Man, I know you mentioned similarities to the Sopranos, but its crazy to see situations from the show (albiet twisted around and such) appear in real life mafia reality.-stomach cancer, lgbtq relationships, conflict between New York and Jersey regarding splitting zones . Great video!

I worked for local 394 and when the Sopranos was on the "guys" would talk about the show and how it drew from real life. When Tony takes the glasses without paying, the Esplanade episodes etc...

If you can find the book " Gangster No. 2 " , get it ! It explains all about the early mob with Abner Zwillman from Newark. He sat at the table wuth Luciano, Lansky, etc. His skill at organizing helped to form the Commission! The book is a real eye opener!😂😮😅

I know there are similarities between the Sopranos and the real life family but ppl have to realize that David Chase didn’t set out to recreate the real life family nor was every storyline on the show taken from what happened in real life. Some ideas were intentional. Some were taken from other families or stories the writers had heard about. And some similarities are purely coincidental.
Tony Soprano wasn’t based off Vinny Palermo. That’s just who happened to be the boss when the show started. The idea for Tony started when Chase wanted to write a show based on his twisted relationship with his mother but thought it would be more humorous if the guy was someone totally opposite of who he was. So he decided the guy should be really tough then thought it would be interesting if he was also a mob boss from NJ considering Chase was also from NJ. The decision to make him a mob boss would open the door for him to write about Tonys “family” outside his own real family.
There are some similarities between Tony and Vinny but they’re purely coincidental lol. They both have a strip club. The Bing originated from Stevie Van Zandt who introduced Chase to the idea that Silvio was a club owner. Something Stevie had previously written a show on and pitched to executives. Originally it wasn’t a strip club but a 70’s themed nightclub that had live music. Similar to the Copa. Chase liked the idea but it was quickly shot down by HBO because they thought it would be too expensive to invest so many resources into this extravagant 70’s themed club, that wasn’t even a focal point of the series. So it was changed to a strip club. A place NJ had an abundance of where they could easily shoot on location.
There are too many specific similarities to be coincidence, right down to Vito!

There's some other similarities from what I can tell though like the power sharing system, although it was different from the real one. Also, I'm sure Tony's personality has some similarities to Palermo's, but yeah it's 100% not supposed to be like a retelling.
the triumvirate had been done in the past, in sicily, (they had 3 clans running the whole thing in the 70's, Badalmenti, Bontade and Liggio). Not that good of an idea in the 90's in America though, if 3 bosses have to meet up and vote on things constantly, it kinds of exposes them to wiretaps

The more I listen to this story the more i question whether or not D’Mato was actually gay. Everyone above him wanted him gone anyways. They were literally looking for an excuse. So history has been formed by Dmatos girlfriend who was cheating on him with Rotando and a bunch of power hungry criminals. Idk about that.
