To think that a 20 & 17 year old came up with an evergreen song like "To Love Somebody" is truly remarkable. There are probably hundreds of covers from a wide range of artists. The live versions are even better - the ending on the 1989 version is like butter.

  • @kenhamaker
    @kenhamaker Před 3 lety +18

The issue is that people want to put them in a box and define the role and capability of each brother, the problem with that is all three have so many more dimensions to them that just blows any conception of that box away, they all could sing extremely well with a wide range of pitches, they are all proficient with one or more instruments, and all three very capable song writers, if someone was to take in all their work and understand all that each put into the group you would likely conclude there is no best, they all three are basically equally excellent and valuable to what we know as the Bee Gees, their independent work, and the work they contributed to other singers. Clearly they reached legendary status that is still not recognized in full even at this time, likely it will be long after all their deaths that their full appreciation will come.

    • @giannafrancis5176
      @giannafrancis5176 Před 3 lety +2

I agree with what you said. They all could pretty much do it all, all seemed adaptable and they all worked very hard to perform their best. I think they all probably had preferred roles/strengths and must have respected each other’s roles to a large extent for them to be able to function as well and as long as they did.
I’m not speculating on who (Robin or Maurice) is singing which part because I don’t even understand how that works. Despite trying to research the topic a little it still seems murky to me: is falsetto the same as a head voice or is it somehow different? must a note be either falsetto, head voice or chest voice? can it ever be a combination? how does a low falsetto note differ from a high chest voice? can a listener tell what voice a singer is using by just listening? or must one look carefully at the singer to see what muscles are being used? to what extent is this a recording/live performance? do the camera operators know who to focus on? are the editors inserting the correct camera shot? do they choose the shot based on who is singing a certain part? or who appears more interesting at that point in time? or who deserves some camera time?
I’ve heard Maurice in interviews say he did not sing falsetto. He sang high harmonies. Was he saying this based on the source of his voice? Did he possibly not want to impinge upon what he saw as Barry’s role? Maybe he just did not like the label of falsetto. Perhaps he considered falsetto to be more closely associated with the lead singer. It’s easy to observe from several performances that he was able to sing very high and very low pitches. During one concert performance, Barry and Robin both seemed to smile in approval while singing upon hearing the pitch and strength of Maurice’s high harmony part. In another concert performance, it seemed like he accidentally held a note too long at the end of a song and it was a very high pitched note.
I’ve thought Robin’s tone of voice is distinctive and unique and yet Mo said sometimes he had difficulties in telling which voice was Robin’s and which was Barry’s. Maybe Robin’s voice was inimitable only within certain ranges or when he was focused on using his vibrato. I’m not listening to this performance because I don’t have headphones and I want to avoid awakening my husband. I’m a nocturnal creature and he’s not.
I appreciate your thoughts and believe your last sentence, in particular, to be very true.

Ah the genius that was Maurice. He was a master harmonist. His vocal range D2-E5 was superb. Pre Barry Falsetto, Maurice did the higher registers. Maurice was the glue that held all things together. People may say he was under appreciated but what he did, kept the brothers rock solid. He could throw in a harmony at any point in a song. Not to mention he loved the production side so much. Barry refers to him as the “Gadgets Man”. That was Mo.

It's been covered by approximately 50 other artists over the years (Elvis, etc...) Robert Stigwood brought Barry in to meet Otis Redding and told him he wanted him to write a song for Otis, and this was it. However, Otis and his band died in a plane crash before they could get around to recording it, so the guys did it. It's like the song "Words", it was supposed to go to a big British singer, but they could never get in touch with him, so THEY recorded it. (Funny thing, that singer found this out yeeears later and told Barry that he'd been singing "Words" in his act and concerts for years! He was heartsick to find put it could have been "his" all along!)
This is my FAVORITE video of them doing this song BECAUSE of Mo's ad libs! They were great!! He wasn't doing it in falsetto, though - Maurice always did VERY high harmonies, especially in "Fannie".
THANKS, Chad, for another GREAT weekend! You're wonderful!! 💟

  • @lena-mariag.louis-charles3579

Sir Barry was ~21 and the twins Robin and Maurice were ~18 in this clip.
According to Robin, the brothers started out when the twins were 7, and big brother Barry was 10, in Manchester, UK.
Sir Barry had gotten a guitar for his 9th birthday - and the brothers would harmonize (and come up with lyrics...) while big brother taught himself to play the guitar.
Back then, they called themselves "The Rattlesnakes".
THANKS for the "Marathon Weekend", my friend - looking forward to Your next reaction!💕

This performance is from the then very popular music show “Beat Club”. This was the only and the first programme with popular music for the younger generation here in Germany. Even though I was much too young for this kind of music I remember watching it together with my two older brothers every Saturday,. (Younger sisters always want to do what their admired older brothers do!! )😊 . By the way, I didn’t understand a single word they were singing, but I managed to learn some English out of the songs. So I grew up with that kind of music and I´m still in love with it. Some years later the walls of my room were paved with pictures of the popstars, especially the Bee Gees. My mother wasn’t very happy about this. I’m so glad that now the younger generation starts to understand how genius their music was.

