- Nobody's Fool - Main Title - Howard Shore
Wonderful piece of music composed by Howard Shore in 1994. The song is the main title of the film 'Nobody's Fool' with hollywood legend Paul Newman in the leading role. - Hudba
This is one of Newman's best. A great movie about nothing. But is it? This a movie about everything. Family. Family by blood, but also family by love. It's about taking for granted what you have. It's about wishing you had more. It's about making the best of what you have. No super hero here. Just a guy who didn't or couldn't face responsibility having thrust on him and rising to it. When movies are made, there is always comments on how true to life it is. Well, this one is as true to life as they come. Rest easy Paul and thanks.
Wonderful comment. Straight to the point.
That’s the most fantastic review of this film I have ever read.
Wonderfully put, John. Thanks for your nice comment.
Well said, I believe this to be his most underrated work. The supporting cast is fabulous led by the ever wonderful Jessica Tandy.
This is a truly excellent description of what this movie is all about. Not sure I would have understood it fully in my 30’s, but in my 60’s it struck such a chord! Truly one of my very favorite movies!!
Back when Hollywood cared about stories and not just superheroes
The best movie most people have never heard of. Newman really at his best.
Agreed, even when I was 14 when it came out, It was one of my favorite movies, now nearing 40 it means even more.
My favorite movie of all time. A film with heart and soul.
Unbelievable movie.
Saw this gem multiple times when it came out. Newman’s last great role. I like to see it as a sequel to Cool Hand Luke, if Luke had lived.
Magical. Iw was 19 and solely by accident saw this in the theater and fell in love with the movie. 25+ years later I'm still obsessed with it, and not I, my Wife, or friends can tell me why i'm obsessed with it. I just love it. It's so perfect, so charming and I'm pleased to see i'm on the only one.
Newman's character "Sully"
is a late middle-aged, cantankerous, divorced, world-weary, foundational citizen with a big heart, bad luck, salty mouth, and debilitating knee arthritis. And sadly, long-estranged from his son. (I have also just described myself) ;)
So, given the personal connection, I could watch "Nobody's Fool" on an endless loop and never tire of it. I understand all of Sully's frustrations. And I root for him over and and over again.
Howard Shore's brilliant score is somehow melancholy yet uplifting.
There is a yearning to it that beckons you to celebrate life, while also breaking your heart. Genius. It turns this small town, comedic, existential soap opera into an actual opera.
Kudos to Richard Russo (novelist) for creating this elegy to small town hardships and sweet, humble victories. Everything about this story is real Americana. And, dramatically speaking, you rarely see such growth in every character (even down to the smallest player).
.
Robert Benton (Director & Screenwriter) did an amazing job bringing this to life. And he was fortunate to be the beneficiary of a very cold, snowy winter in 1993-94 in the Hudson Valley which added a majestic and brutal texture.
Outstanding performances by Jessica Tandy (her final role for which she won and Oscar), Melanie Griffith, Gene Saks (Wirf), Philip Bosco (Judge), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Officer Raymer), Pruit Taylor Vince (Rub Squeers), Alexander Goodwin (Will, Sully's grandson), Dylan Walsh (Peter, Sully's son) and Bruce Willis (Sully's foil).
"Peter's my son. You're my best friend." That line always got to me.
This movie will always have a very special place in my heart.
I was born and raised in Fishkill, NY.... A small town of about 2,000. And in the winter of 1993, as a 5-year-old, I remember my father taking me to Elm Street to watch them film the scene where Sully gets pulled over on the sidewalk.
Additionally... M's Cozy Corner was a real coffee shop that also appeared in the 2002 comedy Super Troopers. The owner died in 2004 and it has since become a Methodist church.
My childhood is wrapped around this movie in every way possible. It was filmed almost entirely within 15 minutes of where I grew up.
I didn't appreciate it at the time. But now I appreciate this masterpiece beyond belief. Truly an underrated film in my opinion.
RIP Paul Newman, and thank you.
