  • A man meets a stranger at lunch.
PUNCH-DRUNK is used with permission from Larry Ketang and Liam White. Learn more at falsetoothfilm....
A man named Colin sits at a crowded cafe in Marseilles, France, reading and having a coffee. He's minding his own business when he's joined by a stranger, a man named George who's an English speaker like himself.
The two begin a casual chat, both bonding over being Irish men in a foreign country -- they even are familiar with George's small hometown. But as the conversation proceeds and they find seemingly common ground, the talk takes an uneasy turn as Colin finds his life knocked off its axis.
Directed by Larry Ketang and Liam White from a script written by White, this gripping short drama has an extraordinarily simple execution. Its narrative scope is confined to a single conversation between two people in one location. Its camera setup is an elegantly composed, luminously lit single static closeup shot of Colin, held for almost the entire duration of the film.
But the minimalistic visual approach brings the preeminently skillful writing of the narrative to the fore, complete with well-paced rhythms that feel authentic and natural and an ear for subtext that proves pivotal as the story progresses. And what a narrative it turns out to be, as the conversation unfolds between Colin and George, and layers of detail unfurl.
George's story is a tragic one, told by actor Corin Silva in a mostly unseen performance that becomes increasingly powerful as the film proceeds. But the crux of the film's hypnotic power rests in actor Barry Ward's nuanced performance as Colin. The camera lingers on him for almost the entire length of his conversation with George, and Colin's reactions and dawning realization slowly build the suspense, especially as George's storytelling takes an insinuating, sly turn.
Impeccably controlled and beautifully performed, PUNCH-DRUNK -- which was longlisted for the BAFTA for best short film -- ends with a seemingly casual, conventional note of leave-taking. But under the surface is a sinister, ominous wallop, made all the more potent because of what is unsaid by both George and Colin. Implication is a weapon here, both in story and style, and it makes for a quietly riveting film that slowly reels in the viewer with increasing tension, only to be released into a disquieting conclusion. What happens next is left to the imagination, for Colin and the viewer -- and it's an uneasy, unsettling prospect for both.

We don't know either way if he really knew or not. But based on Collins reaction (obvious shock) when he finds out that she was pregnant and the baby died, I would trust that he genuinely didn't know. So to hold him responsible for it seems rather ridiculous in that context. Keep in mind also that George would have been a small child when it all happened so his understanding of the complexity of the situation and who knew what would have been rather limited - Obviously he took on some of his father's anger and carried it around with him for years - it made him bitter and vengeful toward someone he didn't even know. My hypothesis is that since they thought Paul was the father for years, that means the diary wasn't found/checked till years later after Lucy's suicide. And George said they can't ask Paul about who the father is because what happened to Paul
...so there is a possibility that their father killed Paul before George read Lucy's diary, and why it took so long for George to find Colin is because there was some years that the family thought they already killed the Lucy's love interest Paul until George who didn't believe it was Paul found and read the diary.

I had a friend who was a recovering drug addict. Tragically, she had a lapse and overdosed. Due to the circumstances, we never knew if it was intentional or not.
She was a sweet person in many ways... Innocent in many ways. However, her lack of impulse control meant she often got on people's nerves.
A friend said to me, it was peculiar how people had it so backwards. Before her death, they would blame her for their reaction to her behaviour. After her death, they would blame themselves for her actions.
Ultimately, suicide is the decision of one person.

    "Actions have consequences, don't they?"
Yes, and the actions by BOTH Colin AND Lucy had the consequence of a pregnancy. They are both responsible for that. But he's not looking to punish Colin for the pregnancy. Colin is not responsible for what George he is looking to punish him for. Or if he is, only partially and only indirectly.
More likely, Lucy's crappy family environment is more responsible for her death than Colin's detachment from her. If she had had a family that loved her properly and offered a healthy acceptance of her in the difficult situation, she would not have committed suicide.

We shouldn't judge our cultural norms and family values on others. I can see Lucy's dilemma and her family's perfectly, likely devout generational Catholics where slips up are hidden by couples getting married. Abortion wasn't a legal in Ireland either until 2018. Lots of deep shame from an unwed pregnancy, one could even get excommunicated from the church. Fathers might indeed show their love by killing a suitor who knocked up and abandoned a daughter. Unlike the US and many Western countries, we have an "anything goes" society where there are hardly any sexual boundaries.
