The story behind the TBF Avenger is interesting.
For a more detailed account of the VT-8's land based Avenger attack on the IJN from Midway, check out the book "A Dawn Like Thunder" by Robert Mrazek. The book is a spectacular account of Torpedo 8 at Midway and Guadalcanal. The story of "The Last Avenger" is both inspiring and heartbreaking. Ensign Albert "Bert" Earnest was wounded by a cannon shell which exploded in his face during the attack. His Avenger severely damaged with elevator control and the hydraulic system shot out. Without a compass, he flew 200 miles back to Midway using dead reckoning by guessing his location based on the position of the sun. Ens. Earnest had to use trim to control altitude due to the loss of elevator control. He soon found out his Radioman Harry Ferrier was wounded but alive. Unfortunately, Gunner Jay Gunner was killed. In a show of exceptional airmanship and a little luck, the plane and crew found its way back to Midway where it made a crash landing. Of the men that went to battle in USS Hornet TBDs and Midway TBFs, only three survived with the other being Ensign George Gay.
This narration is covering up what really happened with Hornet's air group also historically known as " the flight to nowhere".
The photo is of the destroyer escort USS John C. Butler (DE-339), the lead ship of her class. She was commissioned on March 31, 1944.
You are right sir david!
SBD Dauntless - Scout Bomber Douglas. TBD Devastator - Torpedo Bomber Douglas. TBF Avenger - Torpedo Bomber Grumman; also TBM Avenger built for Grumman by GM (I think).
Sir Bob 🙏
Thanks!
I believe that the TBM was built by Martin. Thus torpedo bomber Martin.
@@richardm3023, the TBM variant was built by General Motors. The code for General Motors was "M". The Wildcat variant built by the General Motors was the FM-2.
The TBF Avenger was built under contract for Grumman by Ford.
Tone no. 4 search plane actually would have missed spotting TF 17 if it had been launched on time. Wasn't it Chicuma no. 1 that failed to find the US carriers on its search pattern?

Every description of the Japanese float plane's searches talk about the IJN cruiser TONE, and pronounce it like it were a sound or a musical note tone. But all Japanese names ending in the the vowel e pronounce that letter, instead of using English pronunciation rules and leaving it silent.
And BTW that search began the saga that ultimately sealed the fate for our carrier Yorktown. Although it was a sub that finally sunk her.
Good luck teaching a robot how to talk by youtube replies.
Agreed,@@jackbelk8527. It's as good as it's going to get. It is the listener that must adapt and interpret the inconsistencies in the narration!
AI has a lot to learn. Like the “bow” of a ship pronounced like “bow tie”. For now, we just have to set out brains to “autocorrect” or don’t listen until AI is actually “intelligent”! 😊
