Diagnosing a Riding Lawnmower that Randomly Shuts Off

  • Step by Step!
Today we'll be going over a Craftsman riding lawn mower that randomly shuts off while cutting grass.
My customer said after about 20 minutes, it would lose power and shut off slowly, as if it wasn't getting fuel.
He also mentioned that when he would try to restart it, nothing would happen, as if the battery would be completely drained.
Then, when he would go to remove it, he said the cables would be hot.
Once he pushed the mower back to his garage and charged the battery, he said the mower would start right up and run just fine.
Sounds like we have an intermittent electrical issue to resolve!

      Nicely detailed, appreciated 🤙🏼
      Appreciated your vid ..
My Q is is a lengthy description
I have an older Craftsman lt1000
      .. B & S ..
Sat all year, replaced new Battery, air filter, Fuel filter, & belts
Initially rough start, but ran approx 30 mins then ‘silently died’.. wouldn’t even turn over (as if it was dead)
.. 10 or so mins later, it did start but extremely ROUGH idle
.. shut it off,--.. shortly later started & ran fine for approx 20-25 mins, this time it slowly sputtered then died,
shortly later it started, idle was fine ( ✋🏼 not rough) but died again after approx 20 min run 🤷🏼‍♀️ .. back & forth ..
Hopefully you can throw some ideas
My couple thoughts, coil is getting hot? .. or solenoid .. or something with fuel line .. I’m not that savvy with mowers, but trying to learn .. 😉
Thank you for your time 🤙🏼🤙🏼

Excellent video, Many of those Craftsman riders had the chokes not adjusted correctly from the factory. I had one this week that customer said started hard when cold. Choke was slightly open when on full choke. I adjusted it and it starts way faster now. I have had several of these over the past few years. Thanks for the video's.

Eliminator Performance. It’s truly amazing how big problems develop from such little things that people commonly overlook. Over the years, I have made protective boots from sections of rubber hose and or good quality split loom to protect cables, heater hoses and radiator hoses. Recently, I was gifted a very similar garden tractor to the one featured in your video. The reason for the previous owners getting rid of the garden tractor was that they thought that the steering was bad. After I took possession of the garden tractor, I started the engine and went for a drive. Everything worked pretty much as it should. After mowing for a while in an area where I could test the steering - I drove the tractor back to my driveway and immediately attempted greasing the steering spindles. The left spindle took grease, but the right side would not take grease. The next day, I purchased a new battery and so I mowed in another area where I would be steering quite a bit. I tried greasing the right spindle and which accepted grease as it should. The Lucas Red N Tacky did the trick. Thanks For The Very Good Video.

I have a similar Craftsman that had a new 20HP Briggs and Stranton engine installed. I had the steering sort of lock us on me once until I forced it, then I had a problem of the engine puttering for a period of time like it was starving for fuel, but cleared itself. So, I'll be doing a visual inspection of the wiring soon. Thanks friend for this video, you get good by us.

Very informative video. You were mentioning about finding a parasitic draw on a vehicle and said you pull fuses and check voltage between the pins. This could extend your diagnostic time if the parasitic draw is from a module not going to sleep. By removing the fuse or disconnecting the negative battery cable you basically forced it to sleep and the draw would go away. Yanking fuses and cables only works when there are no modules involved.

You are amazing. Right to the point, with excellent diagnostics tips anyone can understand. I've watched 3 videos in the past week and I learn something valuable every time. I don't even look for Simpliciy vidoes since it appears the brand doesn't really matter. First was the solenoid switch, then the start switch, now the random cut out, which is what I'm dealing with. If that's not it, I'll be back to look for the next video. You make it fun to troubleshoot. (and easy). I also like that you explain what is going on and how everything works. That's the icing on the cake. Keep up the great work!

Nice job. When servicing a customer tractor I always go over the wiring looking for what you just found, making sure wires aren't near or touching moving parts and rubbing on unprotected surfaces. I just add a few minutes to the service time and add a couple bucks to the bill. Pays in the long run when indicating this simple inspection on the bill. Nobody complained yet.

Eliminator Performance, You sound quite knowledgeable and have good sense. It would be best if you try to articulate certain technicalities properly. For anyone reading this, electricity does not take the path of least resistance. Electricity takes all paths. I know what Eliminator was getting at, being a short is a path of less resistance than the intended path which has components in it which have higher resistance values, but never the less the electricity will take all paths available. A short turns a series circuit in to a parallel circuit. It might seem like a nit pick but it's important for proper fundamental understanding. Especially for beginners.

Got a used Craftsman a few weeks ago. It appeared pretty clean and well taken care of. But it had randomly died on me a few times. Seemed to happen when I'd push down the brake. Don't guess it's a big issue though, since it only happens on occasion and it'll start right back up afterwards.
It's also backfired a couple of times. Though, idk if it's related, and I can't recall it happening in correlation with any specific action that I did.
