British Airways Terminal 5 London Driver-less Pods
Pods at Heathrow airport are driver-less pods that transport you from the thistle hotel and parking area directly to terminal 5.
The Pods began operating at London Heathrow in 2011.
Unlike all UK road and rail traffic, which drives on the left, the PRT system drives on the right.
Taking the pods at heathrow is one of my favorite ways to reach heath-row for an early morning flight. Alternatively you can take the free bus back to the airport.
The pods time is around 5 minutes and costs around five pounds for the journey, so if you think about it, that's a pound a minute which does sound expensive.

I didn't realise they had these at Healthrow. Very futuristic! Yes I would definitely use one.
As a wheelchair user i encounter some trouble with public transport, wouldnt go near a bus, taxis are ok, and i like the local tram system as long as the trams arent packed, it can feel a bit claustrophobic sitting there with others stood around me. This would be the perfect solution, private, automated, A to B without stopping, futuristic, what more could you want !! lol. I would have one of these as my own personal transport if i could.
I think these would be a great replacement for buses and traffic. If you could get bigger versions of these into cities that would be amazing.
czcams.com/video/TiMyvtIcw74/video.html if you watch this documentary they even talk about it. The pods can actually transport more people per hour than a bus or tram. These are the future.
@@devon896 i hope so :), i'll save that and give it a watch later :)
@@markorollo. It's a really good documentary, goes back to the first airport at Heathrow and how airports expanded.
What happens if you try calling a pod but no pods are available?
I've been to Heathrow multiple times and I didn't even know these existed! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the comment and watching. They have slightly limited use, but there have been talks to have them around the airport connecting terminals, well in the future at least.
The future is here. In London. People I know in NYC think the airtrain is amazing...
lol so true.
I had four hours between flights and I rode them back and forth for like two hours. Its really fun...........(I'm an American so I get worked up over things like this....LOL)
Your not the first to comment doing that lol, people do seem to love them. More fun than sitting the airport I guess.
if too many people are doing that it means pods won't be available for genuine travellers
WD Harris -
i am sooo doing this lol
we not even flying ... we just are going to spend a few days at heathrow but i so wanna go on this
I'd heard about the PODs, but this is the first time I've seen them. Very cool!
It's so modern it looks futuristic they look fun can't wait for this to be implemented on other airports
I think its great, saves on traffic also.
I think those are FRICKING AWESOME!!!
this is so fun, thank you for sharing
When I flew back from Canada I had several hours to kill at T5 waiting for my connecting BA shuttle, these were a good way to kill the time lol
Excellent :)
omg sounds like a good idea ha ha
Great video thanks for sharing. We are using the pod tomorrow’s 😊
What a brilliant bit of tech. Love your stuff. Truly amazed you have less than 14k subscribers. Having travelled a fair bit and now not so much its a pleasure watching your contributions. Please keep it up.
Thank you for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for the comment. I will keep making the videos if people keep watching them.
I did not know that there was this way of getting into Terminal 5.Amazing stuff.
Its a great way to arrive.
Thank you. I will be staying at the Thisle later in the year and look forward to a ride in a pod.
Love love love this report! Those pods look like they're from the Jetsons. Hope to also try them out one of these days. Thanks for sharing!
Just like the Jetson's, but if only they flew !!!!
WOW!!! Very good this pods, for spotting that's just perfect ;)
They are indeed great.
OMG!!!!!!, these are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guess I'm taking British Airways from now on. Amazing video btw. I Was on holiday so I've got some catching up to do now lol
Thanks for watching and the comment.
yes i do take a pod. Its the best way to travel from parking to T5. I may wish that in the future they would do install these pods to other terminals also.
They hope to expand to other terminals of heathrow 1 day.
Yeah I agree to you and how was your trip in Heathrow airport??
good video dude
Hello, Pods seem very practical but I never knew they existed? I have never seen them at Heathrow airport? Interesting!!! Worth a try!!!
Staying at the Thistle hotel later this year before a flight to Texas - really looking forward to using the Pods!
You bet I would. It looks like fun.
Think I saw a button you press in case the doors dont open, but first I thought you would say something like Open the Pod bay doors Hal.....LOL
The pod seems more exclusive. I am yet to try it out but will do so in the near future. You also get an airside tour which is also a plus. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching and the comment. Yes its a fun way to arrive. I'm taking them again this weekend.
Omg this is so cool! so futuristic!
I know they have plans to expand them all around LHR.
This is awesome, cant wait to use it in 3 days!!
Have fun with it.
this was a great idea,we went in one and loved it,
I wish it was all around the airport to be honest.
amazing! Thank you
Thanks for the comment.
cool view from the pods
Thanks
They are super cool! I do not particularly believe that they will replace cars completely, but they are ideal for business centers and airports (connecting terminals and etc). The design is exquisite and elegant, the controls are super easy and the smart solutions might help in the future as well.
I'd luv to take it ,it's awesome 😊
YES!
One of the highlights of Heathrow airport. Used to do it all the time, despite not parking a car there or staying at the Thistle!
Yes they are great. I guess if you can reach the pod station without parking or staying at the hotel it would be free.
I just use the pods when I get to Heathrow because I have time to kill before my flight. Five minutes to the car park, five minutes back. It amazes me that I very rarely see anyone else waiting for a pod!
I did try and work out if there was another way in - I walked from the terminal all the way to the Premier Inn opposite the Thistle, and also inside the whole of the car park - but it's inaccessible from that side unless you buy a ticket at the Thistle. You can't walk into the car park because the road isn't pedestrianised... and it's a very busy road! I stayed at the Thistle last year and tried to see if there was a way of getting in free but of course they've got that electronic gate.
I always did wonder, I guess you can walk down that grass patch to the car park and walk in that way, but like you said, no side walk to go on. I think I would just pay the charge and use the gate if I stayed again.
Yes!!
It's every handy and a fun way to go to T5, but it's indeed quite expensive!
NeverSeenNoPlanes - Aviation and More free
I heard it was a free service. I wonder if Logan Airport has anything like it. I doubt it.
Its free
wowowow!
Cool Pods!
Indeed.
yes i would take a tide pod :)
Very clever invention.
Thank you for watching the comment.
Wish we had these at LAX!
Hi great vid can you do an emirates a380 vid:)D
Coming soon
I arrived in terminal 1 at Heathrow in the evening from America. I went looking for the Pods. My mistake was that the pods are at terminal 5. An information expert at the airport helped me realize my mistake. Once I go to terminal 5, I found the Pod and made my way to the hotel very easily. The next day, I took the Pod back to terminal 5. Once found, it was very easy to use...just like the video showed.
I would take one to the tube station. That 25mph could easily be increased to 35/40mph. The journey to the station would be a welcomed trip.
They are going to expand them around Heathrow, which will be great.
I always wondered what they were like, seeing them circle around the runway either from the road or when landing. Thanks for the video!
I would take them all the time if their route was only convenient to me! Could they be the future of public transportation, and in the meantime, could they be extended between the terminals, as the current travel time and conditions between Heathrow's terminals are not ideal.
I know that one day heathrow plans to have these all around the airport, which would be wonderful.
Using them on Thursday and Saturday on my way with BA to the South of France
Greatest way to T5. I mean the bus is free, but this is a lot more fun.

