How AfD reached the German parliament

  • Angela Merkel has been re-elected for a fourth term, but it's a hollow victory given the pummelling she and her former coalition partners received. and the success of the right-wing, nationalist Alternative for Germany party. The AfD, which promised to fight "an invasion of foreigners", seems to have capitalised on a backlash over Mrs Merkel's decision to open Germany's borders to over a million migrants and refugees in 2015. It all leaves a tense political backdrop and Mrs Merkel with a headache as she tries to cobble together a new ruling coalition.

I say this as a man of color: the bias of this kind of reporting is why the Right will grow. Every citizen has a democratic right to oppose an outlandish policy. A policy which invites people from the most violent, and most intolerant part of the world, can be be questioned, denounced, and peacefully opposed. Old labels like 'racist' are cheap shots. Matt Frei, a decent journalist otherwise, missed the chance to provide a balanced analysis of the political status-quo in Europe.

I am quite sure the election was manipulated. In Saxony there were enough volunteers to make sure the votes/ballots are counted correctly and that no fraud will happen.
AfD got the strongest party in Saxony? No way! How could that be? Oh! People are using their democratic rights? Oh well... Discrediting and infiltration doesn't work anymore... Well, we have a bullet for every single one of them...
Damn people which speak their mind... They should pay and shut the fuck up!

Angela Merkel was not elected for a fourth term
The voting system in Germany gives the voters a means to decide who shall represent their interests in the parliament ("Bundestag"). It does not allow voting a chancellor.
It remains to be seen, if the Bundestag really elects Merkel. Many, many Germans are sick of her and there has never been a "Jamaica" coalition (black/yellow/green) at the federal level ...

Angela Merkel has not been elected for another term. The CDU party would need an absolute majority (50+%) to choose a chancellor on their own. They only achieved 32 % or so which means that they need another party to form a coalition which can then elect a chancellor. So theoretically it could be someone else. Please change the description because it is wrong. The chancellor is not automatically the candidate of the party with the most votes. The chancellor is elected by the whole paliamemt and needs at least 50% approval. If the other parties form a coalition that covers 50%+ of the seats they can nominate and elect a chancellor.

That's an odd idea that nobody is even mentioning.

These manipulated news are making me sick.
What the afd politician meant was not (as you made it seem) "we are proud of our nazi history"
    That’s wrong!
"We are proud of our history" means we are proud of our military for fighting over 5 years against over 5 nations! That is impressive.
I think no other nation would have been able to fight for this long.
We aren’t proud of the fact why 2nd world war started. But to be honest quite the exact happened in the "Türkei" with the "Armeniern".
After world war 1 all Germans were disappointed and tried to blame the loss on a minority of inhabitants.
In Addition sorry, but if you would know about the historical events that took place before world war 1 and our point of view back then. Perhaps you could understand why the Germans acted like this back then.
Nowadays especially, Germany is a wonderful country with "Sozialleistungen", great education and mostly "Chancengleichheit".
These are the achievements that our ancestors (who weren’t all nazis) brought us. There is no need to be ashamed or making ourselves small. We should be proud of our country.
The only parties who support this patriotism are the right parties. No wonder that the Germans can’t take it anymore.

They are part of the nation, have citizenship & thats it. 30,000 Germans living in Africa after Germany slaughtered hundreds of thousands of the Herero tribe - if German ycarries on with all this xenophobia i hope they understand that there will be a reaction too. What happens to the 30,000 Germans living here if the people decide to revolt against them
I agree Germans shouldnt be made to feel ashamed of their past its history, the only problem is that the world is extremely scared looking at these types of things because the undertone or foundation of it all is still "germany for germans only" - but who gets to decide who is german & who isnt?.....the political parties.....again