Love the old Bee Gees. So much talent and what a future in front of them. This was written by The Bee Gees for Otis Redding but he died in a car wreck before he had a chance to record. First recorded by Bee Gees. I’m sure other artists used as covers. Wow Mo’s voice here! He sang a lot of falsetto.

Otis Redding loved The Bee Gees song writing abilities and asked them to write him a song and they wrote this song for him. When he was killed in a plane crash they recorded it themselves in London.

    appreciated. Chad, you're

Here's a link to watch a huge TV live performance where Robin sings only one time that part. But unfortunately after, it lacks two others. It's so strange, a real frustrating void. I hate it. czcams.com/video/2i__9KY-sBI/video.html

So great! Exactly this German-TV show (BEATCLUB) I've been watching as an 13 year old boy. They came over me like thunder and lightning. Got me at once and I knew, I'd never ever change my mind about this music-geniuses. So my journey began and is on the run since nowadays. 'To Love Somebody' is maybe the most covered song ever. I've branded about 2 hours of covers on cd's until I gave up. And to make it clear, it's Robin, doin' that high "ah..........." and "come on..........." part at the end. BTW, not with falsetto, it's the highest note he arrives with "normal" voice. Yaknow it's been a lipsync-presentation. So maybe check out one of their so many liveshows, 'cause that song was always done by them. You can't miss it. So nice to hear their ability, whoever sang the verse, to flow into a phantastic three-part-harmony chorus, where always Maurice sang the high part, also able to to it with chestvoice. The range of Barry is bariton, what he does soul- and powerful. Or as we all know the best falsetto ever, so it's loud and clear, used with vibrato. Maurice's range is the widest. He's been able to sing from bass up to falsetto. In case of vocal-abilities, no other group can compare with the Bee Gees!

Yes love them all. Individual talent, but together...ULTIMATE!
They wrote Heartbreaker, and it was Maurice who insisted they record it too. He said after they wrote it for her, he cried on his way home because they were not recording it❤
They shared their whole heart without delay.
Even when the Bee Gees sing their music, each time line its amazing.
Yes other artists sing this and others. But none are as good or feeling its birth like The Bee Gees.
Yes Maurice has his own touches too.
Listen too them as time goes, same song...growing as they go.
Yes their dress...I have to remind myself sometimes their from London area😊
Michael Bolten sang it...and did a great job. But the Bee Gees wrote it and sing it amazingly.
Yes they all have the ability too go up or down.

I am so enjoying sharing your discovery of this great band, as I am also exploring their work, having only known their disco songs. Loved Maurices` vocal here, wow!. For a beautiful Barry led song try" Be who You are" Robin has made me cry on "Don`t fall in love with me," but his "Days of wine and Roses "is too beautifully sad to listen too even for a newbie fan. Keep up your journey it`s so appreciated. Much love to you and your daughter xx . I don`t know about your other subscribers but I`m fine with you reacting to audio only tracks

Oh Chad, this is just very 1967 Carnaby Street fashion. Barry and the brothers carry it off. I'm sure you have heard the song. So many artists have covered it. I'm thinking of Janis Joplin, Tom Jones, even Michael Bolton. Barry is 20 - he turned 21 in September that year. The twins are 17. Can you believe the maturity and timing these guys have at such a young age? I just love what Barry does with humming the word "in" before he comes in with "In my mind", and he waits until after the beat to sing "do" at "But what good does it do." All the brothers are true perfection.

No, it is not Maurice. The voice you hear here is Robin. Ofcourse Maurice is in the harmony but the distinct voice is Robin. Remember this is playback
This did not become a big hit from them but over the years it has become a signature song for them.
It was written for Otis Redding, but he sadly died in a plane crash before he could record it, so they did it themselves.
And yes it has recorded by many artists like Michael Bolton, Janis Joplin, Tom Jones, Michael Buble, Rod Stewart, Bonnie Tyler and many more.
My favorite cover is Keith Urbans version from the concert "Stayin’ Alive: A Grammy Salute to the Music of the Bee Gees" from 2017.
