Keep Your Bow From Bouncing

- Does your bow bounce when you don't want it to? These 4 tips can help you achieve a smoother more desirable bowing technique.
1) pulling the bow rather than pushing it - with flexible fingers. • Finger Flexibility for...
2) Keeping the instrument a little higher, even if it's only an inch.
3) Turning the bow inwards slightly for more of a shock absorber effect.
4) loosening the bow.
In the same way you paint with a standard brush, you want to pull the hair behind. Let the bow follow your hand. Practice bringing your fingers inward and outwards for more finger flexibility.
The higher the instrument, the less you need to stretch your hand to play in the same spot on the bow. Even if you learn to keep your instrument just one inch higher, you'll have slightly less tension in your hand. This is tension that can cause your hand to tremble and the bow to bounce.
While it's not always suitable to play with the bow turned inwards, it's very suitable when playing softly which is one of the times that we bounce the most. Turning the bow inwards creates a shock absorber by creating less tension at the first edge and more as the hair bunches up. There are many degrees of turning the bow based on what you are playing. Experiment to find the perfect angles for what you are playing.
Lastly, experiment with bow tension. If you are not playing so hard that you feel the stick grinding against the strings in the middle of the bow, you shouldn't have any problem loosening the bow. Depending on the strength and stiffness of your stick, you could probably loosen the hair quite a bit without any negative effects.

@@b1na276 You have the hardest part down. Take a look at how you hold the bow when you play an up bow to see if you can drag your fingers behind the bow so to absorb shocks. Good luck!

First off let me say how much I enjoy your videos you're not long-winded like some of the other video tutorials on learning the violin and that's very good. I'm just going to start off by saying I'm 37 years old and I've always loved the violin. when I was a kid there was no such thing as a cheap violin that was worth playing so my parents never got me one. now that I'm grown and getting older I want to learn how to play the violin my youngest son is 11 years old he's the youngest of four and they all have their things that they like to do and their Hobbies. and yes I decorate cakes for people I crochet and I cook clean and do other housewife duties. I looked at some of your reviews on the Cecilio violins I bought one of each for myself it took me several days to get them too but I'm pretty smart girl so I figured out. but my frustration comes to where I don't know where to start I'm trying right now to learn not to let the bow more than one string at a time I'm trying to learn the positions of the bow. as a single mom of 4 kids one of which is in college I don't have the money for lessons so I'm really trying to teach myself. I know this is long and drawn-out but I need to know where to start then I can write you again and you can tell me the next step I like your tutorial videos but none of them tell me where to start I know it's going to take me several years to learn how to play and that's okay with me because I don't have anything else to do but you know cook and clean and in between I watch TV and that's getting boring I want to be able to pick up a violin and play it something beautiful I've always loved the sound. my father sings and plays the guitar my brother sings and plays the harmonica my sister sings my mother sings My Daughter sings but I have music in my soul it just won't come out of my mouth correctly. I want to play the violin please help me. I also want to add I've had several people tell me that if I don't start learning to play the violin at age 5 or 6 or 7 that I'm never going to learn it is that true?

Though, I still wonder. Is the violin case that comes with the Artist outfit durable for constant travel? I go to school at UTA and plan to use as much of my free time as I can to practice.

Most of my students had the same problem but was gone once they learn to let the weight of there arm drop on to the strings instead of lift the weight as most students do. I've the same problem when performing (even with good technique) but because my neck and back were a bit out of place (whiplash..etc.) pretty much gone now.

Thank you for the tips! I picked up the violin again after 10 years of not playing and noticed I got some bouncing in the bow. I didn’t know if I lost all my technique or if just not used to the bow. I also play the viola and bouncing is not an issue on the viola. I don’t know why this is haha
Probably because the strings are not as tense on the viola. The longer length and lower notes account for that. Try also loosening your bow when you play the violin.

I figured out the less tension on the hair/stick.

Sorry that I keep asking so many questions. But I've find no answer for this one. When you're going to play the D or A string alone it doesn't seem possible. The G and E string are possible to play alone, with a little bending on your wrist, but is it possible to play the D/A string alone?

Turning the bow at the top end of the stroke helped! The rest is up to just practicing bowing 10000 hours.

