  • How to Refill Camping Gas Canisters & Cartridges -
    Having watched @ScottishWanderer do this (you should check his channel, it's great,) I decided to have a go myself. I did encounter a problem the first time but that was user error and I talk about that in this video.

    Excellent video. Thank you. Great tips about weighing and marking the cans.

    The method of weighing is quite interesting. Nevertheless, I would advise a larger degree of safety, because gas mixtures can vary, I think. Also using two different weighing scales is important.
    Also maybe don't resur the same can too many times. The seals may be not designed to withstand many uses? I hope they are designed for that though.

      Thanks for the ideas and concerns. I've been refilling these cans for a couple of years now, but I have several and cycle them :D

      @@MoreThanJustaCleaner well, if any of them leaks eventually, you would need an early warning system such as an explosive gas detector. They work at like 40% or less of the LEL. (lower explosive (amount) level). Keep in mind that gas tends to leak downward (after losing momentum from the pressure it experienced) if its heavier than air (and a AFAIR it is) and thus it accumulates there. Any amount of static electricity such as rubbing your hand or pants etc could be enough for any small pocket of explosive mixture.
      You never know how uniformly the gas is mixing in the air. The detector could have some short delay or not detect what is a small space further yet.
      These are some. Considerations I have in mind. I recommend to get a proper refillable gas cylinder for safety reasons. For example they even make 1lb ones. Or 0.5 kg.

    • @undefinednull5749
      @undefinednull5749 Před 8 měsíci +1

      Some anecdote here: if for some reason you can't use the proper reusable 1lb ones, then at least maybe use them not more than 8 times (as someone has had a failure after 9th) and use the ones which had propane in them as that is a higher pressure gas than butane and thus it is more likely it is built with this in mind.
      Nevertheless, the proper reusable ones cost about 30 usd only on amazon for example..

    That canister wouldn't rupture just by filling it that way, it would take a lot of pressure before going pop. More than likely a fault in the can itself.

    Great video. Quick question - I have the same coleman 100g as the one in your video which is a butane/propane mix. It's half full but I want to top it up before a camping trip this weekend. However, the canister I want to use to refill it is pure butane.
    Do you know if it's safe to mix the two or should I not do that?

    • @MoreThanJustaCleaner
      @MoreThanJustaCleaner  Před 4 měsíci +1

      It's perfectly fine. The reason butane and propane are mixed is because butane doesn't burn well at low temperatures. Adding more butane will only make it better suited for warmer weather however you can always keep the canister out of the cold until you need it 👍😁

      @@MoreThanJustaCleaner Coleman Sportster stove. They can run on unleaded petrol. I used one daily for 19 months whilst I was homeless in a tent. They are excellent. I used to add a few mls of Redex each fill to help keep the soot build up to a minimum in the generator to prevent clogging, worked a treat. Cost about 2.5 pence to boil 600mls of very cold water. A litre of petrol would last me around 7 days so they are incredibly cheap to run.
