  • Ian returns to Unbound this year as the defending champion and King of Gravel. Frontiers: Return to Unbound looks back at the last year's win and the changes over the past twelve months. The process and the pressure of returning to Unbound as the defending champ has put things into perspective and further confirmed his step away from the World Tour and into this new challenge in the sport of cycling. Ian has found success because he has chased the result but has actively participated in the journey and valued the respect of his competitors above the results. Ian is the humblest guy in gravel and arguably in the sport. This perspective has given him the freedom to be a good father, husband, friend, and competitor.
“I want to cross the finish line and I want to be able to look at my competitors whether they are ahead of me or behind me and give them a hug, give them a handshake, and acknowledge that we both had a phenomenal day out on the bike.” - Ian Boswell
With fresh legs and fresh perspective, these athletes are setting a new definition of success and applying their savvy entrepreneurial spirit to build a career on their terms. And though they bring miles of experience and credibility, even the most seasoned pro recognizes they are entering uncharted territory.

Great video and perfect explaining of the idea of gravel racing - success is more than the result! 👍🏼❤️

“Win or lose,…it’s got to be fun.” Absolutely. Recently went to a big gravel event…and it was all about making people feel guilty, esp if they were there to race.

Ian Boswell is a genuine, authentic person with his priorities in the right place. I share his desire to keep the spirit of gravel pure. Pure fun, pure adventure and a pure challenge

👏👏 We had a gravel ride last night where everyone rode super hard, but we kept the 5 of us together the whole time, rather than our usual attacks/sprints/regroups. It was way more fun riding for the group than riding for ourselves.

I should have figured y'all had a youtube channel. Good stuff, this. New subscriber, not so new Wahoo user (Elemnt Bolt, Ticker and Cadence). I got ready to ride this morning and my Elemnt has somethin wrong with the screen, I hope it doesn't croak any time soon. Anyway, Ian.. you're a very strong person and I applaud you

I enjoy the sentiment expressed by Ian, but I mean if a sport gains traction, which in turn gains sponsors and potentiel monetary gains for athletes it is inevitable that those who seek to live off the sport will take major races seriously. Multiple aspiring gravel racers have said that the pro peleton in gravel races is extremely competitive and they'll get sworn at if they miss a turn pulling.

I agree. There’s something a bit icky about the “story of Unbound” being told by a former Pro Road Rider who’s only done the race a handful of times, has a huge group of sponsors, and is financially incentivized to win

If you crossed the finish and gave it you all than that should be more rewarded than the result(paraphrasing), unless you’re using aero bars.

Wahoo: The term you needed at 3min 6sec is “wife” not “partner to Ian Boswell”

Sure - we have fun but - Damn Ian. You won Unbound "without even trying." 4realz? Did you mean to say that? No, that doesn't sound deluded at all!

I think what he was saying was that he wasn’t as emotionally invested as he’d been on the road circuit with surprising results. That performance anxiety wasn’t a handicap which it did often is.

in short... lets get rid of aero bars in gravel racing

No it doesn’t matter your color, gender or identity….so why make it an issue?