This isn't related to the video. I'm new to the violin and play in front of my chromatic tuner. It's taking some work to get and keep my fingers in the correct place on the finger board. Should I put tape on the finger board or just keep doing it this way?
If you can do it for a short period and not rely too much on it for accuracy, I can't see any harm in using the guides for a month or so. You'll need to force yourself to remove them ASAP afterwards though.:)
Aslan Judah I have been playing for 3 years and still don't put my fingers in the right place every time but the best thing to do is learn what I tune sounds like and then imagine that sound before you place your finger(s) down it works about 85% of the time

+Jojje Shitbricks Truthfully, there is no difference. Some people will tell you that a fiddle has a flatter bridge for playing double stops but that is not true. A flat bridge doesn't make it easier. As a matter of a fact, a flat bridge makes it harder to play just one note without hitting others. Double stops are two notes played at once which on the violin means two strings at once which is the same regardless of the curve.
The other difference is that you can spill beer on a fiddle. ;)
More fiddlers use steel strings than do classical violinists. Not saying that the majority prefer steel strings just that it is rare that a classical violinist uses steel core strings.

Do you have any videos that explains how to have a better fast staccato? for example my school is playing Tchaikovsky's serenade for stings but the staccato is way to fast for me.

I have a silly problem every time im playing my violin and not watching the movement of my bow (when i close my eyes or when my eyes are on the music sheets) My bow would end up at the bridge unintentionally or I might be hitting the wrong string, what do you think is the best solution to my problem? How do you overcome this problem? Playing violin while eyes on music sheet without hitting the wrong string or producing a squeaky sound.

+Rumi R The best solution is to practice tracking the bow. If you bow at one angle/opposite angle in the opposite direction, you steer the bow away from the bridge. Down bow with your tip angling away from your body and up bow with your tip angling towards your body.

+Fiddlerman Thanks so much for that It did help. I got better over the last few day. I can do the motion w/o the bow. I feel the bow is too heavy for my fingers AND it keeps shifting from one string to another when I simulate the paint brush effect

Thank you for the video since I also play my violin without shoulder rest as I've a very thick and short neck. I seem to have trouble playing B note on E string as I seem to be making screechy sound can you also make a video on that. :)

What do I do when the bow still bounces after doing all of this? Even my instructor doesn't know. She just keeps saying, "It'll come with time. Just practice." Practice what, exactly? Bowing all wrong, so I can reinforce bad bowing habits in my brain? I've never felt so frustrated with the violin before. I used to love practicing, and now I dread it.
Analyze your right arm as well. Is it heavy, is it tense, is it too high, too low? Try different ways of holding your arm. Practice drawing bows just above the strings without making contact to see if you can gain any type of control. Believe in yourself. Good luck! I have confidence that you'll figure it out. Be your own teacher for a while. You can do it.
@@1stfiddlerman I think the elbow height was the trick! I tried holding it just a bit higher, and what a difference! Still far from perfect, but what a difference! Who knew it could be so simple? I can't thank you enough!

I would need to see a video or something. When you draw the bow from the frog, have your fingers follow the stick similar to a paint brush.

Wait aren't you supposed to play on the flat of the bow hair? idk I was told that it produces more sound.
PhazonArcanine4 no actually tilting the bow towards the finger board produces more sound and tilting it towards the bridge produces less sound good for piano
More pressure and closer to the bridge produces more sound. If you press more, the hair will be flat no matter how much angle you have. :)
The main reason why my bow bounces is because I have too much tension in my arm muscles and my hand is too stiff trying to counterbalance the bouncing, which produces the opposite effect.
So turning the bow to the side a bit might help. Give that a shot.

My bow bounces only when I vibrate. It's like the violin is not steady enough when I'm doing vibrato, I think that my bowing is not the problem, the vibrato is. Any tips?
Even though it's not the bowing which is the problem, the bowing hand is not flexible enough to absorb shocks and movements. You can probably dampen the left hand counter productive movement by trying to vibrate as much forward and back as possible but if you work on your right hand finger flexibility, so that your right hand becomes a shock absorber, you'll notice a huge difference.