These pods really look like fun, thanks for sharing! I wonder how many people actually use these though?
Thanks again
Brendan Berkhout
They are mainly for parking, so not a lot of use, but one day LHR hopes to have them around the entire airport.
Even though I only use LHR once or twice a year that would be pretty cool!
Your pod will be here soon.
Very nice system,I hope it will expand to other parts of the world
Its a fantastic system.
I love these and think they would be a good system for on-demand transit for people with disabilities. It looks like there is enough space for at least one wheelchair, who could use the system through voice prompts, and if the announcement was made in the proper way (e.g. "close the doors by pressing the top-most button on the panel to your left. The button is marked with a braille letter C and is flashing Amber" it could be independently used by someone who is blind.
Great Idea you have, it would be nice to have more of these.
When I Travel The World Agreed. I keep wondering if my transit agency would buy these to supplement the local ParaTransit service.
I hope these pods will one day go from the car parks to other terminals too like Terminal 2 where I went to Canada
Yeah they have talked about expanding them around the airport.
We so need those at Manchester Airport!
It would be handy.
Blue skies over London Heathrow? ! This must be AI ! haha
I could play on them all day!
Yeah its fun.
this looks very interesting! I would take a pod and pay £5...
I think they are free from the airport to the parking area.
Gonna be my first time at Heathrow specially alone so I might feel safer going on the pods 🤔
I’ve seen several of these videos, and all these years I thought that the loud clack was the release of the charging plate, but apparently it’s the mechanical brakes?
Open the Pod bay doors please..
I'm sorry, I can't do that right now.
Sort of reminds me of that moment in total recall !!! Your in a Johnny Cab !
yes i would tke a pod
i want one to adopt
Yes
How is this a detailed review you could just title it. Fun pod ride bois
Guess your right. I adjusted it.
When I Travel The World I do think your videos are awesome I've flown Ba business before. Keep it up.
yes i would
Wonder what happens if your at station B and you click to go station A, should've tried it
They really should have these for public transport, I'm a wheelchair user and don't like when the trams that we have in my area get crowded, they are great otherwise but i don't like that aspect of them, and don't get me started on how much I hate so called accessible buses!! Lol. I've used those once, never again. These would be perfect for me, private, A to B, no stopping, and they look good too. bliss lol
I agree with you, not only would these be great for a wheelchair, they would also be a lot better for the environment.
Also lets take it a step further and replace cars with these for example, I think there would be a lot less accidents and deaths as they are controlled and would stop reckless drivers.
I can't wait until they have these all around heathrow in a few years.
@@Whenitraveltheworld ive just noticed i already replied to this about six months ago, saying more or less the same thing, thats just how much i like them lol
Nope! Airlines ought to be footing that bill to get you into the terminal, especially if you pay for parking. Looks fun for 1 or 2 trips, though!
I think the PODS are free if you park your car, just when going from the hotel they have a side entrance to the parking area and that is where you pay the 5 pounds to enter the gate into the car park.
It looks great ... Only £ 5 for each pod one way than £ 10 ... Good to travel with many people in a private pod . But I think it can handle 6 person maximum, not more than that.If it is me,I will chose the pod . 5 Minutes only,I wonder taking a bus will takes me 15 minutes
I mean its a fun little ride. And you can ride it from the airport to the parking lot for free and back if you want.
I really want to go on this haha do you have to park there to use it? So we can’t be dropped
Off outside and get on the pod?
reahuggins not at all, it’s free for anyone to use.
Thank you
Yes i would take a pod.
They are planning to expand them all around heathrow one day.
Hi. I know I'm late in the day to this video but if i booked in at the Thistle hotel for plane spotting purposes i presume i could ride the pod to T5 for the whole airport experience? Would i have to pay? Thank you.
You can book plane spotting rooms at the thistle, though they do have an open air bar terrace which is amazing for spotting if the planes are landing on that runway. If you stay at the thistle you need to pay 5 pounds each way to use it still. There are ways to get it for free, but I can't post those.
This reminds me of the monorail at Birmingham international... just not as posh as this one! Lol
Yeah its about the same.
I wonder why they travel on the right side and not the left.
Might have been designed and built on a country that drives on that side.
@@Whenitraveltheworld they were designed and made in the uk
Would like to go on this
They are great.
can't believe ive never heard of the pods before totally missed their development, how long have they been at t5, mustve taken some time in development and construction - totally missed it - t5 is like a mini airport all to itself - only discovered it this year when visiting departures via free heathrow xpress link from t3
I'm guessing, but I think they were built for T5, so they must have started in 2008 or around that time.

