Hand-welted Shoes: Sole Edge Maintenance with Anders Sundstrom

  • As Mr. Anders Sundstrom (Swedish Shoeshining Champion) explains, the sole edge is often a neglected part of the shoe, which can let down the appearance of an otherwise good shoe. The reason for this is often because no specific product is available to the enthusiast for the caring of the sole edge. Shoemakers have access to a hot sole edge iron, whilst ordinary enthusiasts do not.
The Paul Brunngard group has developed a new tool, composed of solid walnut to help re-address the sole edge. Paired with the right creams, the sole edge can be restored to its original condition.

If only I could buy your products. Listened to you on the Gentlemen’s Gazette and was impressed. After a search I couldn’t find anyone to buy off. I’m in Australia and feel left out.

Glad to have my own sole edge iron from Arterton London now. I used it once and the result is great! I can absolutly recommend it!
One question: I used it for black sole edges. Now, I of course have black residues on the sole edge iron. When using it next time for example for a light brown sole, won't the black residues change the colour of the sole? How can I remove those black residues from the sole edge iron?
With the hand and/or an old shirt, it works for perhaps 50% of the residues. :D
Thanks again for your products and well done videos

I wear leather sole Chelsea boots with leather soles. I was taught that when I polished my shoes to polish the sole as well as it helps to water proof.

When it comes to the sole, just polish the sole edge and the sides of your sole. For the sole of your shoes (I mean the part, where you are walking on) use sole oil. Just thin layers of sole oil help to nourish your sole and protect it against bad weather conditions. Just do it once or twice per year and don't flood your sole in sole oil. Otherwise the oil can go through the sole into the upperleather and there you will never get it out again.
Wax on your sole on the other hand can be dangerous while walking on slippery grounds. :D
      Hopefully, that helps you.

What is the sole edge? The sole edge is the edge of the sole. Thanks!
