  • A very strange evening spent at Hitchin station on the East Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from London Northeastern Railway, Govia Great Northern, Thameslink, Hull Trains and Grand Central.
    Hitchin station was built in 1850 as one of the original stations along the East Coast Mainline when the tracks were first layed. The same year saw Hitchin become a junction station when the a line to Royston was built and a year later was extended towards Shepreth. There was a line running from Hitchin to Bedford and for a while was running very successfully, but when the Midland Railway built a line from Bedford to London via Luton the Hitchin branch eventually became a branch line and was starting to lose money because passengers were taking the train from London St Pancras. Eventually the line was shut completely in 1961. The embankment is still there as it now carries a single stretch of track for trains that use the East Coast Mainline for Letchworth Garden City.
    The line was operated by the Great Northern Railway to start with before they became a part of the LNER, with the rest as they say is history. Before stevenage was opened Hitchin was served by Intercity services.
    When First Capital Connect operated services along the East Coast Mainline they installed new safety features at the station including new lighting, New CCTV camera's and automatic ticket barriers, this in turn gave the station a Secure Station Status.
    During most of this film nearly all of the services operated by the Govia company are running late or cancelled, and not a word is said to the customers waiting on the station who may need to catch connecting services up and down the line, it was downright disgraceful.
    The only highlight for this video being a LNER class 800 working a training run from York to Kings Cross.
    My next station is Banbury on the Chiltern Mainline.
    You can now find me on Facebook through the group Tornado922, there you will find regular updates, videos and photos from all of my goings on throughout 2018

    Great rant!
    As someone who has used Thameslink to commute to London and back during weekends or study breaks at Uni, I’m bloody glad it’s the summer and that I no longer have to use the service to commute on a regular basis for some time.
    However, I feel terribly sorry for the passengers and commuters who use it Monday to Friday for their whole lives just to make it to work on time. They do not deserve to be delayed for hours waiting in the scorching heat for a train to actually turn up and then to find out that they are either late for work or never make it to work.
    It’s all thanks to Govia for their disorganised approach to revolutionising commuter railway travel in and around London. They might as well be stripped off of their franchise if they can’t sort out this mess in the next week or so.
    If you’re gonna revolutionise such a major industry at least have a plan beforehand instead of leaving all the problems to be solved as soon as the new timetable has been implemented.
    Poor preparation prevents perfect performance!

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  Před 6 lety

      I just find it completely astonishing that Govia Thameslink Railway are happy with the services that they are providing on all 3 of their networks, you had the various strikes by Southern because of the role of the guards, then you have this complete mess of the timetable which as you quite rightly say should of been planned well in advance to avoid these costly errors

    Great video as always. Luckily I don't have to use trains to get to and from work but I do feel so sorry for the customers that have to depend on these sevices. Why the train companies had to mess around with the time tables I don't know. If it needed tweeking then fine, but to overhaul it completely without a test run was maddness. As the old saying goes "If it isn't broken, don't fix it."

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  Před 6 lety

      Thanks very much for saying so, I just find it astonishing that no real planning went into getting this timetable implemented. They just throw it together and expected it to run flawlessly. Now the full extent of the issues has been made public it's only a matter of time before the company folds in on itself

    It's not the timetable that is making thameslink run late or cancelled its the fact that with the new thameslink routes they didn't train up the drivers to drive them so they are training them so people should stop saying thameslink are crap because they are not as I've never had a problem with them so give them a break cause there are far worse companies out on the rail

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  Před 6 lety +2

      If that's the case then Thameslink are still to blame. If they knew that they were going to introduce these new routes then they would've had sufficient time to train to various drivers on the new routes be it on a simulator or physical route learning

    The GoVia timetable cock-up completely messed up my Spring Bank Holiday Monday! I was trying to get to Hitchin to be picked up by a friend who was taking me to the Wrest Park at War event in Silsoe, but the train I was supposed to be on (the 09:11 to Peterborough) was cancelled after about 15 minutes of waiting and there were no other Peterborough trains showing up on the board! I did no more than complained to the guys at Farringdon station where I was waiting. To be fair they were pretty good and gave me some alternative options (take the next train to St. Pancras and then take a Great Northern train from there to Hitchin), but I would have still been about 20 minutes late, which wasn't fair on my mate picking me up from Hitchin. So I decided to message him and say I wasn't going to make it, ask the guy in the ticket office for a refund and go home! At least the tube got me back home pretty quickly! Another route I suppose I could have taken was to get an LNER HST to Stevenage and change for the Thameslink train there, but looking at what's going in this video, it looks like the timetable crisis is kind of affecting them too! So, your video is absolutely spot on!

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  Před 6 lety

      It's just a complete farce, and going by what your experience was you would've spent more time travelling than you would've needed to. Plus you would've had the added pressure of getting off different trains to potentially miss the one you were aiming for if there was slight hold up at the following station. You only need a 30 second delay somewhere to completely knacker any plans you may of had. It's just a complete mess that they have gotten themselves into

  • @liftylu

    Very nice video and I get what you mean. They had really really mucked up the whole system and like you say, I had seen all of the tweets that they were getting. You could really really tell how harsh people were being towards them even though they weren’t the ones that were mainly involved. I think network rail should have also been accountable for all of this. The main thing is that all of these problems have been sorted and it is quite a reliable service now.

