They didn't patch out BLJs or remove "so long bowser." They just ported a different version of the game than what most people played. The version on the Switch is called the Shindou version and has been around for well over 2 decades at point. This version has a few things fixed or changed, like BLJs, that the original version doesn't have.
So, is it like the difference between PAL and NTSC versions of a game? Or am I thinking of something else?
@@Trevthehedgehog7 This is more like a taking what they probably considered the final release with fixed bugs. Japan typically was a NTSC region. NTSC and PAL primarily came down to video encoding that were used to display video on older tvs of the time period. Things like slightly 30 FPS at 720x480 for NTSC (USA) vs 25 fps at 720x576 for PAL (Europe)
Trevthehedgehog7 Actually, the Shindou version was a version which was basically a re-release in japan with some patches that have been previously stated. It was Japan exclusive so that is why most are unfamiliar with it
But still, it just sucks.
@@SketchHusk why? If you need to speed run with bljs, you already knew you needed a different version.
It's worth it, it would be way better if Bowser did not change his sexuality tho
Bro, are you following me? xd
Why they do that? I don't think anyone honestly minded that XD
He’s screaming he’s bi.
let the man be himself
Hello fellow K. Rool!
As a wise man once said in another CZcams comment..
“It’s a collection of three great games, not a great collection of three great games”
I’m definitely having so much fun with All stars, and I think it’s really good, but Nintendo was pretty lazy with this collection.
True! The games individually are great! Each one i could spend a lot of time into! However, the collection is pretty bland and boring.
WRONG!
Collection of 2 great game and the worst one. Seriously, I hate the fact people want to forget that Sunshine was hit with the Gamecube curse and was hated until years later where sudden it because one of the beloved....
Linkaro
I appreciate your opinion. But please never say “GameCube curse” ever again.
Jugular John I think he was thinking of Wind Waker?
That's about the best way to say it. For the effort they put in this should really have only been 30 dollars.
Mario 3D All-Stars’ Mario Sunshine OST Description: “Enjoy the bouncy, tropical sounds of Isle Delfino, released here for the first time!”
Giivasunner “I am 4 parallel universe ahead of you.”
You could also listen to Delfino Plaza in SMM2
Id like to point out that the cutscene music has never before been released, so it's technically not lying.
@@AniMariBro I'm so happy we finally have the cutscene music released publicly without any extra sound effects.
Brent actually doing a ‘review’: never thought it would happen. Then again, I didn’t think Steve would make it to Smash, so what do I know?
2020 has been a really weird year
True that
The second part made me laugh so hard, but yeah I didn't expect Steve either. Though he's a nice inclusion imo.
I think that the limited-to buy thing is what triggered most people myself included
Also, the fact that it is charged full-price despite being pretty slapped together with no additional content whatsoever besides a bare-bones sound test.
@@Tarkus_H and lets not forget all three are emulated
@@Plotpurotto That's fine as far as possible, but the effort on Nintendo's part doesn't really feel like much and I prefer to say that it could have been much better because in the end .
¿What is it more difficult?
¿Create a new game from zero or make a good Port of three games that weigh almost nothing?
True
I feel like I only bought this because 1) nostalgia & 2) that damn limited release. The games are great, but the ports feel rather unremarkable, and not only did they omit Galaxy 2 entirely, they are also being compared to other remastered/remake collections like N. Sane, Reignited, and every Metal Gear and every Megaman Legacy Collections, most of which had more game and/or sold at a lower price. Someone made this comment that perfectly describes 3D All-Stars, “This isn’t a great game collection, this is a collection of great games.”
Every port is unremarkable. It's a port, it doesn't have differences
you got got, consoomer
Absolutely, the collection could have been much better than just being able to play 3 (great) games and have their OSTs, what about adding some extras like being able to play spinoffs or something like that? (And like, being able to see concept art of the games or adding other things... 60 dollars doesn't seem justificable for this (it would been better at 40 or even 50...)
