Making a Yew Flatbow
Vložit
- čas přidán 30. 11. 2020
- This European Yew log was not the best quality bowmaking material but I managed to make an use of it. It had many checks going through sapwood and sometimes even heartwood. It was seasoned for 3 years when I got it. It was my first attempt at "serious" yew bow.
And I have fallen in love with this wood and the bow!

If I may... I don't know where You live and make those beautifull bows....
If You can, please buy a puncher for the holes on the leather...
The punched holes won't tear or broke so easy...
And soak the leather into water, and than stitch it, it would take the shape better and more stiffer...
Thanks for advice sir!!!
Great work it can be tricky to tiller a lumpy bow like that I'm working on a osage longbow now 6ft 3in shooting for around 100# would like to see how it shoots compared to same pound yew warbow lol
Thank you sir! Wow interesting project, good luck!
When you take sap wood off are you worried about violating growth rings? Or is it much of a concern? I use yew and have never attempted to remove any sap wood because it might cause flaws when drawing, thanks, love your vids
A question... How long have to dry eg: an oak wood before You start to shape it?
What the heck is bog oak. Nice contrast. Beautiful
Bog Oak is oak wood buried in bogs for hundred years. It gets black. Thank you!
“Oak” is a very general term. There’s hundreds of sub species of oak
Awesome work! Did you season/dry the stave after splitting and removing bark?
Thank you! A bit yes, but it was seasoned mainly before as a log
Hermoso lazo..madera de tejo?
Thank you! Yes it is
violating growthrings doesnt hurt yew? or just lowpoundage bows can handle it?
If the poundage is lower it's not a problem. Making this bow I managed to keep one growt ring except handle but it's okey and the bow is doing great
Hey, buddy, I want to ask you when you work on the bow handle, is it in the middle of the bow or a little bit of a lever?
Usually I make them in the middle or upper limb a bit longer
Hey does this how require off knuckle shooting or does the arrow rest somewhere?
Off knuckle
Do these ever go up for sale ?.
Yes here: dreamcraftbows.com/en_GB/new
Did not know yew dust was toxic, thanks.
You're welcome! Stay safe!
Hi, what kind of oil is this??
It is linseed oil
3:40 would it snap faster if you don't get it used to bends first?
Anyways, epic video
yes, thank you
Γειά σου μία ερώτηση,τι ξύλο είναι? Ευχαριστώ.
It's a yew wood (taxus baccata)
Did you follow a growthring?
It was my intention and mostly there is single growth ring on the back except of handle section.
@@DreamcraftBows cool, never made a bow from yew but i heard its not an issue with yew as with wood like maple and ash
@Jill Athertoninteresting! hazel crysalized when I attempt to make bows from it, but thats the inadequate bowyer in me talking ;)
no need to. just leave about 1/4 inch of sapwood on the back, and you'll be fine. Make sure you leave a bit more for protection around problem areas and leave whatever is under the bark undisturbed where there's a knot.
🐭😁
Is yew pineP?
No
