Hammock Camping 101 | How I pack my backpack when hammock camping?

- This video describes how I pack my backpack when I go hammock camping. I quickly realized that I needed a method for how I pack my backpack to make things a bit easier and more convenient when I got to camp and setting up my hammock. I got tired of digging around my backpack and trying to find the next piece of gear and spreading all my other gear on the ground while searching. I wanted a better method for packing my gear that will help me when I get to camp.
This video shows the type of gear I will take on a typical 3-day backpacking trip when I am hammock camping, how I pack that gear, and why I pack it the way that I do. I have found that this approach helps me be more efficient when I get to camp and start pulling everything out of my backpack.

I just got the kumo 36 for an overnight bag hammock camping. This is super helpful to visualize the order of which things should be accessed and packed. I’m still trying to figure out a different hydration system as I’ve used bladders for years. I like your use of the larger container for camp.
Hey! Thanks for your feedback. The Kumo is new for me this year too and I will be trying it out on my first backpacking trip in a couple of weeks at Capitol Reef.
As for the hydration system, I will probably do a video of that sometime during this summer as I do think I do it a bit differently than most. I don't always bring the 3L bag but it definitely comes in handy when I have long water hauls or when I know I won't be camping close to water. Plus, the Katadyn filter fits onto it and I like having two filters in my backpack in case something happens to one. It is one of the few items where I bring a backup because I think it is critical in case something happens to one.
For most trips I only need to carry a water bottle and 1L Katadyn filter. This allows me to have a flavored drink when eating dinner or an electrolyte drink while I am hiking. If I just want water then I just drink from the Katadyn filter. But it is great for scooping and drinking or easy filtering into my water bottle.

Living in the N.E. I feel a hammock is the way to go removing tenting variables but I just can't get the weight comparable to my UL ground shelter. Hammocking adds extra volume and weight. I've tried it all...I even have a hammock made of bug netting basically! I basically use hammock for short 1-2 nights out but when I go long distance distance I go back to the ground.

Dutch Netless Hammock = 5.1 oz
Bug Net = 5.5 oz
Whoopie Slings (2) = 3.3 oz
NeoAir Uberlite Sleep Pad = 8.2
Hammock Gear Tarp w/ stakes = 11.9
TOTAL = 34 oz (2.1 lbs)
Zpacks Duplex Tent (single wall, no fly needed) = 21.9 oz
6 stacks = 2.7 oz
NeoAir Uberlite Sleep Pad = 8.2
TOTAL = 32.8 oz (2 lbs).
Now, these are not my go to setups for a hammock or tent. I prefer an under quilt when I use a hammock, and I prefer using my Nemo Tesnor Insulated pad (which is much heavier) when I use a tent. But I can definitely get my lightest hammock setup to be comparable to my lightest weight setup for a tent.
And to your point, you could easily get the tent setup even lower. You could use a tent like the Zpacks Plex Solo Lite tent (1 person) which only weighs 11.8 oz. Or you could go the tarp only route and sleep on a cell foam pad as your shelter. A hammock will never be able to compete with those options when it comes to weight and going ultralight.
For me, I prioritize sleep, and I sleep better in a hammock with an under quilt. So I no longer try to go ultralight with my setup and am looking more for comfort and convenience. However, I know other backpackers love sleeping in their tent and love sleeping on the ground. If that were me then I probably would invest in the Plex Solo but I love my Nemo Tensor and would sacrifice the weight for the comfort of that pad over my NeoAir Uberlite pad.

Great video! I loved the simple nature of it. Thank you for keeping the focus on teaching and not entertaining. I've never gone backpacking before, but I am planning on a trip this year. Your content is straightforward, simple, and seemingly sound. In short, exactly what I am looking for when doing research for my first trip in the backcountry. I'd much rather be listening to a backpacking expert than a CZcams expert (not as if the two are exclusive...I think you know what I mean ;).

My packing process is similar in most regards, but I was surprised that you put your under quilt on the bottom. I suspect the difference is that you may be a gathered end hammocker, and I'm using a bridge hammock. I flip the whole hammock upside down to attach my under quilt, so it goes on before the top quilt. Therefore my top quilt is the first item (maybe sleep clothes before that) into the pack, then under quilt.
You are correct. I typically use a gathered end hammock when backpacking. If I were to bring my bridge hammock then I too would pack my top quilt first. However, when I use a bridge hammock I prefer my Nemo Tensor and ZenBivy sleep system than using an under quilt. I've tried both but love my Nemo Tensor combined with the ZenBivy sleep system. So I will pack those first, then my clothes bag and pillow and have my hammock bridge on top with the poles in the side pocket.