Westfield Technology Group are demonstrating a driverless pod to HM Government outside Parliament next Wednesday 20th June 2018
You are going to Terminal 5.
Is that OK?
This looks amazing... Are they free??? We carnt even get a train to my main airport only accessible buy a shit congested freeway..
I believe if you park they are free. The hotel charges a 5 access fee to reach the pods, but once in there is no charge or payment needed at the pod station.
Hello.
Where do you want to go?
Everytime I need to go to the Terminal, I use the pods
Same here
I’d still encourage walking so the owners of the airport can consider to create more and maximise the people using them or instead bring it into the city of london
Don't you think it's the other way around? If people don't use them, they won't build more..
I have taken the pod.
Hope you enjoyed it.
Lucky enough
when i took a pod i got told off for not being a "paying customer"
If I were going to and from an airport to parking, then yes, I sure would ride on a pod. Who wants to walk that far with luggage?
I would if they were in Chicago
Maybe one day.

Tinha que ser da ABB
A billon seconds ago it was 1959
lol very true.
do these only serve T5?
Sadly yes at the moment. They had plans to put them to all terminals, but those plans are on holding pending the heathrow expansion plans.
When were these pods created or placed at London Heathrow
They started in 2011.
When I Travel The World wow they look so modern
The future is here.
I wish I could take these everywhere.
(Terminal 5 | Station A).

Great...its not exspensive compared to Australia we pay on average $30 and upwards for a bus seat to the Airport and triple for a taxi....looks like fun
Wow $30 for a bus, is that a local bus to the airport ? That's just a pure rip off.
how much luggage can you get in them?
Probably 2 people, 2 large suitcases upright and 2 carry on's
Five pounds per person or per pod?
Per Pod. So great if you have people to go with.
wonder what their reliability and economics are like - breakdowns, tech failures, storm damage, vandalism, maintenance, design and build costs, repairs, staffing - whos the manufacturer and whos the sponsor?
I could not tell you for sure, though you might enjoy this article.

I would take a pod
They are fun.
logan mearns Same here, just for fun
I thought they were free and from the car parks.
When you pay for parking they are including in your parking. If you stay at the hotel there is a gate which they charge 5 pounds for the code. But you can walk out of the hotel around the road , into the car park and jump on the pod for free.
I wouid Take a pod
If i had the oportunity to
Yeah they are fun.
