  • Sharing my experience and footage from building yew bows. This wood is often being called the best out of bow woods. For sure it's one of the top bow making materials out there.

Yew was only used by Britain because its crap and the English were too poor to get the higher quality wood like Oak.
Also Maple wood is better, but by the time Europeans discovered Maple wood, they already had guns.

Yew is native to Britain by the way and is no where near extinct. Some people may have imported some trees to Poland but i assume they quickly decided to stop growing them when they realized its actually inferior wood to what they already had. If it had been as great as the English claim, then it would be grown everywhere in Europe. But instead, its trees like Oak that you find everywhere. Because Oak is better. Tho Maple is better then Oak, too bad it got discovered after guns became a thing.

I'm fortunate to live in an area where Osage Orange, Hickory, Ornamental Yew, and Black Locust occur plentifully. I have used them for walking sticks and canes, and only recently become interested in Bow making, so the information is greatly appreciated. Yew wood bows are very attractive but I have lots of other wood staves dried, so it's going to be a while before I ever try it. (I might never, but it's good to have the information.) Cheers.

i was fortunate to have a dead standing yew in my apt. yard grounds it was topped about 8 ft up but branched off twice before that i made one bow my first started at 48 inches as thats what the smaller piece would allow but i snapped 4 inches off so kinda completed at 42 inches i was worried id break it again so i bamboo backed it and now its really hard to draw guess ill have to tiller more its doesnt have any hardwood bit my big piece does its about 8ft tall maybe six inch wide at base to about 1 1/2" at top ive debarked it and it so curly grained was going to turn it into a tall stand lamp lol cause it stands straight up on its own due to wide base but think itll be bow #2 maybe 3 as well

      Yew is incredibly toxic...
You should always wear a mask if you sand Yew...
Just 30 grams of needles in a bowl of water during a night make it mortaly toxic...

I'm wondering, how tall are you ?
I'm asking because you generaly say that you have a 26" draw length... But you seems to be really taller than someone that would have This dl (generaly 1m60 people have a 26" dl).
Also, you should not put you bow hand like that. You are too much on Your thumb, you will develop chronic pain.
And Your hand placement should give you longer draw length and a better control on Your bow.
Placing bow hand is in fact the harder thing to master in archery...
Every bow has its perfec hand placement. It's always a journey for me to discover how to handle a bow. Each bow has It's personnality.

      @DreamcraftBows  Před 2 lety

I'm like 180 cm tall. You're right, but I tend to shorten my draw - as you can see in the videos. I'm aware that I should draw further.
Thank you for the tip! Didn't know that.
Precious thoughts you share, thank you!

@@DreamcraftBows i'm 183cm tall and i have 31,5" draw, but It's long even for that heigh.
As long as you always make the same, it doesnt really matter after all... You just lost a little speed and you can shoot shorter Bows.
Im not the best archer, but i learned despite myself that hand placement matter a lot and It's never the same between each different bow...
I admire what you do, Your Bows are really beautiful !