Pilotguy44 Do you remember the name of the diner -- it may have been located in Beacon, but I am not sure -- where "The Bank" almost walks out the door with the ketchup? A few years after the filming, my wife, my son and I drove up there from the Bronx for dinner to celebrate my wife's birthday and for old time's sake (our son Alexander, who is only a few months older than you, is the actor who played "Will" in the film). The entire restaurant had become a veritable shrine to the movie -- the walls were coated with Nobody's Fool memorabilia -- but every last item we ordered (with the exception of the ice cream) was rancid or worse. The food was so bad it was beyond lamenting -- we laughed about it all the way home. I would be very surprised if it remained in business much longer.
polyphoniac Wow! That's a great story, thanks for sharing! The diner you are referring to is The Yankee Clipper. It is on the corner of Fishkill Avenue (Route 52) and Main Street. It is still very much open and in business, although I've personally never eaten there. Check out their photo gallery here: www.beaconyankeeclipper.com/gallery/
Pilotguy44 Lucky you. I spent my 20's in small towns like yours, working on dredges, dredging out harbors, building breakwalls, etc. Of course, these jobs were between 4 months, and 2 years to complete, but we all found motels and other places to live while working. All over the Great Lakes... from Dunkirk, Tonawanda, Rochester, and Buffalo,New York, to Cleveland, and several small towns east and west of there, to Wisconsin, Indiana, and all over, really.
The town in this film is like so many others... similarities, but differences everywhere. Some of the greatest people I'll ever know live(d) in these towns. All with neighborhood taverns, bars, and pubs that was home to some wonderful wit and humor, that was evidenced in this film. I am lucky to have these small town memories. Wouldn't give them up for anything.
Masterpiece!!!
@@X6insane6X One day i'm going all the way to this town just to eat at this diner where Sully was.
One of my all-time favorite films. I played this soundtrack over and over while my wife was pregnant with my son, hoping this beautiful score would stick with the little guy forever.
This is an excellent movie! It became my favorite Paul Newman movie of all time. I give this DVD as Christmas gifts.
Classic film. Newman should have had the Oscar.
"WE wear the chains we forge in life." "Do you remember who said that, Donald?" "You did, Miss Beryl, in the 5th grade." I absolutely love this movie, and the beautiful soundtrack. So many memorable lines, and the acting ensemble is magnificent. My sister, who actually met Paul Newman face-to-face when he was just becoming famous, said she couldn't watch this movie because she didn't like seeing an aging Paul Newman. I think she missed the boat--this is who all his younger characters became in their older years. Maybe I'll have to tie her to a chair and make her watch it!
A classic ! He became a better actor as he got older !
Newman deserved the Oscar for his portrayal of Sully. Hollywood didn't like his rebellious nature so they snubbed him.
My favorite film EVER.
The Oscar's suck. They have missed the boat on so many movies in the past few decades, I can hardly take it seriously anymore.
One of the great performances and movies of all time.
Absolutely. The truck scene is pure magic. How he stares his grandson....
@@fesparizyou just brought a 😢 to my eye
This movie was the culmination of 50 years of acting. I read the comment about someone not wanting to watch this movie because she didn't want to see [an older] Paul Newman after meeting him as a child at the start of his career. I urge that person to watch Paul Newman 40 years later as he grew as an actor and person. While most of Newman's work was and is memorable, this movie shows off his skills best. Paul Newman was "Nobody's Fool," and only he and a handful of others could elicit emotions as he did in this film. Now that the world knows of Bruce Willis' declining condition, this film makes it more worthwhile to watch. Hopefully, Mr. Willis will get his due when it comes to acting. He was not just an action star, but a damn good actor.
Great movie of his best. Paul Newman was, is, and always will be out finest actor.
OUR fines actor. Cool Hand Luke is an epic.
We need a blu ray special edition of this forgotten gem.
HOLLYWOOD needs more of this....
While I will always remember Paul Newman as the strikingly handsome and talented actor that he was. This movie best represents his actual acting ability, and I am saddened he didn't receive the acknowledgment for his performance. The opening theme song in this movie is some of the best work of Howard Shore. This particular theme always brings tears to my eyes and the sad feeling that Paul Newman is no longer with us.
Cool hand Luke is always with us ! He left that spirit that never surrenders !
This theme brings tears. So wonderful. "You have to start somewhere". Indeed Sully, Indeed. Next to Gran Torino my favorite movie of all time.
