4K Walking Tour | An Italian medieval town reborn by love and artists

According to historical and archaeological sources, the area on which today's old Calcata stands was already an important center in the Etruscan and Falisca age. The village stands on a tufaceous rock overlooking the Treja valley, which takes its name from the homonymous stream from which it crosses and which is characterized by very dense and luxuriant vegetation. The beginning of Roman domination in this area (4th century), favored by the proverbial fertility of the territory, led to the settlement of numerous agricultural villas and farms, perhaps, in etymological terms, at the origin of the name of the village itself. As evidence of its ancient agricultural vocation, the name of Calcata appears for the first time in an official document dating back to the end of the eighth century AD, under the pontificate of Hadrian I (772-795). In one of the Pope's "Domuscultae" (papal estates intended to guarantee the supply of Rome) there was a "fundus" called Calcata. In the 1930s the town was almost completely abandoned due to the danger of landslides. An abandonment began that lasted until the 1960s when several artists and hippies, attracted by the evocative beauty of the place, elected Calcata as their "buen retiro". Gradually returning to new life, the village is today one of the best known near Rome boasting thousands of visitors every year.
