ISAN THAI FOOD FEAST IN PHUKET 🇹🇭 🍜 Searching for Thai Street Food in Bangtao Laguna

  • Today was my second meal back In Phuket In months. We are staying in Bangtao/Laguna, an expat heavy area in the northwest of Phuket which is not particularly well known for its decent Thai street food. You know me though, if there is good local Thai food to be had, I’ll find it!
Disaster struck at the first stop as the guay jub was shut but I persevered and found one of the best little Isan joints I could have hoped to find.
Tum Zaap Loei ร้านตำแซ่บเลย is my kind of place - a makeshift bamboo hut serving excellent Isan salads and grilled meats. The lady serving here speaks good English so my pigeon Thai wasn’t needed. I ordered Gai Yang - Thai Grilled Chicken, Nam Tok Kor Moo Yang - Grilled Pork Neck ‘Salad’, Tum Khao Phood - Somtum with Sweetcorn and some sticky rice for 210 THB - £4.67 / $6.30.
If you are staying in Bangtao I can highly recommend this little Isan shop.
Phuket can be a bit overwhelming if it's your first time visiting as it's so big, so I thought I'd do some videos to help break it down into sections so you can get some awesome street food wherever you go.
I also had an excellent coffee at Coffe Lab, which I think is the best coffee in the area. At 120 baht - £2.67 / $360 you are paying a premium but it’s a great cup.
An alternative a bit further out of town for half the price would be MORE COFFEE.

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this CZcams channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

I give the Roaming Cook a lot of credit, primarily because he goes off the beaten path, talks about the ingredients of food and speaks some Thai - he not be a fluent expert at it but he is attempting each episode which is what matters. Just this combination sets him apart from other travel/food CZcamsrs that really don't know anything about food at all and won't or can't speak the local language. He reminds me of the early days of Mark Wiens.

Isaan food is very delicious. and if you eat it anywhere
You have to be sure that Isaan people are the owners of the shop. No matter what region people cook this kind of food, it won't taste as good as what Isaan people do.

When I saw your sticky rice it reminded me of some trick that some Isan cook I know taught me. She told me that I should not leave the "Kratib" open, and I should always keep it closed as much as possible during my eating. Yes, it was just simple logic that the wind could dry out my sticky rice. But...still, I did not really realize before how important it is to the taste of the sticky rice. "Kratib" is actually more impressive that I thought. It is designed that way, and it uses that kind of material not for the purpose of beautifulness, but to keep the sticky rice fresh.

Lesson for the day, Gary. Loei, is the name of the northern province, the pronunciation and meaning, I believe, is the same as the word loei (เลย), which means make it happen, or already happened. For example, Sam says, "I want to jump into the pool." His friend, Jack, is egging him on as, "Go ahead and jump. In Thai, it would be like this...
    Sam: อยากจะโดดลงสระ.
    Jack: กระโดดเข้าเลย.
Therefore, Zap Loei = ALREADY delicious. 😋, which the vendor is certain that her food is...ALREADY delicious, and the customers/patrons have no need to worry. 😀

He has claimed a food to be his own copyright.
That food was Su Rong Hai, it was a drama story for a while.
However, Isan food has a specific culture that is similar to food from Laos because in the past, both Thai and Lao people used to live in the same kingdom.
If you notice, you can see that Isaan people have unique characteristics unlike people in other regions. And the local food that is the traditional way of life is very difficult to eat. Even if I'm a Thai person, let me eat Isaan food like a local. I still give up

I never had corn done in papaya salad before. I had string beans, cucumber, sour phase of mango done in papaya salad and they are delicious so I'm very curious about the corn version. What all versions have you had gary?

Corn is my absolute favourite and much easier to recreate when I’m back in the uk! I’ve had the ones you mentioned and a few more! Mixed fruit is an interesting one! Beetroot is good too!

There are definitely Isan spots in Patong I just don’t go there so I can’t tell you exactly which ones are good but I’ll ask around Jay 🙏 this place is great, curries (especially the massaman) and roti are fantastic. The chicken cashew nut is one of the best I’ve had. You have to stress if you want the food spicy! Pantai Seaview Restaurant Halal Food

@@theroamingcook All’s good. Patong food is run of the mill for the most part so I don’t get too excited about it. I’ve probably been to the place you recommended, it’s in the upscale area, 300B som tam and all that, so I usually don’t travel up there too often when I’m in town. Hella jealous of you right now though. Got 11 inches of snow today but making yum neua mala on Sunday just to feel a connection.

Love a good bit of Isaan grub, duchess! In terms of the channel, have you thought about hitting up Tim @ The Thaiger? They are nearly 100k subs now and are expanding their range of content to include more some travel/food stuff and have been looking for creators. Since their audience are all dirty farangs, your sort of stall/restaurant tips around the country could be a decent marriage and would increase your exposure. They recently recruited Bangkok Pat to do 1 video per week, maybe you could try something similar for them? Tim's currently in Patong, if you wanted to get him to do a face to face convo. And he's originally from Melbourne so you can ingratiate yourself with your knowledge there. He's funded by expat Londoner Michael Kenner (acts like a Pound Shop Alan Sugar) who also owns FazWaz. Just an idea obviously, but they have mentioned looking for a food vlogger recently, it would boost your profile, and - if you'll forgive me saying so - I think you would mesh well with their approach and style.

120THB for a cup of coffee is highway robbery. I've paid that and beyond for that in Thailand, but it makes no sense to me why a coffee made with nice beans would cost more than it does in Australia. Pretty sure I've paid high 100's on Sukhumvit before.

    • @theroamingcook
      @theroamingcook  Před 2 lety +1

I’ve you’ve been to Sukhumvit then you’ve paid that and more I’m sure. It’s also the same price as a Starbucks here. I didn’t actually order a large, that’s what threw me off! Every day since I’ve got the 90 baht cup. I agree though it’s expensive but I can justify that as I’ve been drinking coffee in the UK for two weeks 😂 Where I live in Bangkok a very good cup of house roasted coffee costs between 40 and 70 baht at the high end which is my ceiling.