I see many things to identify with in this film.. the music tears my heart out, so sad yet so pleasant... I watch this over and over at times when I wonder if I am deserving of forgiveness for the mistakes I have made in my life that affected other people... wonderful movie, beautiful music... thanks for posting this...
lwc2009 the tin whistle has the loneliest sound in an otherwise optimistic sounding piece of music.
we all made mistakes that affected others, think about that alot, but try to do better by people going forward
This movie is the way I want to remember Newman. Poignant, melancholy with a wink. The fake leg, the kid, the cop, the lawyer and Jessica. Will I forget this? Not now, not ever. If Newman did keep the truck from what I hear he probably souped it up with some sort of jet engine. From what I hear.
Not now not ever..but would you like a cup of tea
Classic story telling the way movies are supposed to be! Never too late to be a Father, A Grandfather, a friend! The short piece about how domestic violence ruins generations. A wonderful movie!
This movie really hit home. I was born and raised in Elimra, NY 45 minute drive south of Bath, NY. So I could relate to the characters, the scenery, and setting. I now live in Rochester, NY 90 minutes north. But every time I head back to my home town I always pass by Bath and I now think of this movie. Both funny but touching.
this was just an absolutely wonderful movie. Great story, great characters, beautiful music, great performances by all - an absolute gem of a movie !!
Fantastic movie Newman at his best!
I teach this movie to all...its perfection.
Great movie, great score by Howard Shore. What a beautiful piece of filmmaking. Period.
Pure brilliance in every sense of the word. The acting, music, story etc. Paul Newman and Jessica Tandy is acting at its best. One of my favorite movies. If you have not seen it, you missing a classic.
A small town failure that no one can live without. Sully is writer Richard Russo’s greatest creation and Robert Benton and Paul Newman magically bring him to life. “ It’s not going to be easy being you for three days you know.”
I LOVE THAT MOVIE AND I LOVE PAUL NEWMAN
What a wonderful movie. And I love this score.
"Are you sure I can't fix you a nice cup of tea?"
"Not now. Not ever."
"He is my son, You are my best friend." I'll never forget.
This film is up there at the top now, up there with It's A Wonderful Life and Scott's Scrooge and The Bishop's Wife and, on the lighter, lesser side even Christmas in Connecticut 1944.
It grows and deepens and widens to be ONE OF THE TOP/GREATEST "END OF YEAR" HOLIDAY FILMS EVER MADE and like Capra, they didn't even know they were doing it.
Newman here surpasses everything he's ever done and if you wanna say The Hustler, Hud, Cool Hand Luke, The Verdict...OK, you can.
BUT IT IS THIS FILM THAT LOOKS AT THE DEEPEST LAYERS IN HUMAN BEINGS, Russo is great at that here and Newman touches it all with such grace and depth, understanding and compassion.
Those layers are all now trashed in America, lost forever, like this nation and all humans, going Over The Cliff soon enough.
Howard Shore's opening theme is unbelievable, simply leg breaking, you will cry, son, and cry like you see Pruitt Taylor Vince as Rub do, his tender suppressed pain sears the soul with The Lost Road Not Taken. He's superb.
DEEPEST LAYERS: like George Bailey we see Sully's life as if he never lived it until finally he does embrace it--another Lost Road Not Taken. Sully's grandson taking that long slow terror-filled walk to give the artificial leg to Gene Saks is THE LONG SLOW CLIMB OUT OF THE OEDIPAL COMPLEX Sully was in and it was eating him alive. The impossibility for "luck" to bring you riches, instead it's embracing love and loving that rewards you. The angst of aging, of no more Melanie Griffiths, no more of the kind of joy/pain that only Youth Experiences. The acceptance of death in the end and it's Tandy's own death at the end of filming that drives that home, ironically if you didn't know she died. Sully out in the REAL ***bitter cold and snow*** IN HIS SOCKS helping the crazy/but-sane woman WHO'S IN A NIGHTGOWN and whose daughter owns/works in the Diner will touch you to the quick, HELPING OTHERS HELPS YOURSELF.
BUT ABOVE ALL this deep film rings all the changes on LOVE BETWEEN THE GENERATIONS, grandfathers-fathers-sons-grandsons, HOW SOME MAKE IT...and some don't.
As a few have mentioned here.... Paul at his best. This has become my favorite movie ever. Starring of course...my favorite actor ever. I just love this movie so much...for so many reasons. Too many to discuss but I can not urge those that haven't seen it to do so...and it will only be your first time of many I promise. Also very important to mention that this was Jessica Tandy's last film and I'm so glad she was chosen for it because she was absolutely spot on brilliant. Thank you Mr. Newman. Thank you Mrs. Tandy. You'll never know how much this film meant to me and always will.
