Tonight we sit down with Jeff Belanger, who is one of the most visible and prolific researchers of folklore and legends today. A natural storyteller, he’s the award-winning, Emmy-nominated host, writer, and producer of the New England Legends series on PBS and Amazon Prime, and is the author of over a dozen books (published in six languages). He also hosts the New England Legends weekly podcast.
Always one for chasing adventures, Jeff has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, he’s explored the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, he’s searched the catacombs of Paris, France (where he encountered his first ghost), he faced his life-long struggle with basophobia on his birthday by going skydiving, and he’s been ghost hunting all over the world from a former TB asylum in Kentucky, to medieval castles in Europe, to an abandoned prison in Australia.
Jeff got his start as a journalist in 1997, where he learned how to connect with people from all walks of life. For his work, he’s interviewed thousands of people about their encounters with the profound.

I've lived a strange and supernatural abundant life since a child..I'm a Connecticut native and growing up in old new England there's countless strangeness in this region. When I was 17 yrs old I fell on tough times and left a toxic environment. My best friend invited me to live with his girlfriend and her family on a 300 yr old property in the Berkshires of Granville Massachusetts..only catch was I had to live in the basement level of their 200 yr old 3 story barn. It was somewhat inhabitable cause her father converted it into a Marijuana grow house a few yrs prior. Had electricity, all concrete foundation and floors and a small wood stove to keep warm..I moved in around October 1st 2003. Immediately had intense paranormal activities happening nightly. Footsteps,voices, knocking on my door. Many nights I could slightly hear native American chanting and drumming happening. Non of the family believed me because they nvr heard anything or had any experiences(at least that they willingly shared with me). I hunkered down in the dead of a harsh n.e. winter being terrorized nightly by spirits. Till it all reached a breaking point. The spirits almost killed me. So I left packing a backpack nvr to return to that property ever again. Furthermore it was a part of the underground railroad and was a main trading spot for all the new England Indian tribes. The property was also a meeting spot for the Hartford fiddlers club during the 1800s. This crazy experience shaped me and changed me for life...