    @agent_605 Před 6 lety

    I’m not sure renationalisation would actually do much to prevent this, especially when you see what actually went on (as revealed by the Transport committee) with Network Rail changing a lot of their original timetable and were delayed in handing it over to the TOCs, giving much less time to plan for what was actually going to run, and the TOCs also asked for the Department for Transport to delay the timetable in the beginning of the year yet Failing Grayling pushed on with it and now we have the current mess. On a side note LNER aren’t brilliant with the amount of failed trains they’ve had since taking over the franchise

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  Před 6 lety

      Whilst I don't think renationalisation would be the case I feel that something needs to be done because things are just getting way out of hand now, and the TOC's haven't got any real answers for the thousands of commuters that are being affected by this on a daily basis, when you say LNER have had a large amount of 'failed' trains what do you mean by that? The trains themselves have developed faults or that they are being cancelled on a regular basis?

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 Před 6 lety

      Tornado922 From What I’ve seen they’ve had many train faults occurring over the last few weeks (more than I saw under VTEC) and they tended to be more serious requiring the train to be rescued rather than fixed on site

      @agent_605 Před 6 lety

    I have no real clue about what the issues are which have lead to the terrible service on offer today from Thameslink/Great Northern, but whatever the cause these providers need to have their contracts cancelled immediately. It would be better if there was no service at all rather than such random, hit or miss service. Creating a dependence upon public transportation services, as Great Britain has done (along with many other countries), requires that those who choose to attempt to provide the services can, indeed, perform and that those who allow such attempts be held 100% accountable. Unfortunately, most often they never are and I'm very sure that such will be the case here. Here in the western United States (I live in California) we have chosen, in very large measure, not to rely on public ground transportation because those who would attempt to provide and/or manage the services cannot and will not EVER live up to the responsibilities they assume. Airline service was the exception and every day it gets worse and worse as government increases (or decreases) the level of its "participation". As a result, it too, will fail. The truth of the matter is that whenever government meddles in what should be a competitive private enterprise the result is always the same: the public pays the price. Responsible regulation is a proper governmental role. Involving government in the provision of the service, is not, because it almost always reduces competition and it is competition which leads to first class service.

      It's just been a complete mess lately on the British Rail Network. We've had so many problems it starts to get beyond a joke. People are arriving late into work and missing connecting trains to other parts of the country because of the ineptitude of the railway companies themselves. They then lay on road transportation but that's even worse especially during the rush hour periods when there's far more traffic on the roads. In the States is appears as if your rail network runs without any major problems, although we wouldn't hear about it over here.

    • @plgpa
      @plgpa Před 6 lety

      The passenger rail systems here, such as they are and excluding the New England/New York/Washington DC corridor are pretty much a joke. The services run on privately owned rails and are always secondary to freight. Delays are the rule of the day. The US railroads gladly gave up passenger service many years ago in favor of freight which was simply more profitable. And, because of the long distances involved, air travel was always much quicker. In California, we've no embarked on building a super high speed rail system (ala the Japanese Shinkansen) that's supposed to run between Southern California and the SFO BAY Area. It's an ungodly expensive political boondoggle which, if ever completed, will cost far more to use than air travel and, if it makes any stops in between LA and SF will be so slow as to be useless.. Its doomed and will waste billions upon billions of taxpayer dollars for nothing. Don't get me wrong. I love railroads. But I despise governmental involvement in their operation. It never works well. I hope privatization of the British railroads works. I rode your trains when they were run by British Rail. It's an experience I hope never to have to repeat. And, with all it problems it appears to me that what you have now is far superior to that. Thanks for your wonderful, informative, humorous and on point videos!! Keep them coming as often as you can!!

    Don’t apologise to us saying lowering the tone of the video. I rather enjoyed it reason being because it’s all the truth. How on earth am I meant to get to college 3x a week?! Absolutely disgraceful Thameslink and Great Northern. It’s like one step forward and two steps back, they’re not getting anywhere. The staff is very rude and doesn’t take any criticism when the truth hurts. They need to sort it out, it’s been happening for ages now.

    To add to the costumers brunt, the new seats on the 700 are uncomfortable and when I rode on a class 700 to St. Alban's at up to 100mph (never reaching 100 [as I was using a speed GPS then] because of the next point I'll say!!), Are too damn jerky and bumpy as I could feel my self dancing into a window and bumping into the wall!! That is pathetic and even could cause a disaster because the train could derail!! Not trying to say desiro trains are shit, they are very good when done right like the 350s, Smooth and peaceful at 100mph (as I rode one at that speed between Watford Junction to Harrow & Wealdstone), class 444/450s which feels like a meditation room with relaxing AC in a train, the wheel sounds are at minimum level which is extremely impressive. Not to mention that they look very cute with the front Panda eye windows (except for the Abellio greater Anglia 360s). However Desiros are second place but not far from the best. The best ones are the BREL trains because they looked like they where designed by the Gods, the traction motors are legendary, especially the class 319s, 321s, 442s. And I got to tell you riding a 321 from Shenfield to Stratford at around 90mph was reminscent of a boy flying with a snowman!! (P.S look at how I have Changed the tone)

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  Před 4 lety +1

      Well atleast from when this was filmed things have greatly improved for the reliability of the trains running on the network. Just is a shame that the 700's are so uncomfortable to ride on. I haven't been on one as of yet for a decent length journey but from what everyone says they are very hard. I do like how you changed the tone there

      (I just hope trains go back to being great. In fact, it seems to be happening gradually I.e Hull Trains as in terms of livery, the new class 800s look beautiful and modern because it has the endangered barbie livery and a blue bodyshell which I like. Moreover I love the blue interior[coming from a guy whose favourite colour is blue] and the modern line seating pattern. From the way it looks, I'm in ♥ with Hull Trains. I just hope that Hitachi have improved the performance of trains back to class 395 standards and the seat is comfortable.)
