While many versions use artificially-flavored store-bought whipped cream, today we're bumping up the flavor by making our own homemade whipped cream and tweaking this recipe to dessert salad perfection!

    Spatulas (Affiliate Link): amzn.to/2ENNdwf
    Glass bowls (Affiliate Link): amzn.to/2C47vQx
    Digital Scale (Affiliate Link): amzn.to/2EtNmUe
    Ingredients
    3/4 cups heavy cream (180ml)
    1/4 cup powdered sugar (35g)
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    1/2 cup sour cream (120g)
11 oz can mandarin oranges, well drained (312g)
10 oz ¾ cup maraschino cherries (without stems)
    1 8 oz can pineapple tidbits, well-drained
    1 1/2 cups sweetened shredded coconut (120g)
    4 cups mini marshmallows¹ (200g)
    Instructions
    00:00 Introduction
00:50 Combine heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in a large bowl. Use an electric mixer to beat until mixture is thick, billowy, and the consistency of Cool Whip.
    01:44 Stir in sour cream.
02:05 In a separate bowl, stir together oranges, cherries, pineapple, coconut, and mini marshmallows.
03:01 Add whipped cream/sour cream mixture and stir until completely combined.
03:25 Cover bowl and chill in refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving.
    Notes
¹I like to use the rainbow/fruit flavored mini marshmallows for more of a tropical flavor, but classic white mini marshmallows work just as well!

Love ambrosia salad or 24 hour salad as it is also sometimes called as it does taste better after 24 hours in the fridge. My Mom since the1960s always made it with sour cream only as there is enough sugar in the fruit and marshmallows and I make it the same way. We always have it for Easter and Christmas whenever we have ham.

    Tip: Stabilize your whipping cream
Non stabilised whipped cream will start deflating after 1 hour but will keep for 2 to 3 days in the fridge (though it will weep). Stabilised cream can be kept in an airtight container or piping bag for 48 hours, and it will be fluffy like freshly made!
A stabilized whipped cream keeps its shape and is excellent for topping pies, cheesecakes, and more. Just a ½ teaspoon of cream of tarter per cup of heavy cream is all you need.
    OR
For every cup of heavy cream you whip, beat in 1 to 2 tablespoons of sour cream or creme fraiche. It won't make it tangy (or not in any truly notable way) but it does keep the whipped cream stable.
    Tip:
When whipping cream, add sugar and vanilla when the cream is about 1/2 whipped, and it will whip to a thicker consistency. Adding the sugar at the beginning results in thinner consistency. The cream and the bowl should be as cold as possible. The cream will whip easier and to a thicker consistency when very cold.

    Leave out the marshmallows.

I saw yogurt made with coconut milk. I'm not sure since I'm not lactose intolerant, but it seems like since you're putting coconut in the salad, it would go nicely with the fruity flavors.
