Only things missing were Apple Maps telling you to make a U-turn on the freeway. Or to get back on the freeway when you’re right next to your destination. Or telling you you’re at your destination while you’re passing it by on the freeway.

Yes, kids, it's true. We really did print out maps and travel like pirates. And that was an upgrade from the days of buying a giant map at a book store that had been printed before that last wave of infrastructure construction and could never be refolded back into its most compact form. Ahh, the good ol' days when road trips were so much more complicated and frustrating.

Don’t forget the custom AAA TripTik maps - my parents drove us across the US using those, with the highways sections under construction denoted by a AAA employee using a highlighter marker. Good times and good for at least one fight per trip only narrowly avoiding ending your parents marriage over whether or not the family was lost and if you should have stopped to ask directions (mom- yes, dad - no & you have no idea how to read a map).

Google maps gets steadily better over the years, especially in rural settings, but I remember one trip on a winding mountain road where for some reason the google woman kept telling telling me to turn left onto non-existent roads. Made worse because there was a steep cliff on the left. Another time it landed me at the back fence of someone's property and insisted I was at my destination, and it wouldn't start over to get me around on the dirt roads to get to the front of the property. Climbing over people's fences and coming up from behind isn't safe in the country.

Well, as long as you look at the map beforehand, plan out your route and have someone in the passengers seat to be constantly keeping track of where you’re going. With the downside to that being if you get lost you pull into a parking lot and figure it out for 15 minutes. That always happened at least once when we went on our family vacations back in the late 2000s when I was like 5.

@JosephineLittel After you'd done it a few times, it became second nature. I used to write out the most important things to remember in huge letters on a sheet of paper and lay it in the passenger seat to glance down at if necessary.
Don't get me wrong, GPS apps are sooo much better like 98% of the time, you just have to be aware that they will occasionally steer you wrong.

My favorite Apple Maps experience was when I asked it to take me to the airport, and I wasn’t specific enough. Instead of taking me to Departures or the parking lot, it took me to the other end of the airfield, with the runways and a tall barbed wire fence between me and the terminal. Good thing I always plan to get to the airport early. My 15-minute delay didn’t help my travel anxiety, but I got to the gate in plenty of time. I now use Google to get to the airport and have the Departures area saved in my favorites.

It all started for me with Mapquest about 20 years ago. It was actually very helpful but you did have to plan ahead. Not all MBTI personalities are good with that. Then I was using Garmin, quite good but without any traffic warnings. These days it is WAZE for me and the part about taking the elite detours is 100% true. Have done so many times, some to my chagrin. It loves residential streets. This is one of your very best videos Frank!

Apple Maps is the least frustrating because you just have invest the time to learn how to use it. You learn to put the trip and destination in your calendar app the night before so everything comes up automatically when you get in the car and you scope out the parking situation in Street View before you leave. You learn to put in pit stops so your drive time estimate doesn't get messed up and to set the arrival time as something that accommodates for traffic and pit stops. You learn how to toggle the voice on and off so it only talks during the parts of the trip you need help. And you learn to slow down when a turn's coming up in case it doesn't speak up til you're in the middle of the intersection and should've already made the turn.

The best one is where Google tells you a route will be slower, but you disbelieve it and try it anyway, and then once you disobey it, THEN it tells you that it's actually much quicker. Sometimes i think it basically lies to you to stop you going down backstreets and annoying residents. Its understandable but it just goes to show, you cant really trust it to take you the quickest way all the time.
