2021 Intense Primer 275 Pro Review

  • When I think of how the Intense Primer 275 rides, the first thing that comes to mind is traction. So much traction in fact that on long flat corners I was always able to push just a little bit harder on each lap looking for that breakaway point, and to be honest I never really found it. I ran out of skill before the bike ran out of traction. Transitioning through tight sections of trail came very easy for me while on the Intense Primer Pro. The bike is quite nimble when you need it to be but holds the line rather well at high speeds. It really performed it is best in tight, steep technical corners. The tighter the better. The 27.5” wheels made this thing a riot in the trees!
    The Intense Primer 275 also shined when it came time to charge high-speed, rough terrain. If I got on the bike blind-folded and was told it had 160mm of travel I would not second guess it. The JS Tuned Trail Link was great at eating up deep braking holes and big compressions with seemingly no loss in small bump compliance. I would hesitate to spend a few days in a bike park aboard most 140mm mountain bikes, but the Intense Primer is not one of them. It rides as if it has 20mm of travel hidden somewhere but does not sacrifice agility when it is needed most.

    Came of a Santa Cruz Gen 1 5010 to the Piimer 29 Pro this year (2023). The one word description I would use is SMOOTH. Still in first month of riding and tweaking; mainly cockpit. At 5' 10 and a spud and 78 kg I set the shock as per the instructions to 25% sag and haven't touched it. I find it plenty poppy at that sag (as much as the 5010), so comments other reviews that this bike isnt poppy is not my experience. Looks like the current shock, a FOX Performance Float X, is different from ones used for earlier reviews. Take the time to set it up and it wont disappoint on small kickers to jump lines. As for feeling like it has more travel, I cant say not having ridden anything other than 130 mm rear. It hasn't bottomed out yet on the rock gardens and drops here yet.
    As for climbing, I haven't found it lacking. It has climbed 25% grade fire roads that are loose over hardpack, rock and log step ups. Other reviews have said the seat angle is a bit slack; it may be but I don't find I have to roger myself with the point of the nose like the older geometry of the 5010 and sliding forward on the seat a centimeter sorts it out fine (you are allowed to move on your seat you know). I have some standard "test" climbs and so far I have matched or beaten best times completed on the 5010 which is built a kilo lighter and long travel hardtail. Fitness is lower than those best times.
    Big attraction for me was the Shimano build, which is a personal preference; weight, which at 14 kg which is generally a kilo lighter than other bikes of similar travel; and suspension. Other than a slightly shorter stem and wider carbon bar (muppet mistake thinking the bar was alloy) I haven't changed anything. The chain came a bit long and took a link out. Changed out the rear tyre, but that's just personal preference. You can ride this as is out of the box.
    I find the ride smooth and composed and poppy when I need it to be, I am an average rider and the only thing holding me back on this bike is me and my lack of skill. Jumping is very easy on this bike and it is very stable in the air.
    In closing, after reading the reviews that are available I was a little concerned due to comments about it being wallowy and not a good climber with dated seat angle, but the Australian support were amazing and went out of their way for a demo ride. I can sincerely say that those quibbles from others reviews are not what I am experiencing this thing. Hopefully it lasts an equal 9 years, and looking at the size of those suspension bearings it isnt going to have any problems there.
    If in doubt, go ride one and enjoy.

    The rear is average with that air shock and the steeply progressive leverage curve. Put a cc db il coil on it for top performance.

      Yeah, with the linkages and rubber armor, the frame alone is 2800g, plus the shock. Go for the Mojo 3 or 4 if you want a lighter bike, but the Primer is stiffer.

    Thanks for the review. I saw one of these at my local shop and was going to grab it since there's such a shortage on bikes. That said, the Expert weighing 32lbs and still costing $4k... that's a bit much for a Carbon bike that's heavier than some AL bikes. SOH on this is huge which is hard for a small rider like myself, but perfectly aligns with why it doesn't feel playful and poppy. Going to pass on this one, my hunt for a new bike continues.

      @@devinwillis7787 My last bike was a 2009 Norco Fluid, so I’m kind of catching up on modern bikes now that I I’m in the market again. Just like you said, most bikes in that 140mm travel range are about 30lbs. Originally I thought Carbon was all about weight savings but I think I’m learning that it’s more about frame stiffness and being a little lighter weight is just a bonus.

      @@Bohvey for anything this agressive they sacrifice weight for durability. You really can't beat the way carbon rides if it's in the budget but I don't think I was any less happy with my alu bikes

      It really is! Man I used to love the I9’s but have been really liking the quieter hubs these days.

      I had torch hubs on the wheels I got with my primer and swapped to 54T rachet DT swiss wheels. The noise is way way less and I find it better. The i9 were good but the engagement is basically the same with these hubs, weight isn't as I swapped off carbon hoops for AL. Being said....the "warning" that the i9 give is nice when you come up on hikers but a bell and "excuse me" work just fine for me.

    How has this reviewer never used a fork with fox fit4 damper before? It's been around for at least 4 years.

      Hey Mike, it’s just a matter of what I get given to test ride. I haven’t had Fox on my personal bike since 2016 so just haven’t had the chance! Definitely impressed with it!

      @@TheLoamWolf it sounds like you haven't tested/ridden an array of different suspensions. I'm not trying to be rude, it's just hard to take your opinion serious if you haven't demo'd the different suspensions available. If it's been that long since you've ridden fox, you haven't tried even GRIP, nor GRIP2.

      Cole only recently came on board as a tester and does not have the roughly 8-10 years of testing experience on every new product that comes out that some of our other testers have, especially since he was sponsored by DVO for a number of years. Now that he's doing more reviews he will be constantly riding new products, suspension platforms and designs, so his database and comparative analysis will change.