@@BlackVibeBallsack well it all started out subtly with minor events the first few weeks. When I moved in the barn I first started hearing boots walking above me, heel to toe. From one corner of the room to the other. Like cowboy boots almost with spurs. At least that's how it sounded to me. Fkd up part was, that second level of the barn was completely full of cars and junk to the ceiling of it. There was no possible way anyone could physically walk on that level. So that's when I knew something of the paranormal was happening. It would occur almost night around 2am-4am.. then I started experiencing random cold spots in the room and having an overwhelming sense of being watched. Even when I had that stove raging fire and heating the room to at least mid 70 degrees I would feel random cold spots. They would shift and move.. that happened for weeks and weeks. I started to confide in my friends and tell them my experiences in the barn at night. They didn't believe me much at all which frustrated me and I just began to isolate and keep to myself. Which sucked but whatever.. then the dead of winter hit early to mid December. We got tons of snow that yr and it was a challenge to keep the small wood stove going and room warm but I managed. I remember one night I had to take a piss, it was a blizzard outside and around 1 am.. I walk out my door and while taking a piss I see these 2 huge red glowing eyes looking at me. They appeared about 9 to 10 ft off the ground near a tree. I got so scared I ran back inside the barn damn near pissing on myself... that's when things took a dark turn on the property and the activity ramped up significantly. The following days and nights I began to hear native American drumming and chanting ever so softly in the barn. Usually would start right before I would be dozing off. It was the strangest thing ever and creeped me out! At that point I was too afraid to sleep in the barn by my lonesome self anymore. So I would sneak into there house and sleep on the sofa. The family tho after a couple weeks of me sleeping on there couch said I had to go bak to the barn and couldn't crash on the couch anymore. So reluctantly I returned into my nightmare of a "room".. I had told my good friend Matt who was a neighbor of ours too, that I had been having strange things happen to me. So I asked him to come and crash in the barn one night, so I could confirm it wasn't me going insane. He was open to it and somewhat skeptical but agreed. Sure as shit, that night the footsteps happened around 230am.. he sat up all wide eyed looking at me with a look of disbelief and said, I hear footsteps! I said I fkn told you bro, this damn barn and property is Hella haunted!!! Then later that night the Indian drumming and chants started up. He again sat there with me listening to the same ghostly chants and that really freaked Matt out! At that point he said, I believe u man and I'm not staying the night in this place any longer and he left. That gave me relief that someone else experienced what I had been experiencing for months! It was the validation I needed. But still, I was stuck living in this goddamn haunted barn because I had nowhere else to go. A couple months go by, same intense nightly happenings. Not wanting to be alone at night, I would take my buddy's dog into the barn with me at night to sleep with me and keep me company. He was a sweet doggo,black lab named Jerry. He was very protective and would always alert with barking. So this one particular night I had Jerry with me. It was single digits cold outside and I had to be constantly stocking the wood stove to keep warm. So before I went to bed, I stuffed that wood stove FULL! I wound up crashing out around 2am that night. The dog slept at my feet and the night was quiet. The following morning I awoke to my best friend screaming and yelling, cussing me out through the door to my room. (This door was about 6 inches thick with a heavy heavy duty sliding flat latch locking mechanism that was on the inside of my door). I woke up to this door being absolutely destroyed. It's hard to explain but the entire door frame was hanging off the top corner, the 5 inch long horse nails that it was framed in with had all been backed out. The 6inch by half inch slide bolt lock had been completely destroyed and the spring lay on the ground. I was baffled and confused as all hell. My buddy thought I had destroyed the door but after a while even he realized there was no possible way in hell I could have done that myself. Furthermore more the wood stove was right next to the door in the corner of the room. Well, the stove pipes had been knocked off, which would have filled the room up with smoke although I had slept through out the entire night! The dog never barked or anything. After that, I packed a back pack,left all my shit behind and left. Never returned there again. Slept on the streets for awhile. Anything was better than staying there at that point. A few other things happened there. One night I heard the rattling of chains on the other side of my wall where my bed/couch was. We later accidentally found a secret hidden chamber under the slate stone walkway that lead into a small chamber room with 2 sets of shackles and chains were imbedded into the wall. That's when the family and I discovered the house had definitely been a part of the underground railroad. Which explained what I heard. Yeah man, it was a fkd up crazy experience. I'm almost 37yrs old and it still affects me to this day. I still get goose bumps and uneasy feeling in my stomach reliving my haunting.

Mary Todd Lincoln was a relative of mine. Ppl consider her a spendthrift (She bought an array of new chinaware) and mentally unwell. Loss of her son and her ill health should hold more water. She did have séances but they were popular in the time. I do think she was a rough go as a wife. Lincoln was more complicated than what history portrays. My best friend since childhood is also a relative of Mary. Odd.

Ahhhhh!!! We have a time share n the Berkshire. We quad October mountain and that was the 1st place I saw BF!!! The 2nd place was balance Rock , 15 min away !!! We saw evidence of BF many times and had tree placed across our trail few times. Once in Baxter, giant borders were put across our path on our way back down mountain. I was THRILLED to hear you say October mountain. !!! Oh one day they brought in a huge outhouse and put in Pittsfield mountain parking lot, at balance Rock, the next day we drove back and it was CRUSHED! The night leaving prior, we had see. A BF in that parking lot. It was so obvious what happened !!! That huge outhouse looked like a wrecking ball beat it down so enjoyed you talking about thus area !! Oh one night 2 were calling to each other for like 30 min. It had ppl coming out of homes just in aw of wth it was.

I'm from Quebec in our folklore its ''Loup- Garou'' (p is silent) which is a werewolf type creature. My personal favourite is ''Bonnehomme sept heures'' which is our Slender man. It's a common story told to kids to go to bed at night before ''le bonnehomme sept heures'' will come and take you.