@@Mqstodon the problem is that if the port is unremarkable, it shouldnt cost 60 dollars
@RosesBubble That’s not entirely true. A port isn’t just limited to just putting the game on a different console. Example being the Whitehead ports of Sonic 1, 2, and CD. Those games not only got neat little touch-ups but were also given addition content like new characters, a time attack mode, and other secrets. Those ports actively improved the OG games and made them the definitive versions, and all three Sonic ports together would cost less than $10. 3D All-Stars just makes playing Mario first three 3D games more accessible, and even then, that’s not much of a strength with the whole limited release deal.
The issue I have is Nintendo could have done so much better. But it just looks like they did a lazy job. I bought Sonic Mega Collection on GameCube for £8 which not only had nearly 20 games but also had extras to view artwork, manuals, trailers and concept art. I think that’s why people were complaining about the menu in 3D All Stars not because of how it looked. I hope they update the game to at least add in a way to change the controls but it seems unlikely
I bought the sonic collection too, and it’s lit. I seriously don’t get how anyone can look at this collection, compare it to the megaman and sonic collection both of which cost way less, and say the Mario collection is great. It ain’t, I mean they couldn’t even be fucked to make 2 of the 3 games 60 fps. It’s sad.
They did it
This game doesn’t feel like a celebration of Mario’s 3D history. It feels like a way just to boost switch sales at the end of the year. Especially with that limited release. It is a cash grab
Meme Man that’s simply not true, and although that depends on your definition of a cash grab, I think it’s safe to say that most people don’t consider most games to be cash grabs. Take games like breath of the wild, super Mario odyssey, super smash bros ultimate, Crash 4, and so many more games that clearly have so much passion and work put into them by a development team that truly cares to make a good game. If you compare those games to 3D all stars, you will quickly find out that there IS no comparison. Only being able to play 3 games of Mario’s 3D history and nothing else, lack of an updated aspect ratio and frame rate for Mario 64 and sunshine, no special features, no controller configurations, no save states, lackluster menu and title screen, and so on, and so on. The key thing is that nothing in this collection screams “passion”, or any semblance of effort put into it at all. Especially compared to the games I just mentioned, or almost any other collection out there. All of this and the fact that it is a limited release solidifies its status in my mind as a cash grab. A lot of effort clearly goes into a lot of games imo, so I don’t agree that most games are cash grabs
@Meme Man at least some games put effort into "grabbing money"
Meme Man Yes. I am. I’ll agree it isn’t a very big problem but it contributes to this whole collection not having a lot of passion for the series in it. Compare it to Kirby’s anniversary on the Wii. It shows Kirby running through a hall and eating the things you want to interact with. 3D all stars not only clearly has less effort put into it, but it doesn’t reference anything about Mario’s history at all. Imagine if whenever you picked a game, the Mario model of that specific game would stomp on it before it started. All I’m saying is that a menu usually shows us firsthand how much love was put into an anniversary, with how much fanfare there is and whatnot, and 3D all stars has none of it
Did u buy it? Because if you did then your argument is invalid because the only way Nintendo would ever listen is if mainstream media had an outburst or their game didn’t sell well
Adam Aneston How is my argument invalid exactly? I bought the collection to see what was in it and how it played so I could accurately describe what it entails, and I concluded from playing it myself that it is a lazy cash grab so Nintendo can boost their sales for the end of the year. I do somewhat regret buying it
Love this game or hate it, it'll always hold a very, very important place in my heart. This game was the last thing my mom ever got me. I miss her.
Oh shit, that recent? Damn dude, my condolences, honest.
Aw, that's sweet and sad. Hope your mother is in heaven.
Sorry for the loss
Cool man. Cool.
So sad man, and recent i hope you live a good life
I’m happy younger people get to experience these games legally, but I’ll pass on purchasing it. I have all the games already on original hardware and Wii Virtual Console anyway
See that’s what I was thinking I have all the originals too
It’s worth the price if you want three great games at once. However, it doesn’t excuse the lazy effort on Nintendo’s behalf. Mario deserved a bit more than this.
But I’d say it’s a good purchase.
