They don't smile unless engaged by someone in conversation. It's not really a stereotype. I was taken for Russian by Russians early in my time there, in 1999, and they said it was because i was not smiling and did not look happy, as I might break into a smile. I saw this as a good thing at the time. Moscow, ya know. I think Sam brings out the smiles with his kind demeanor and good humor.

I am surprised how few knew where the station was. The usual response here in St Petersburg is, if they do not speak English, to ask others to assist or even take you there and explain the sights along the way since tourists are so common.
The camera was surely the cause for many to not wanting to engage. If you could camouflage it, for example, to have a shoulder bag and clip a phone to the front-facing panel of the bag.
I usually have a camera sling back when I am out walking and have a professional-style camera and several lenses and many girls stop me to ask me to take their photo. I meet several girls that way every time I leave my city center home. There are so many desirable sights to shoot, with so many palaces, cathedrals, canals, and ornate concert halls that NOT having a camera is more suspect :>)
For a large city, it is amazing how friendly and eager to aid a tourist the people here are. Maybe they are not intimidated by a still camera. I am way too old for any of these girls but if I take a two-hour walk, and do not meet 4-5 girls and exchange contracts into with 3 of them it would be unusual. Most of my long-term friends and all my girlfriends were met just being out in the city, not clubs(well sure I meet them in clubs but usually with someone I met recently. There are English-speaking social clubs that meet in a restaurant cafe of pub and get more practice speaking English with native speakers. Also for Italian, French, and one that does not have as many meetups for German. Most of those wanting to improve their confidence in speaking English are going to use it for international vacations and English is the international travel language.
One thing foreign viewers notice I am sure, is how nicely dressed and attractive average girls are, and how few are out of shape. And almost all are modest and very nice people. That is why it is so much fun talking to random people on the street, in a park, in a club or cafe, museum, at the intermission of an opera/ballet. Every day is fun, zero stress and social.

It is so odd to me that Americans have this view of everyday Russians that is the opposite of how Russians really are. Russians are very friendly (though shy) and seem to live to help others, especially English speaking foreigners. Sometimes going out of their own way to be helpful. What Americans don't realize is that Russians don't like to quarrel or conflict and they are very peaceful and want to have friends everywhere. They place a whole different importance on friendship. In America friendship is merely transactional and often needs to be bought. With Russians friends are on the same level as family. Friendships are to be cherished. It takes longer to become befriended by a Russian because it is so important to them so they are more careful.
I am of Russian background (Grandparents came from Russia), but I never knew any Russians outside of that until 2015. I have no friends in America because I can't afford it on all levels. I have a few acquaintances in Russia, but I have one very close friend who is Russian that I met in 2015 (she now lives in Armenia due to the war). It took 9 months of emails, which got to be prolific and then she decided we are officially friends and we started chatting by phone! She was afraid about her accent, but I am used to accents and the Russian accent is the cutest in the world. She speaks English better than I do! She showed me what real friendship is, I had never experienced that before. She also helped me with a bad situation. She also got me a remote teaching job with her for a year helping teach Russians English. I don't know how she pulled that off. She was a model when we met, but was quitting that and going into teaching because she has a passion for that and it pays better. To this day, we are so close that we can be mistaken for being related or married. The one thing she told me early on is that "To Russians, friends are forever". It is also unconditional.
I have met a few Russians as well and the one thread that runs through is how incredibly sweet they are. They are also very generous and will give you the last crumb. Be very careful when you are admiring something or showing great interest, they will try to give to you or something. Also, they get super excited if you even speak one word of Russian and even if you mess it up! Unlike Americans they don't yell at you telling you to go back where you came from. They do the opposite and you get free lessons in Russian language.
I'm always in awe of how they have been through and still go through so much bad stuff and yet have the capacity to be so sweet to others. Of course, every country has bad people as well, it just seems more concentrated in some countries over others.
Americans equate people to their governments, but Russians separate people from their governments in their view, people are individual and the same as them, we are all human.