I loved all of it but (Commercial break) one part had me (Commercial break) extra excited is his (Commercial break) point about Betty & Barney (Rubble!) Hill, being an interracial couple. Whenever I (Commercial break) tell people of that fabulous encounter I too point out they (Commercial break) were an interracial couple, at a time in (Commercial break) history where they surely would not wish to call attention to themselves.

I had an experience with Sasquatch in Western MA about 6 years ago although I hadn't put all the pieces together until recently. There are squatch in Becket, MA for sure!
That bigfoot must've been lost. They usually stay further north in the Savoy area.

@mrmatthew2443 Not at all, I was working as a logger at the time and I was all alone cutting firewood. Something (or more likely multiple somethings) were watching me and banging in the woods. I absolutely couldn't ignore the feeling. I had to leave. I went back to that remote property a few more times and every time I found evidence...I was just too dumb to put it all together...lol.

I have had some encounters. My girlfriend, another friend, and I saw a fleet of triangle shaped (but with rounded corners) UFOs when we are out in a field late at night, they moved so slow, maybe 1000 feet above us, and didn’t make a sound. I had an amazing spiritual experience around that time where I felt a deeper reality that just was incredible, it lasted about a week and I was filled with so much knowledge and wisdom. Camping one time I heard tree knocks in the middle of the night that last an hour or so, and on that same place had the inexplicable feeling of being watching and followed. A few other experiences as well from childhood, to “flying” dreams that felt absolutely real. This universe is so much more than we are usually aware of. All sorts of things are underneath our normal reality and for some reason some of us have these experiences.
40 min in and almost 18 ads every 4 -5 min. Otherwise awesome show. I live within the Bridgewater triangle and love hearing things about Massachusetts that I never knew.

It`s like that in deep south Louisiana....pure darkness on sketchy roads for miles...no road signs warning of curves...gators in the road...gators in the ditches... then you start seeing the dim light from a town miles away. Hated it.

Seen my 1st bf sitting there in 20 16 (if you heard about the new Porta potty that was squashed....yup that bf) trails blocked with trees and at becket mountain giant borders blocked our trail on way bk. Oh yeah Berkshire mountains def have bf. Goosebumps to hear it brought up. Also huge long vocalization in Lee mass one night...many came outside to hear Yes !!!!!!!

@@erikrhafer6644 I don't know how large it was but he said that it was breaking brush and snapping limbs. He was hunting in an apple orchard at night and was up in the tree. He's passed away now, so I am going on what I can remember. He said that it went back into the woods.

I grew up I Bridgewater, those fools who made the documentary didn't talk to anyone who really knows the score. They call the Pequot war a war when it was an outright massacre, they talk up grassy island,and the folks are off by 15 miles .....it's a curse. My town has a horrible track record, especially with youth lost to drugs ect....I know many people who have seen critics and sabe people...I had property deep in the swamp with all kinds of paranormal effects....

My parents lived in historic Lenox, MA in the Berkshire's at the old Curtis Hotel which had been turned into a elderly housing. I used to go on weekends and get up early to go for an exercise walk. There is a beautiful stone Methodist Church on the corner. Coming from the Curtis I would take a right immediately at the church. Very heavily wooded road. On my way back one morning about 6:30 I began smelling a super strong wet dog smell and became absolutely terrified. I am saying terror that I had only felt once before In New Brunswick Canada in the woods. Same thing, strong wet dog smell and terror like never before. I never looked behind either time. In MA I crossed the street and powered walked my ass off. Never a heard sound,. In Canada I quickly caught up to the group I was with. Again not a sound. Simply the odor and absolute terror.
I lived in Dover at the time the Dover Demon was sighted and did a lot of research on it when i was back in Dover from 2014 - 2016. Sadly, I sent Jeff Belanger an email with details some time over the last year but never heard back from him. Oh well. I didn't see it, but it was a freaky time. Only high school kids from Dover/Sherborn Jr/Sr HS saw it. The consensus from those who were there at the time was the LSD that was going around the high school at that time of year affected the kids in that way.
It was seen 2 miles from my house. And the path that it took from the sightings meant that it had to go through some NASTY swamp that feeds the watershed of the upper Charles River.