It was a "good" purchase for me because I'm a Mario nut and want this games to be easily accessible to me, but in basically every other regard but convenience this is a terrible collection. The games in it are all fantastic, but the collection itself is so incredibly rushed and over priced it's kind of ridiculous. It also dash all hopes of me ever getting the HD Mario 64 remake of my dreams, so there's that too.
Please add to this, since the above video just has these.
List of faults: Controls for Mario sunshine are designed for switch not GameCube controller.
The games are exactly the same as the original, not remastered.
FFKonoko These are problems for other people. I really couldn’t care less about the controls.
I saved up 5 bucks on this, is not much but still
See, I get what your saying about the criticisms about the menu, but I think the thing that bothers most people (including me) isn’t that it looks bad, but that it looks lazy. The original Xbox One interface was arguably bad, but definitely didn’t feel lazy. If this is supposed to be a celebration of the Super Mario Series, then the main menu definitely should NOT feel lazy in the slightest.
Dude, it’s a menu -_-
How is it lazy? It's simple and looks good, it makes it really easy to start playing. It's not lazy
RosesBubble it’s very lazy compared to other collections it’s just so fucking boring look at the spyro and crash collection (we’ll ignore the fact that those remakes in general had a lot more effort put into them) they’re simple yes but look great and allows you get into each game very quickly also the Kirby collection has an amazing menu and it has bonus things about the characters legacy, 3D all stars is just the games and the soundtracks ripped from the games themselves there’s no concept art, info about the games development etc these little things would make it actually feel like a celebration
@@FFContent That's exactly what I'm saying.
@@parkrowrow7414 Doesn't matter. Everything with the Mario label should have the highest amount of effort and attention put into it.

My own personal issues with the port mostly stem from the similar releases we've had these last few years.
Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy was a complete remaster of the first 3 games with new everything except level geometry, and it cost $40
Same deal with Spyro Reignited Trilogy, new everything, $40.
Then this comes along and it's 3 poorly emulated ports for $60.
It just doesn't seem worth it.

@@joaonitro5149 and how is this an argument in favor of 3DAS? it just highlights that the lowest effort one costs more.
@@es5845 this isnt a argument in favor, i am just correcting you
3D allstars isn’t that though it’s just supposed to be a port of three games you shouldn’t compare them as it’s not fair and both of those games are made by the same company and these aren’t remakes remasters are just better looking versions of an old game that’s what allstars is you can’t have issues with that
@@powerfullpummel6417 I think it's a fair comparison when the remake, which takes more effort to make costs less than the remaster
I think I'm in the same boat as a few people where, I've only played 64 DS, never played Sunshine, and have only played a little bit of Galaxy. I think it just depends on how much experience you've had with these games in general and since these are basically 3 brand new 3d mario games that I can take on the go, for me, this is a pretty good deal imo.
I don't think anybody thinks about this when they immediately say the collection sucks, even after playing a good bit of all of these games I think this is a great collection.
Holy shit you just described my experience with these 3 games
I literally had this exact experience. I dropped galaxy once I reached mega leg because the controls were just so bad that I couldn't deal with them. I also think my nunchuk started drifting at that point.
this is _kinda_ my experience... except i have played galaxy 1 to completion (NOT 100%, my name isn’t jirard) twice. you won’t see me complaining about the lack of galaxy 2; i love the first one *that* much!
as for the others, i got 64 ds a few years ago and i still love it, but i’ve never played sunshine before. i’m curious enough to want to play sunshine as well as the og 64.
so yeah, i’d say most people are in our boat cuz most people looking at this are my age (i’m 21); we own a wii and a ds from when we were kids, and are too young to remember the gamecube and the n64.
Lmao I am in the same situation as you
KoS: *My game dropped FPS when I’m in water*
Proof that every Copy of M64 is Truly Personalized
For someone who only has nostalgia for sunshine, this was really disappointing. I never expected a remake but I at least expected a good port with Gamecube controller support and some QoL updates.
Also the Mario 64 updates aren't new, it's a port of an updated version of the game that was only released in Japan in 1997
No camera control options killed it for me, really awful. I'm SO used to inverse camera from old games.
