The track at 3:49 is from a part of the movie that along with the ending of of the film, is so moving, that the film is elevated to a status that's almost impossible categorise.
I remember as a 19 year old back in '86 thinking to myself, WTF have I just witnessed in that theatre?
    Horror? Sci-Fi? Love Story? Tragedy?
All these years later, I like to just think of it as a masterfully made film that I was lucky enough to see on release.
A film that has scenes that still haunt me to this day.
    Modern Day Classic Movie . . .

Shore deserved an Oscar for this magnificent work. I've just finished reading George Langelaan's book where the original short story "The Fly" is included, and this score fits perfectly with the dark, solemn mixture of tragedy and wonder he crafted for his imaginative tales.

5:29 is when Brundlefly, after merging with his own machine and becoming a horrific amalgamation of flesh and metal, places the gun barrel up to his head, begging to be put out of his misery. The last shred of humanity within him begging to be freed from his mutated body.

While I for many reasons find The Exorcist to be the most effective movie, ever made... I came to remember this masterpiece, and to be honest I actually find this movie better than the aformentioned.
Seemingly horrific in a different way, it conveys a deeper emotional impact, balancing between true felt horror and agony for a very lovable man, where The Exorcist is purely targeting the viewer with fear beyond reckoning, questioning science and belief.

@harsawa What about "Videodrome" and "Scanners"? Those soundtracks were pretty good as well. I mean, they weren't nearly as emotional as "The Fly" and definitely not as good, but they weren't meant to be this emotional or operatic. The strange, trippy, electronic soundtrack for those two movies were not too bad.