I just get mad at the frequency of the commercials lol but I honestly believe most are like me and like all strangeness and even if people don’t believe that Sasquatch is connected to the other odd happenings, it’s plain to see a lot of it does happen on the same areas for some reason..

I still enjoy this too tho but not as much. Sorry guys. I guess. It sucks that corporate shut it down but now that he's building this youtube following he can do his own stuff and maybe he's planning to do so who knows? After the 20 year anniversary thing he's selling there's maybe enough money left to produce his own youtube shows (like finding bigfoot and surviving). Unfortunately, some of us might have evolved but historically we continue to make the same mistakes. There will always be opportunities for evil to flourish. I don't have much faith in our species. Sadly, for the upcoming generations.

I'm from rural Upstate NY in Columbia County, which is right next to Berkshire County Massachusetts. The rivalry is mostly NYC/Boston, but we do call bad MA drivers "Mass-holes". We call people from NYC "Cidiots". I love Boston and hate NYC.
I heard a Bigfoot at least once, and my brother-in-law had an experience with an aggressive Bigfoot in his barn less than 20 miles from the Western Massachusetts border. I've been to Massachusetts many, many times and camped not far from Springfield but never experienced anything there.
What did it do to brother?
I live in berkshire county, ten mins from october mountain, as mentioned in this video. I can confirm it is spooky, and bad news. It has got everything. Ufos, ghosts, bigfoot, disappearances, murders. It is a labyrinth of dark, desolate roads. Oh, and you can forget about any cell service up there as well. My dad grew up in lenox, right against the mountain, and had a creepy bigfoot sighting as a teen.
@@janetairlines1351 Great Barrington had a famous UFO sighting several years ago. Lenox is a beautiful area and I always loved the Red Lion Inn. I've never been inside, but it's beautiful outside. I live in Arizona now and miss the history, architecture, grass, water, and some of the food. There are Bigfoot sightings here, too.

Look guys, I don't know if you are trying to keep it PG or something ... but There have been plenty of DEATHs with known or unknown causes that can be appointed to Sabe. It's not an elephant in the room, psychological pain or PTSD some will attest to having post experience, livestock, etc. When ever I here someone ask the Q "do you know of one killing?" I think of the guy folded backward in the passenger floorboard of his pickup, with the doOR CLOsed, his hat found on the gun range mound or backstop, and his rifle bent around in half at a base of a tree a ways back.
For me? The story from missing 411 with David Paulidies. The woman that was ripped torn in half starting from her private area all the way up to her rib cage set on top of the hood of the truck & her boyfriend's head twisted & neck broken facing backwards.

Try searching it on CZcams or google by those words. Put David's full name & a short description like " lady ripped in half and found with head twisted head" etc etc...maybe you'll have better luck finding then me 🙏🏽 But David on the is telling alot different stories so it's not like long dragged out story but enough to creep you out 😮

I have heard that story . Scary how the Sasquatch dragged her back up her car and when she woke up she got in here car and left! Another hard to believe is epidd as ode 419 of the old lady that ttt as Les care of this creatures in her house while the big alpha Sasquatch goes hunting and they love to watch spongebob cartoons. CZcams Premium. $3 a week. I subscribed a year ago and I completely forget that CZcams used to have ads for months until I see someone complain in the comments. It's so nice that I don't even watch regular TV anymore because of so much wasted time watching commercials.

No, it isn’t. Les became friends with Wes some time ago, and he was even on Wes’s podcast. I’m sure Les is helping Wes out to give him exposure because of all his work, and because of the “How to Hunt” channel, and the credit people have been giving Steve. Steve does have a great show, but Wes has been doing his Sasquatch Chronicles podcast for years. He deserves credit.
