I feel sorry for the older people who shop at supermarkets, sometimes they only get to talk the checkout operator all week. The automated tills wouldn't provide that interaction. Littlewoods used to do a nice cafe but unfortunately they've gone now.

It's up to the younger generations to look after the elderly, which isn't happening as it used to.
I'm not saying they're all destitute but a lot have no family or friends left.
Always take the time to make conversation with the elderly.

Lee, here in the US, most merchants accept cash or card. The advantage of not accepting card is that the income often goes unreported because there is no paper trail. A lot of merchants don't have that policy here because they know it can trigger an audit by the IRS. You much have a similar thing there in the UK. If not, maybe they should be cracking down on these merchants so that it would encourage them to accept both forms of payment but also collect more income for the country.

Downsizing has been a common practice in the consumer goods industries for decades. And, I've participated in it.
Less crisps (potato chips) in the bag. Less Doritos in the bag. Less nappies in the bag, etc.
It"s sort of a game that the big competitors play. If your competition downsized. Then you're pretty much forced to follow suit. It is an instant way to boost profit margins. It's not the best way to increase margins, but usually the quickest.

Got to admit I miss the cafe in my local Sainsburys here in Telford as it also is permanently closed. The only ones still with a cafe is Asda and Morrisons. Both are good but Morrisons is better than Asda imo for their breakfast. We also have a Wetherspoons in Telford Town centre and I enjoy the choices on their breakfast menu and they are slightly cheaper than the supermarkets and they also serve unlimited tea or coffee at just over a pound. I always go to Wetherspoons for the better value for money.
Great video again and I am sorry you had disappointment at me pound bakery and you should have gone for the pastries which are really good and cheaper than Greggs. The only one I went to was in Llandudno when I was a weekend break there, it was never empty and you could sit down in there also to eat your food in comfort if you got there early enough to find a seat.

Difference between self checkout and being dealt with by a person. Self checkout you go at your own pace putting stuff through. If you have scan as you go even better. With waiting at a check out it takes forever and the cashier is wizzing your food through, you don't have time to pack it in a good order so your getting stressed because your still packing and cashiers " Cash or Card" and your well let me put this in my bags.

Work for one of well mentioned supermarkets. Things were good about 14 years ago, our store was bought out and we transferred from Somerfield.
Got sent out to another store to be trained up, plenty of time for us, paperwork training, fuel expenses were paid for the extra distance and also time, so left home when my shift started and left work to be home in time for finishing time. Now new colleagues get plonked in front of a computer mostly for training
My training store had a subsidised staff canteen and never had the same meal twice in 7 weeks, lovely food cooked from shop floor goods by as you say dinner style ladies. Dinner like pie and chips or sausage and mash and veg was £1-1.50 so was for nothing.
Over the years, more and more self scan, less and less staff, more pressure, stress and end up burned out. CEO’s bonuses are nice and generous tho 🤔

Seeing you drive on those motorways, that’s a rare thing my way here in Norfolk. The main road into Great Yarmouth is a single carriageway A47 “Acle Straight” as it’s locally known and sometimes the traffic into town can be right the way along especially in the summer months. I recall when Wagon Wheels were as big as tea plates. Now one bite and it’s practically gone. We used to call ‘em sawdust biscuits as a kid. Mars bars used to be thick and chunky and as for Yorkie bars, they were meant for truck drivers. thick and chunky chocolate now thin super slim bars. My Sainsburys has closed their cafe and it’s now an Argos outlet.

As for crisps, we don't buy Walkers anymore. You pay a fortune for basically a bag of air. Aldi's Snackrite versions are much nicer, cheaper, and you get a full bag. I also agree with you about having choice of card or cash. I know businesses get charges for taking card but on the flip side, they must lose more money in customers walking away because they don't have cash on them. I think certain companies refuse to take card to save on tax in my opinion.

Sainsburys closed in my city during lockdown and never reopened. Then the store closed the bakery deli counter etc and never reopened. Staff said it was due to covid, and people's shopping habits changed. 🙄 apparently they don't have time to sit have eat breakfast etc, they like to eat and drink on the go 🙄 I can go in sainsburys shopping and no one talks, its all self serve checkouts and staff don't communicate. My Mum only spoke to a member of staff when she was accused of not paying for strawberries 😒 yep strawberries event hough it was on the receipt. The staff member said it was on the receipt but didn't apologise for accusing her of stealing.

Hi Lee, I used to work at Sainsburys cafe for years they’re getting rid of them all nationwide and either off sourcing them to Starbucks or turning that space into an Argos .

Do you know the one that really grinds my gears, Lee? Whilst shopping lately I've noticed this a lot of times lately, I've gone to get my basics and they have written on them in large bold font "NEW" which made me think "what have they changed about these, I hope it doesn't ruin them as I quite enjoy them" anyway, it turns out the only reason they were "NEW" was because they were 10% smaller and 10% more expensive. I'll give you an example, I used to buy Mcvitie's digestives in a twin pack, 2x400g for £2.30, went in one day and the "NEW" biscuits were now 2x360g and £2.60. Just had a quick look out of curiosity and they're now £3. Outrageous.

Our local Sainsbury’s cafe shut ages ago in town no idea why, probably staff shortages or something. Prices of food etc are silly these days since Covid, the war & just the general cost of living, absolute madness

Spoke to a shop keeper local the other day who's had to go cash only. I've always wanted both methods of payment offered, however I now understand after what he has said to me. After I payed cash I did ask why and here's what he said. After the "COVID" and "WAR IN UKRAINE" the prices of his stock at whole salers and cash and carry has gone up ten fold as well as his monthly fee and percentage on transactions for the card machine and payments. Now obviously his prices had to rise however to keep that to a minimum for the locals something had to give meaning the method of card payment had to go in order to not yet again raise prices on items, as the more he raises in a local shop the more he takes the flack for, however he still gets slated for removing card option, so what can he do ! After that I sort of see why you would go for it as a small retailer and could you imagine the stick off people if you raised card prices only, people would kick off I think. Times are hard and I think the local businesses are trying to do what's best in a bad set of circumstances, however do t gete wrong some people do do it for tax reasons hahaha.

Hi Lee. I used to work at Nestle in York. Nestle had to reduce the size of their chocolate bars to comply with government legislation to reduce sugar intake. Sugar was reduced and replaced with alternatives, and the physical size of the bars were reduced at the same time. Personally I think this is ridiculous because if you want as much as you had before, then you would eat 2 bars instead of 1, so in effect you actually eat more. After the sugar was reduced the bars didn't taste the same 🙄🤷‍♂️

Sainsburys cafes up here closed down months ago. They were supposedly meant to be turning the old cafe at our local one into a big food court (a bit like the Morrisons Market Kitchen you went to).
    Still hasn't happened.

They've opened a food court at my local Sainsbury's but apparently it's not very good, wish I had a Morrisons near me with a market kitchen, the video Lee did made it look so yummy.

C'mon Lee. How difficult is it to keep 20 quid in your wallet at all times to support cash business? If you (and the rest of us) don't bother, there will 100% be no cash option in the nearest future....with all that entails.

In Warrington the Sainsbury's cafe is now an Argos shop. Do places only take cash so they can pocket the money instead of having to put it through the books avoiding having to pass the vat to the government
