  • Surströmming is basically just fermented fish. Swedes recommend opening a can only when you're outdoors. The smell is extreme. So let's find out how dogs, with their sensitive nose and taste for delicious food (remember they sometimes eat poo) react to the smell of surströmming...

Dogs are (basically, mainly) carnivores and carnivores not only hunt, they sometimes scavenge for dead animals. So it's part of their survival instinct (dead animal smell: free meal).

    Some tips from a swede:
    1. Open it under water in a bucket
    2. Probably not supposed to eat it after due date, but honestly it's not like anyone would know the difference
    3. Most swedes wouldnt touch surströmming with a 6 feet stick. It's a northern tradition. Probably because they were starving at some point. Or as a bet that went out of control.
    4. It doesn't taste as bad as it smells. But it smells like death so that bar is quite low.
    5. You will burp the taste of death for at least 24h afterwards.

I myself love it, which is why I would never feed it to a dog. It has nothing to do with the fish itself, it's the Extreme salt that worries me. Dogs kidneys aren't as strong as human kidneys. And there is a possibility they could get kidney problems if ingested too much. Especially in large quantities in one sitting. One or two fish probably won't be a problem tho.

You know, it is actually not that much of a surprise that dogs like surströmming, because dogs often eat their own poop or poop from other dogs, even other animals. To us humans, surströmming smells like raw sewage, toilet waste, human feces, which some dogs have been observed eating anyway. Maybe they can tolerate it because dogs have a sense of smell 1000x that of humans, making our sense of smell like a black & white TV while they have "full color + High Definition" in their experience from using their nose. So maybe to the dogs, sewage contains a lot of aromas we humans are unable to sense.

Frankly, who needs another "stinky fish challange" with coughing and choking Americans?
Anyway, here are some basic rules from Sweden when it comes to eating surströmming (or fermented Baltic sea herring - NOT raw or sour fish).
Yes, it is smelly and salty, but for some reason surströmming has survived more than 500 years of recorded history in Sweden.
Fermentation has been used by mankind for thousand of years to conserve food (probably in shortage of salt).
Surströmming is produced in Norrland (northern part of Sweden) and mostly eaten during late summer or early fall).
The traditional premier date is on the third Thursday of August. Here are some basic and serious guidelines.
    (1) Surströmming should always be eaten TOGETHER with good friends who also lika it.
    (2) Leave your children and pets at some OTHER place before the meal (kids will hate the smell, dogs will love it).
    (3) Always OPEN the tin can and serve surströmming outdoors (for obvious reasons). The can is best opened under water in a bucket.
    (4) Never EVER eat surstromming straight from the tin can - and peel OFF the skin!
    (5) Always be sure to serve the RIGHT side dishes with surströmming (use google or see video below). No one in Sweden ever eat JUST surstromming.
    (6) After every bite, CLEAR your throat with a sip of ice cold Absolut Vodka - blue label, 80 proof (some prefer milk as an non alcoholic option).
The CHALLANGE is to give surströmming the respect it deserves and it will give you a food experience that will last a lifetime!
See this link for surströmming being served by an expert in the RIGHT Swedish environment to a delighted Jamie Oliver!

My chihuahua won't even eat tuna or fish sticks, shell wont eat apples with the peel still on, she won't even eat yellow or red apple. They have to be honeycrisp or something similar. My other rescue mutt will eat pickles, very spicy things, very sour things basically anything except for bananas which none of them seem to like. I haven't had a dog that will eat a banana. Some dogs are more adventurous others are picky eaters just like people. One thing that helps is to show them that it's ok to eat, eat a piece and show them then they will usually try it afterwards if they were on the fence.

The dog will eat surtrumming, its stinky but once they ate it they'll look for it later on because they got used to those not natural food for them. There is a Chinese version of it( its a food developed by the poor people for centuries), I forgot the name but if you interpret their word it says "Extreme Good taste but stinky" if you cook it with garlic, etc it smells rotten, really rotten but once you try to eat it there is this distinct taste that lingers in your taste buds. later part, if somebody cooks it you can smell the same aroma miles away it makes you hungry but it smells now like Aromatically good with a little bit of rotten smell but leaves your mind and taste buds looking for the taste again, Sustrumming is exactly like that, those centuries-old recipes. It's actually good for our system. wish you could have shown them eat it, they'll enjoy it because it's a natural enzyme which they know is Good for them,.

    • @Necronomous
      @Necronomous Před 6 lety +12

You as many people around here, doesn't even know how this fish are made. So shut up. IT IS FERMENTED FISH. So the salt it has, is the salt from the very fish of it self. SO IT IS NO SALT ADDED TO THIS FISH! Stupidity amongst comments, so this fish are quite harmless for dogs. Some predators in the nature, dig down leftovers of their prey. Making their meat ferment the same way. Perhaps you shall run out in the woods and let these wild animals stop doing that because you are afraid for them getting kidney failure?