It's a port, why would you expect updates...? That's a you problem. Also sunshine is literally the same, the only thing changing are the analog buttons, that's it. If you think it's bad then maybe you don't really like sunshine
@@Mqstodon The inverted controls are not the same. Not even close. It just feels wrong. The random horrid lag that is Purely An Emulation Problem isn't the same either. The ports are lazy and made as a cash grab. I'm all for portable m64 and sunshine but this was incredibly low-effort.
Really my only complaint is 64 and Sunshine aren't 60fps. They could've easily done it, don't give me the "BUT THE PHYSICS" excuse. If the 64 PC port can do it and there's a 60fps hack for Sunshine on Dolphin, then no reason why Nintendo can't.
I mean really this is more for it being the original game rather than it being some hyped up remake.
@@bfcofficial17 making It 60 fps does not change the game at all but makes the animations smoother
And if we talking about the original experience using shindou Is a strange idea because It wont be the original experience for all of west
The mario sunshine demo shown at space world was running at 60 fps on the gamecube
The games, themselves, are amazing and iconic, but the collection, itself, could've been handled better.
Still hoping we get Galaxy 2 somewhere down the line.
The soundtracks for these games are amazing.
For your first video like this you did good and you make some very good points that I haven't heard any other person on CZcams. Good job overall.

I really like these types of videos. I hope you make more!
Great video! Loving the video essay style and more structured scripting you made!
I think the main problem a lot of people have is that this is part of a larger issue with Nintendo’s stance on their own history. They have what is arguably the richest, most well-rounded and complete gaming catalogue that exists, but they seem adamant about restricting access to it.
Even this collection reflects that philosophy; Sunshine has never been ported to anything beyond putting its Gamecube disc into a Wii. This is the first time many people have ever played it, and it is ONLY available as an emulation with minimal upscaling that is part of a $60 collector’s pack.
The games are amazing, and I don’t think anyone is arguing that they’re not. Getting three previously full-release games for $60 is not a horrid deal. But the lack of polish on the collection, both in terms of the emulation itself and UI design, is only a symptom of the larger problem. The games’ scarcity are artificial, and this collection even more so with it’s distressingly short purchase window.
At the end of the day, it’s absolutely Nintendo’s call to make - they made the games, they own the games, they can do what they want. But for a lot of fans who want to revisit old favorites or introduce others to them, it’s frustrating to see all these wondrous gems being utterly abandoned to the consoles of the past by their creators.
And this is why people "sail the high seas"
I bought it I like it. I won't claim it's a great collection or it's not lazy. But it's an accurate way to play these 3 games. Which was all I needed. Fuck that limited release tho

Honestly, my one singular complaint with this collection is the limited release bullshit. It is painfully anti-consumer and unnecessarily so. This game would have sold like hotcakes without the nonsense, so why give people something to complain about?
Limited release digital games is not a thing that should exist, period.

I honestly wouldn't mind seeing these type of videos in the future. Having you review games in this style is fine with me.
Even if I really miss your montages, I still liked to see a new video :)
Nope
Here's my two cents on 3DAS:
It's a perfectly okay way to play these games if you haven't before.
If you have these on original hardware or Virtual Console already, there's not much here for you. The only real substantial improvement is the resolution bump (and aspect ratio change for Sunshine). You're working with slightly gimped controls as well, since Sunshine's missing the analog triggers and Galaxy's missing the infrared pointer.
If you have Sunshine and Galaxy in Dolphin, and have a build of sm64ex (especially with Render96), you're not missing a thing.
Since Sunshine runs at 60 fps in Dolphin, it's probably better in that version.
There’s also the fact that the Sunshine game has emulation problems that have already been fixed in the Dolphin version. Just, somewhat bizarre that not a single person thought to ask the creators of Dolphin for help. You know Sega would have if they were using emulation to port a game.
Other note, the lack of infrared sensors on the joycons is fine, because the joycons don’t need any sensor bar to function like Wii Remotes.