What a beautiful movie with an exquisite music score. I just remember how lovely Melanie Griffith was and the sadness of her character. A young Dylan Walsh and the unforgettable Jessica Tandy brought it to a new high!. Loved it ! Most people never heard of it. They are missing out!
Verissimo quello che dici! e fortemente triste anche.
the music stays in your heart................
I stil remember the music
great pleasing music by howard shore and the movie is one of my favorites everybody is director, editor, cinematographer & THE ACTORS HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB
its a lesser known movie of the great man SIR PAUL NEWMAN
Long Live Sir Paul Newman
WOW !!!
This music got to me the first time I heard an stays in me still.
Great movie ...
Love this movie and l was in love with PAUL
To this day, I often use some of the best lines in this movie. "Not now, not ever" and of course, "You're a man among men". I still live in a sleepy town in upstate New York and with all the slushy snow and the gray skies, the local owned coffee shop, and the local ordinary folks, this movie struck a chord with me when I first saw it many years ago and still has a place in my heart to this day. I salute all the Sully's of the world.
I loved this movie and Paul Newman's performance! I grew up in upstate NY in a town like Bath. I now live in North Carolina. I tell anyone(if they're interested)-if you want to know a lot about growing up in a small town in the Northeast-watch this movie!
"SchönUndFrei", ein sehr schön Musikstück. Vielen Dank.
Loved this movie, loved the music. Such a special story, small town man learns to become the glue that holds people's lives together. For me personally Mr Newman in the final scene looks just like my father and grandfather falling asleep in an old chair after a hard days work. My mother is a bit of Jessica Tandy. She was a country school teacher and like a God when she would go back to her small town. I remember the local sheriff stopping her car and asking her to please put on her seat belt. "You know i taught you in school and you are going to give me a ticket?" No ma'm. .
PAUL NEWMAN IS COOL GUY I LOVE THIS MOVIE
THIS WAS GREAT MOVIE LOVE THIS SONG I LISTEN ALL TIME❤
Heartwarming, I love this film!
I've always loved this movie and everthing has already been said about it. Or nearly everything: I'd like to highligt the part where Newman let the kid drive the van. Imho, the best scene. How he looks at his grandson!
PAUL WAS NOBODY FOOL❤
Beautiful haunting soundtrack,Sir Paul Newman,a class act
So right. Hauntingly beautiful. One of the best scores of all time. Makes me want to cry and travel back in time to my home all at the same time.
Great music

Underrated film. Love this movie. Connected to it.
PAUL NEWMAN IS COOL HAND LUKE I LOVE THIS MOVIE
Genial
never forget
PAUL was the best
Priceless.
4K being released on 12/27/2022.
fabuleuse musique et merveilleux film 👍
Movie which makes you feel warm inside. About what matters, why it matters and also mostly about what we need to let go! Here I am talking to myself. Not preaching or teaching. Just getting lost in the movie with a sense of needing to be more like Newman in life when he is a man amongst men. The need for belonging and belonging in a small community and being cared for. How wonderful. How powerful and how utterly fragile. May the warmth of love surround your soul in all times but mostly when the coldness of world darkens our sights.
My favorite and Road to Perdition of Newman’s end career.
Thanks, but subscribing to another music app wasn't what I was looking for. I wanted to purchase the soundtrack, and for some reason Apple Music doesn't have this particular soundtrack. However, it was nice to listen to this beautiful theme song again. Thank You!
Love this comment section
I remember when Matthew McConaughey first came to the scene, they called him the new Paul Newman. But time has shown that is not correct. There was something natural and effortless about Newman and this movie shows that beautifully, though many of his movies do too. He wasn't caught up in his own image as MM seems to be, but there is still hope for him as I think he can still evolve.
A good movie just like COOL HAND LUKE
Not now! Not ever!
Am I the only one to see that his character is the same as Smiths in "Lilies of the Field"? Army background, good with his hands, real self confident stands by his friends.
Me too
Couldn't agree with pblehan more!!! A must see for Newman fans
Viven de poco....
does anyone have the piano notes to this?
Ni mu...ya sabéis..de ahí 😮😮
I want to know who the three soulless blackholes are that gave this a thumbs down.
Very good movie
Paul Newman is "a man among men"
