I grew up in the 70's & 80's - That was exactly how it was & still should be! THANK YOU for this song and your appreciation shows in your reaction! We each change the world one step at a time! As I recall only Prince and Madonna were unable to make it to this event - all the giants of the 80s were there, and checked their egos at the door ( man i wish we could have seen MJ and Prince together here) but still this event symbolized the optimism of the 1980s. The song itself raised a huge amount of money for the relief efforts which saved many lives in Ethiopia during the famine. One of the survivors is now 50 and made this remark after Micheal Jackson passed:
I won't ever forget Michael Jackson because his contribution to the song We are the World had a very significant effect on my life. I am 50 now but 25 years ago I was living in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which at that time was suffering from a long drought and famine. It was a terrible situation. Lots of people became sick and many more died. Around one million people in all were killed by the famine. In 1984 Michael Jackson, along with a number of other leading musicians, made the song We are the World to raise money for Africa. We received a lot of aid from the world and I was one of those who directly benefitted from it. The wheat flour that was distributed to the famine victims was different to the usual cereal we bought at the market. We baked a special bread from it. The local people named the bread after the great artist and it became known as Michael Bread. It was soft and delicious. When you have been through such hard times you never forget events like this. If you speak to anyone who was in Addis Ababa at that time they will all know what Michael Bread is and I know I will remember it for the rest of my life

Today- March 4, 2023 as I write this. I believe it's the 30 year anniversary of Jimmy Valvano's epic speech at the ESPYs....everybody should watch....extremely inspiring. But in it he says that we should all spend time in thought everyday, laugh everyday and have our emotions move us to tears everyday.

Bruce Springsteen had one of the biggest records in the country during this. From what I’ve heard, he drove his own truck there while most of the others were dropped off in limos. When he got there, some of the rock guys were going to leave as they thought the song was too pop and might hurt their image. Bruce said I’m here to feed people. Freaking amazing

“We Are the World" opens with Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner, and Billy Joel singing the first verse. Michael Jackson and Diana Ross follow, completing the first chorus together. Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, and Al Jarreau sing the second verse, before Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry, and Daryl Hall go through the second chorus. Co-writer Jackson, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, and Kim Carnes follow with the song's bridge. This structuring of the song is said to "create a sense of continuous surprise and emotional buildup". "We Are the World" concludes with Bob Dylan and Ray Charles singing a full chorus, Wonder and Springsteen duetting, and ad libs from Charles and Ingram.

This song came out in 1985, and I’m 17 and I’ve heard the song a few times in my life, it is iconic, but just recently I’ve seen the music video, all in one take, the talent in that room to bring unity to everyone is something that I believe can never be matched, nowadays people really are separated, and a lot of modern singers don’t have nearly the natural vocals like literally anyone who participated in the original recording, wish we had more of this in our world

Just 15 or 20 years prior.....a collaboration of artists like this wouldn't have come close to being recorded together. We were starting to make progress in racial acceptance and relations at the time. Motown played a big part in that by producing a plethora of super talented black artists that were changing the hearts and minds of people both young and old through their music. Things were far from perfect...... but they were improving and music played a very big role in breaking down barriers. Make no mistake..... America as a whole was very moved and very proud of this unlikely gathering of its own ethnic blend of artists.
My personal favorites in the song are the two blind men. They both move me to tears.

You also MUST see the documentary about the making of this song. You also have to see the song that came first: "Do They Know It's Christmas." It was a bunch of British pop and rock stars you may not know, but a year before "We Are The World", they came together to do a charity video for a time when famine had hit parts of Africa HARD. When Lionel Ritchie saw this, he knew that American stars needed to do something like that, so he, MJ and Quincy Jones teamed up, and the result was this video.

I am a baby boomer. 35 years later, I still tear up listening to your reaction of this magnificent song. As much as we cherish the artists and their music in this video, especially the ones who are no longer with us, let us not lose sight of the reason Micheal Jackson and Lionel Ritchie wrote this song. They wrote this song in response to a catastrophe that happened in Ethiopia where a perfect storm of drought, failed harvest, food scarcity and economic collapse caused an estimated 1.2 million people to die of hunger. All of these beautiful artists came together to raise money for food aid for Africa, which is why the name of the project is called USA for Africa. I think on this day my faith in humanity was restored. Quincy Jones who brought everyone together, wrote a sign above the studio entrance that said "Leave your ego at the door". We are the world raised 63 million dollars for food aid for starving people. I remember how unbearable it was watching it being reported. I am forever grateful to all of the artists and Micheal and Lionel for giving me an opportunity to buy the CD and providing me an opportunity to contribute to this worthy cause. So yes, even though I am an old fart from different generation in my sixties, I am so happy that your generation will keep this song alive, as I weep through all I of the reactions that I will review.
