days of play time and I had 2 of them and an ac adapter for at home

I was sweating bullets seeing that car

Always fun showing the younger generation….did this have to be done in the dark in a car?? Haha😅
Yes😂
nothing creepy at all.

Thanks for the description because I was gonna ask if you were picking-up randos off the street to get into your car in order to play video games.

I remember playing GG for the first time, 2 hours later batteries dead and burning hot when I took them out.
i'm shocked you were able to play it for 2 hours straight

ohh yeah i forgot about the antenna. I never had one myself.
Bro my mom regretted getting this for me! every AA battery was gone from remotes and everything i could find hahahaha

Still have memories of my dad buying me one at a flea market in 2001. Served me for a few years before it stopped working.

So funny that he’s never even heard of it! That battery life is the main issue, everyone I knew played it at home plugged in. So, not very portable
Cool video. It has a TV tuner for it too. I think we bought it 3 times over when I was a kid.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention the TV tuner!
The battery thing was the main issue i remember about the GG
I used rechargeable AAs
spray the switch with plastic safe contact cleaner, and turn it on and off a few times to move the cleaner around in the switch

the authentic experience as I said! gotta start there!
