Making a Yew Flatbow

  • This European Yew log was not the best quality bowmaking material but I managed to make an use of it. It had many checks going through sapwood and sometimes even heartwood. It was seasoned for 3 years when I got it. It was my first attempt at "serious" yew bow.
    And I have fallen in love with this wood and the bow!

    If I may... I don't know where You live and make those beautifull bows....
    If You can, please buy a puncher for the holes on the leather...
    The punched holes won't tear or broke so easy...
    And soak the leather into water, and than stitch it, it would take the shape better and more stiffer...

    Great work it can be tricky to tiller a lumpy bow like that I'm working on a osage longbow now 6ft 3in shooting for around 100# would like to see how it shoots compared to same pound yew warbow lol

    When you take sap wood off are you worried about violating growth rings? Or is it much of a concern? I use yew and have never attempted to remove any sap wood because it might cause flaws when drawing, thanks, love your vids

  • @juhosciposzalonjuhosshoe5394

    A question... How long have to dry eg: an oak wood before You start to shape it?

    violating growthrings doesnt hurt yew? or just lowpoundage bows can handle it?

    • @DreamcraftBows
      @DreamcraftBows  Před 3 lety

      If the poundage is lower it's not a problem. Making this bow I managed to keep one growt ring except handle but it's okey and the bow is doing great

      no need to. just leave about 1/4 inch of sapwood on the back, and you'll be fine. Make sure you leave a bit more for protection around problem areas and leave whatever is under the bark undisturbed where there's a knot.