Personally I’d say that even if you have played these before, the portability is a big part of the appeal.
@@creativebeetle Yeah I was a bit disappointed that Sunshine seems to run the worst out of the three games on Switch. It actually feels kinda choppy.
One thing though. Galaxy on Dolphin isn't a great experience. At least last I checked, there was no support for gyro controls, meaning some levels were literally impossible to beat, even if you had a Switch Pro controller.
@@NobbsAndVagene Dolphin actually got a DSU client last year, which lets you use the gyro in a DS4, Switch Pro, or Joy-Con for motion input in-game.
Even more recently, they added the ability to use real Wii Remotes in their controller mapper, which means that you can use MotionPlus to emulate the pointer so you don't really need a sensor bar.
Really nice video Brent, keep it up
Nice review, with your overall thoughts and opinions being pretty good and very little bias in this video being handled pretty great.
"I wouldn't call it a lazy cashgrab, rather as an opportunity to newer players to experience these games"
Yes, but the way they did it is literally just a lazy cashgrab, they knew they could get pretty much free money out of this with almost no effort solely because it's Mario
Especially since they gutted Virtual Console (Which did the exact same thing, except it was a service, not limited or publicized as something big) and overpriced these 3 games
It definitely is a lazy cashgrab and is pretty scummy in a lot of ways

Mario I think I'm bisexual
.........."BYE BI"
Mario is such a good guy.
Personally im skipping the collection because lack of galaxy 2. I played the shit outta sunshine and 64 back in the day and I dont feel like revisiting them for $40. Galaxy would be nice to olay but i cant justify paying $60 just to play it.
This was a great video, explaining everything bad and good, I love it all, thanks for the video, but the SM64 is actually the 1997 Shindou Version, that means everything you mentioned about it being different was normal.
I appreciate the review Brent!
So let me get this straight: your main complaint with Sunshine is that it changed the controls to be better optimized for the main controller that the system uses, and not what is at best a secondary controller for the system?
Okay then.
I think his complaint is that when the GameCube controller is used, it doesn’t use the original GameCube controls. The Switch controls are fine as is, but I’d imagine it would be pretty weird to use the GC controller here with the edited Switch controls.
Hot take: Gamecube's Sunshine controllers are infinitely better than Switch. With the R trigger you can control the water pressure.
I honestly think this game is worth it for people who never played these 3 games originally, but once you beat the game through the final boss or 100% there really isn't any reason to play the games again *and this is coming from someone who is playing the games for the first time*
Still does not excuse the lazy execution for a high price. Even the developers knew this was lazy when they renamed their placeholder models "lazy replacement"
Really ready for the Steve montage
Sunshine was the only one of the 3 I played as a kid, and I still loved in 3d all stars. What's great about this is I can play through the other 2 without a nostalgia filter, and so far they've been amazing and have been holding up to my expectations. Love 3d all stars tbh

A fellow Canadian? Well that deserves a sub!
As someone who had never played any of these games before, this collection gave me exactly what I was hoping for: a way to play these classics on a modern Nintendo console. Definitely worth it if you’ve never tried these games yet
It took me an hour and a half to beat the “pachinko level”. Why Nintendo? Why do you torture us so?
The funny thing is that this is my first time playing sunshine, and I beat the Pachinko level on my second attempt. Wired how that works...
Metal And Magic. I hate how people can achieve these acts of God like they’re child’s play. Good job, though 👍
Metal And Magic bro same!! People say it’s so hard and I played it for the first time and I beat it first try today
The platforming levels without fludd are way harder
Phantom. Yes, yes they are

I'll love to see more videos like that one
a king of skill video without many edits and memes
*somethings wrong*
For me, it's a great deal. Galaxy was part of my childhood, and I never got the chance to play 64 and sunshine. I know some people think it's just a lazy cashgrab, but don't care, still buying it.
Me too
If you have dolphin emulator, then no it's not worth it.
I feel the lack of memes disturbing.xcellent video man
I was half expecting to hear Introspective's "Deuces!" at the end lol
