  • After months of thinking about what to put up, I finally got my first video for the channel and with it being the start of the new year, I figured why not mix it in with a new hobby project as well.
This isn't a step-by-step how-to paint but a general overview of my painting process for the amazing Mongol sculpts from Pendraken. The aim is to get these up to a decent standard in a reasonable time for playing mass battles.

I forgot to mention, I did download an older and I think out of print Osprey book on Mongols and it helps to some degree with colours.

Really nice work on these, they look great! Sorry about the 40mm bases being out of stock too, I'm not sure why someone didn't just laser those up while you were in the shop!

I didn't actually think to ask when I was there tbh, it was over christmas/new year I popped in though so I don't know if anyone was in to. But it's okay I've since stocked up on plenty to see me through.

Try searching for Ilkhanate paintings, they produced paintings in Persian style that might be helpful

I was quite impressed with the rate at which you completed them. I am hung up on colours myself on 15mm Mongols. What scale of figures to actual men are you using? I ask because if I use too big a scale, the army they will be fighting wont be represented by more than half a dozen figures, given the size of Mongol attacks.

Thanks, yeah I was quite impressed myself. I painted these off while I had some time off work though and some plans fell through so I basically just had a week of nothing to do but paint. Safe to say my rate has slowed a fair bit since.
Colours are definitely a problem there doesn't seem to be much good resources on them, I know Osprey are coming out with a book on the Mongols that looks really useful but it isn't due to release until March I believe, and that was a little to long for me to wait haha.
These are in 10mm scale, I chose it as when scaling 28mm figures from inches scale to centimetres it would out to about 11mm so 10 was the closest I could get. I did consider 15mm myself but I was struggling to find other nations that fit the early 13th century I'm going for. There was a few really nice ones that I found for 15mm based in USA and then a few in the UK, since I'm UK based myself it made the most sense for avoiding import tax and long delivery times.

@@TabletopSagas-mg7zb Lol, I'm doing a fantasy thing. Some muppet posted that the Mongols would annihilate a USMC Regiment because they would break and be chased down. But he took all the equipment away from them and left them only with their AR15 assault rifles. So I am going to game it based on the premise that the Marines are out of place, they don't have armour, airpower or heavy artillery. However they will have section MG's, Coy MG's and Reg MG's, plus mortars, the heavy weapons support Coy and snipers. Plus of course the standard kit out for a USMC squad. Laser sighting, hand held drones for reccy, snipers, body armour which given its properties is more than capable of defeating arrows, and combined with 18" shell scrapings would be more than sufficient protection.
The Mongol force size is to be a Tumen, 10,000 Mongols, capable of their biggest attack units, five waves of a thousand men. I believe a USMC Regt can be up to 1400 men with all the ancillaries. But the Mongols would be able to put two massive charges in from two directions. Oh, I forgot claymores. Given how Omdurman turned out in a very similar set up I just can't see the Mongols be successful, especially as they were not stupid and knew when to withdraw.

Sounds like an interesting one to play out, not sure where you'd find a system that even closely represents the difference in firepower of a modern rifle compared to a bow.
Id have to agree with you seems unlikely the mongols would fair well, even if the USMC only had their rifles, the efficiency of modern firearms is terrifying compared to any that came before it, like the bow.
