    It is so ridiculous, they charge 40% tax if you, as a foreigner, want to use your own phone with an Indonesian SIM. I get that they want to fight the illegal import of phones, but this solution is just wrong.

    I get the needs but also kind of sad. IMEI Blacklists were designed to fight mobile phone theft but its now getting used this way. IMEI gets blacklisted after a theft has been reported and carriers share that blacklist. Indonesia took themselves out of it in order to address custom and duty dodging instead.
    For the record, you need a cellular modem to have an IMEI, if you use your laptop or ipad on wifi only (No SIM Card), then you dont have an IMEI and therefor you do not need to register. This only affect devices with LTE modem from which you plan to use on an Indonesian Cellular Network During your trip.
    If you plan on using VoIP mostly over wifi internet (No SIM card and No Voice or Data Plan from an Indonesian Cellular Carrier) then you should be fine as long as the border patrol agent has that understanding.

    I already reached jakarta and no one from airport customs asked me to register my Mobile imei when I filled the form infront of that officers. Now.. I have to pay 40% tax of the price for my old Mobile. It's so stupid 🙄.. Why they not provide all informations from customs at airport. Not even mentioned in flight booking or other websites. I'm really confused about the idea behind this rule and now I decided to use wifi and make WhatsApp calls and messages only during stay..

    As an indonesian living abroad the Country I found this also very difficult to go back my home town with my family ! totally ridiculous !! Idk its is really for safety but actually this is one of the reason tourism in Indonesia won't back as normal because everything seems arranged to be complicated ! 😭 well if that so how about tourist purchase Sim card from Grapari Telkom are better ? Even the validation only temporary but i need my devices keep exists for 45 days !

    It is very clear that this measure is to combat the illegal trade in the sale of mobile phones but, as a tourist, absolutely i need to keep & use my phone, do i have to pay that 40% tax??
    In Pakistan, they ask you to register only without pay anything & you have 60 days, if you stay more then you will have to pay the tax, Does Indonesia have the same system? Or do I have to pay tax directly as soon as I arrive at the airport?
    Unfortunately, the video is Ambiguous, beside the music is so loud!!!

      You have to pay or use 7 or 14 day tourist sim cards. If you join Bali groups on facebook you can ask around for someone who can register your IMEI with a provider without having to pay extortionate import tax and you can use a normal sim.

      @@AlecSenda Unfortunately, one of Indonesian citizen just a comment the he paid IDR 1.500.000 in the airport & his cellphone cost under $500, That's mean Originally they do not implement their law in the right way, in addition, is the customs tax law based on the price of the device new or is the device priced as a user?

      @EmmieB Před 2 lety +1

      Did you pay the tax at the time of registration? If so, you can probably go to any certified Telkomsel store or kiosk (or whichever carrier you chose for your SIM) and they will renew the registration. Alternatively, you can go to a customs office in Renon or to the Ngurah Rai airport (joy...)
