NARROWBOAT Living - CHASED along the towpath … Does he want US?! Ep90

  • In this week’s vlog, we cruise our NARROWBOAT floating home from Crick Wharf at bridge 12, through to just before the Braunston Tunnel! The tunnel is so wet, my camera gets soaked! We see how a butty boat is taken through locks without an engine and we work the Watford Locks on our own, without the volunteer lockies!! We get diesel and a pumpout at a lovely marina, then try to carry on up to Norton Junction ….. however, watch, to find out why we end up going back the way we came! After a ‘noisy’ night, we wind the boat and cruise back past the marina and turn right at Norton Junction. Martin starts to prepare for his nemesis Braunston Tunnel and takes a quick look break. On his way back to the helm, Martin notices someone running …. is he after us? Keep watching to find out!

If you’re new to our channel, just a little introduction. We are Julie and Martin and in 2021 we sold our house and gave up our jobs, to live full time on a narrowboat. We bought our 2004 narrowboat Rhapsody in Blue in the September and have been living full time onboard ever since. We hadn’t intended on vlogging, but recorded videos for ourselves and family and it has escalated into the weekly vlogs you see today, so lovely to have you all onboard! ❤️
Please join us as we continuously cruise the inland waterways of the UK, sharing our cruises and adventures with you all, thank you! ❤️
We’ve made a couple of playlists for you too, one with all our favourite cruises and the other is all of our vlogs from the beginning, so you can binge watch to see where we’ve been so far! There’s also a walk through of our narrowboat home too, come inside and see how we live. ❤️

Please, stop using the word "literally", it's incredibly annoying and makes you sound like a 2010 teenager.

@@markjones1337Thanks for your feedback Mark, I didn’t realise I did that on our videos, or that it could be annoying. I used to get ribbed at work that I always said literally, it’s one of those words, I’ll try and be more aware of it. However, being compared to a 2010 teenager, I’ll take that as a compliment lol 😜 Thanks Mark xx

The SRN-4 hovercraft which operated on the Dover to Calais and Boulogne crossing an the Pegwell Bay to France had a design life of ten years but were kept going long beyond that thanks to the dedication of the engineering staff. Long after the marine Proteus engines became obsolete, the company was buying anything which used that engine for spare parts. The former hovercraft terminal at Pegwell Bay became a breaker’s yard after Hoverlloyd and Seaspeed merged to form Hoverspeed.

Don't forget some people have to live on a marina because their health niggles force it . Sometimes they are on their own or new to the life . Once you get to a certain age the locks may prove too great a challenge. But it's a nice community on a lock and travelling days out may need to be by car . I love your videos xx

Hi Angie, yes of course, you’ll remember us saying in a previous video, that when the time comes that we are unable to work the locks and swing bridges, that we will look for a garden mooring, or a marina mooring, as we just love living on the water! We also really enjoyed our time in the marina and have many friends still there. For the time being though, we are enjoying roaming around the waterways and seeing new places, views and people! Thank you so much Angie! xx

After I'd left school ( early 90's ) I worked on 2 narrow boats one had the motor the other which I was usually stirring was the butty ( not sure if that's the correct spelling ), which were both done up for about 10 guests and 4 crew
It was basically a floating sorta holiday hotel, people either came for just the weekend or a week or two, we started up in the NW and followed the canals down to Oxford and got onto to the Oxford river, I can't remember how far down south they got but they got so far and turn around, but I didn't make it that far as the owners of the narrow boats 2 of the crew, were not very nice people and were quite aggressive to my friend and myself ( the other 2 crew ) as I said I was only 17 and she was only 19 ( i think, about that )
I loved living on the narrow boats, I loved waking up at like 6 ish in the morning to see the mist hang low over the canal and that and all wildlife I used to see, you'd have knigfisher's following the barge's through their patch's to go after all the little fish the barges had stirred up, and I loved sitting in front of the wood burning stove on a chilly evening as I sat and crocheted or read my books, it really was a fantastic way to live and I would have stayed that full term and probably looked for other barge/narrow boat jobs, had the owners that were also crew not been so nasty and bad tempered
I must say I'm so jealous of the way you live and of your beautiful narrow barge ❤
Mind you it's hardly surprising I love that way of life, it's cause it's mainly traveling through and staying in the countryside and I grew up in a tiny village more or less in the middle of nowhere
Maybe if I still lived in the middle of nowhere I'd be able to leave my house/home, but I now live in a horrid smelly city were people just aren't nice to each other like they are in smaller towns and villages
Anyway it's a fantastic way to live and I'd give almost anything to be able to live that way again
Thank you for sharing your amazing lifestyle and beautiful home ❤❤

@@JulieandMartinonRIB You go like the clappers compared to the wooden boat pair I worked with. Lilith (the butty) was a 'joey' built in 1901, both ends are 'pointy' so instead of winding them you could just take the tiller and rudder off and pop it on the other end! 71ft and some change. To steer takes some muscle (huge wooden rudder) and you have to be watching what the person driving the motor does... and they are approx 75/80ft ahead of you! Liliths motor was usually Forget-Me-Knot, former horse drawn, 1927 built wooden boat, now motor, also 71ft! So you have to really be watching where the front of the motor is going.. then calculate for whats going to happen over 140ft away about 5 minutes later, it's a VERY different beast indeed. Both still 'live' outside the museum in Ashton-under-Lyne if you're ever that way!

How do you know that it is safe to pass through a tunnel like that? Is there way to be sure that there isn't another boat coming through in the other direction at the same time?

    • @JulieandMartinonRIB
      @JulieandMartinonRIB  Před 3 měsíci +1

Hiya! Thank you for your comment. If the tunnel is a two-way tunnel like this one, then you know you can pass another boat. In previous videos you will see us passing other boats, we will be going back through this tunnel soon, so if we pass a boat, or boats, then I’ll make sure I film it so you can see. It is quite close, just inches either side, but so long as you go slowly, then it is fine. Sometimes you can see through the tunnel and if there’s a boat coming, you can choose to wait until they are out, but as soon as you’re in the tunnel, another boat can come in at any time. On single tunnels, one-way, then they usually have timed passage, so that you know there won’t be a boat coming. Hope this makes sense! Thanks! xx

Can I ask a question about right of way, Before you entered the 1400m tunnel how do you know there's not a boat coming the other way, you can tell from the question I know nothing about Narrow Boating but it does look to be a nice life.

Hi John, with this particular tunnel, it is a two-way tunnel, s no need to wait. Boats can pass, it is quite snug, but you just slow down and pass each other slowly. When there is a tunnel that is one way, single file, then they usually have a timed passage, ie boss travelling south go on the hour and boats travelling north go on the half hour, or depending on the length of the tunnel some are manned with CRT volunteers. Hope that makes sense! Thanks John, lovely to have you with us! xx

Hi there, we don’t intend to get a dog, we have lots of friends who do have dogs, but we’ve chosen not to. Thanks! xx

Hi Donna, thank you, I bought the hat at the Crick boat show a couple of years ago. Not sure what kind it is, but the make is Eureka Stockade, hope that helps. Thanks Donna! xx

I notice the hats but what happens if you get a gust of wind and no chin straps being used.

Hi Les, we have to keep our wits about us if it’s windy! There was one time when Martin’s hat did blow off into the canal, but luckily he managed to retrieve it! Thanks Les! xx
