This movie is generally accepted to be quite accurate as far as movies go. Obviously none are perfect. I haven't yet seen it, but from what I've heard and seen of it, I'd like to. Keep in mind the caption the uploader put on this video is indeed incorrect. This tank appears to be a late-war French design, certainly not the first tanks to be used in combat, as anyone knows. It was actually very common to rapid fire at enemy tanks even with small caliber rifles, although the possibility for doing damage was minimal it still had a great effect on the tank crew as the loud noise irritates and small metal pieces flew through the interior damaging equipment and crew. So it was not meant to penetrate the front armor, but to damage the guns, lenses and tracks of the tank.
@@AureliusOstard-rg6mqearly K bullets were effective against the earlier armor and using armor piercing bullets later developed for the machine guns helped when concentrating on a singular tank
Funnily enough, one of the first anti-tank rounds developed in WWI consisted of taking a standard rifle cartridge, and flipping the bullet around. Apparently smacking into the plate backside first helped it smash through.
@@neilkurzman4907 depends on the velocity of the bullet (a typical rifle caliber bullet traveling at subsonic speeds would probably be more aerodynamic going backwards) but generally, assuming you’re using the same powder charge, pretty bad. If you've watched the movie, they were indeed awestruck at the sight of those tanks but what they were more concerned about was hundreds of infantry following behind those tanks.
This is a real story : Translated into English from a biography of a german soldier's book : _September 15, 1916_ _This morning, we heard a dull and regular noise that came from no man's land. We thought it was the enemy artillery that was preparing to fire, but we did not see any projectiles whistling over our heads. We looked through the loopholes of our trenches, and we saw strange shapes that moved slowly towards us. They looked like iron boxes mounted on tracks, with cannons and machine guns that came out of all sides. We had never seen such war machines. We thought they were monsters sent by the devil to annihilate us._ _We opened fire with our rifles and machine guns, but the bullets bounced off the armor of the tanks without stopping them. Some were hit by our shells or were blocked by obstacles, but others continued their inexorable progress. They crossed our barbed wire as if nothing had happened, and reached our lines. They fired on our positions with incredible violence, wreaking havoc among our comrades. Some tried to flee, but they were mowed down by the machine guns. Others tried to defend themselves in hand-to-hand combat, but they were crushed under the tracks or pierced by the bayonets of the English infantrymen who followed the tanks._ _I was lucky enough to survive this massacre, by hiding in a shell hole. I saw a tank pass a few meters from me. It was painted brown and bore the number 705. It had a red cross on the side, which meant it was carrying wounded. It was escorted by two English soldiers who looked at me with contempt. I felt powerless and humiliated. I wondered how we could resist this new weapon that seemed invincible. I wondered if the war was lost for us..._
Imagine being the first enemy trooper to encounter this unknown fortress . Would've rumbled from a mile away.. shook the ground when closing.. insanely terrifying. Like trexes just entered war
There's also an og one too! I can honestly without any ego or bias the remake is 10x better than the og and the og one is pretty good too! 👍 👌 you're all very welcome! By the way, thank you for all the likes as well!
It was even worse in WW2. Everything the allies thought they knew about armored warfare the Germans would just stampede right over them or make them suffer for every step they took towards them, there's documentaries about Sherman crew members hearing the Panthers high velocity rounds and then surviving penetration with the round ripping right out the other side completely and clean. And the real time PTSD Churchill and Stuart tankers had when going over a hill and seeing a tiger 1 for the first time reporting on the battlefield and seeing it sit there and just casually claim the lives of everything it's gun looked at. Tanks are no joke even if our anti tank tactics have evolved.

Also they're in a recently captured French trench, which explains the relative abundance of food compared to what would have been expected to be seen in the average German or Austro-Hungarian trench by that point in the war, at least in my mind.

Or as well the first time flamethrowers, toxic gas and landmines were used on the battlefield. Just the actual war on the battlefield made WW1 the worst that ever happened to soldiers. Of course every war is horrible but the amount of terror the soldiers had to feel was different that time.
It must have been teriffying. It is told that the most of the German Soldiers just gave up and ran away in fear as the tanks were approaching. Only few tried to fight them off with grenades.

The soldiers in WW1 mutve really felt like it was the end of the world due to the amount of technological advancements... Fighter planes, tanks.. the war literally went from horses/muskets to modern war with machine guns, tanks and planes.

Impenetrable
Imagine, tanks are coming and you are shooting with the guns in your hand.
@@chamberlane2899
What are the aerodynamics of a backwards bullet?
@@neilkurzman4907 depends on the velocity of the bullet (a typical rifle caliber bullet traveling at subsonic speeds would probably be more aerodynamic going backwards) but generally, assuming you’re using the same powder charge, pretty bad. This was not something you’d be using at any serious distance, and was more a stop gap solution while more dedicated anti-armor weapons/ammunition could be developed.

This is a real story :
Translated into English from a biography of a german soldier's book :
_September 15, 1916_
_This morning, we heard a dull and regular noise that came from no man's land. We thought they were monsters sent by the devil to annihilate us._
_We opened fire with our rifles and machine guns, but the bullets bounced off the armor of the tanks without stopping them. Others tried to defend themselves in hand-to-hand combat, but they were crushed under the tracks or pierced by the bayonets of the English infantrymen who followed the tanks._
_I was lucky enough to survive this massacre, by hiding in a shell hole.

First use of the tank was in the Somme in 1916. Not sure about the time in the movie - have read the novel, this scene did not happen.
Tanks were quite frightening when they first appeared although that fear was quickly dispelled when out of the initial 32, only about 8 actually reached the enemy line through mechanical failure, terrain and a mix of enemy artillery fire. Still a horrifying sight to see something like that inexorably walking towards you at walking pace while rifle rounds just bounce of it.

He’s just standing there
MENACINGLY
If anyone is wondering, no this is in fact not the first introduction of tanks, as the French and British had already been using tanks for the previous 2 years before this scene takes place. The Germans would’ve already had light mobile artillery and anti tank rifles rip to apart the counter attack.
The Brits invented the rank, and were the first to field them in combat. The first tank prototype was produced in England in 1915. I don’t consider DaVinci’s version to be a modern combat tank so does not count.
