  • Art critic, Alastair Sooke, investigates the fascinating rediscovery of Leonardo’s Salvator Mundi, one of fewer than 20 surviving paintings accepted as from the artist’s own hand.
In 2011, the dramatic public unveiling of Salvator Mundi (‘Saviour of the World’) in the exhibition Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan at The National Gallery in London caused a worldwide media sensation. Painted by one of history’s greatest and most renowned artists, whose works are exceedingly rare - fewer than 20 paintings in existence are generally accepted as from the artist’s own hand - it was the first discovery of a painting by Leonardo da Vinci since 1909, when the Benois Madonna, now in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, came to light.
‘Salvator Mundi is a painting of the most iconic figure in the world by the most important artist of all time,’ says Loic Gouzer, Chairman, Post-War and Contemporary Art at Christie’s in New York. ‘The opportunity to bring this masterpiece to the market is an honour that comes around once in a lifetime. Despite being created approximately 500 years ago, the work of Leonardo is just as influential to the art that is being created today as it was in the 15th and 16th centuries. We felt that offering this painting within the context of our Post-War and Contemporary Evening Sale is a testament to the enduring relevance of this picture.’

While it is true that this painting is totally mesmerizing and has the same mysterious quality as other masterpieces by da Vinci, this video omits to mention VERY important factors that played in the "making" of this painting as "the last Da Vinci painting": a financial factor and a political factor. Obviously Christie's wanted this painting to reach records levels, and it did - the painting sold for $450 million in november 2017, becoming the most expensive painting ever sold. For THAT kind of money, Christie's sure did everything it takes to have experts build a case that the painting WAS made by Da Vinci himself. Beyond the amazing amount of money that was at stake, the painting also turned out to be of considerable politico-cultural value: bought by the department of Culture and tourism of Abu Dhabi, it is meant to become one of the main attractions of Le Louvre Abu Dhabi, just like Mona Lisa is one of the most iconic pieces of Le Louvre in Paris. If it were not a Da Vinci, obviously the sensation around it would cease to exist. This is obviously a case where scientific objectivity wad seriously warped to serve financial and political interests.

Amazing how tiny bits of charcoal dusted through tiny holes onto the canvas survived over 500yrs, cleanings, being painted over, etc.

I'd be surprised if Sooke is actually speaking directly in front of the painting and spitting all over it. Either the one used for the video is a fake or the video was edited to make it appear he is two feet away from the painting when he is talking.

Follow the fingers in the paintings of DaVinci and you'll find another layer. Even in this video, 01:16-01:18, you can a ghosting of a face in the left side background. Awesome painting.

This piece is not 100% Leo. It’s a collaboration piece at best with either Boltraffio or Luini. Christ’s right arm is foreshortened incorrectly, the shoulders are not balanced and the drapery on Christ’s left side is not only lighter but literally stands out from the rest of the garment. Also, the color of the right hand is different from the face and chest area. However, the curls, the details in the garment and the right hand can be considered Leonardo’s.

The face is very similar in proportions to the Mona Lisa painting. There is a speculation that the Mona Lisa is actually Leonardo painting himself as a woman (he was apparently a liberal man as well as bi-sexual). He also wasn't very religious either. If it was true then this painting could be his way of mocking the church by painting himself as Jesus.
Either way it's a fantastic painting with indescribable eyes (one minute they are scary the next they're haunting...).

Ah very cool to see but why a orb with no effect? This could point to his beliefs or to his interpretation of Christs influence on the earth. As you can see the orb isn't being affected by Christ . Makes me wonder would one get in trouble for such a belief back then. 🤔 look into what that orb actually stands for the globus cruciger. It could point to a miraculous trait in Christ and or what I've listed above. Was he religious? Is he depicting Christ as a mortal man
