There are a lot of things I have to say about this song after listening and rewatching a few times. Coming from a Korean background this hits different specifically because a lot of women in Korea are expected to essentially be mom 2.0 as wives traditionally. So with the lyrics like cooking and cleaning your room is poking fun at the men (and women) who expect them to be traditional wives in taking place of the mother. To be clear I'm Korean American so I'm speaking from experiencing both flavors of trad wife rhetoric. However, the funniest part of the joke (to me) is that when they say "but she is mm mm mm" is very much like a mom making grunts in disgust at the girl her son is bringing home. So in a way it's saying that you want a wife that is sexy and also your mom but your mom isn't going to approve of me and furthermore--I don't wanna be a wife anyway! The lines then go into a lot of double entendre where they say things a mom would say with a bit of a winky face paired with the choreo and line delivery. The whole song is making fun and teasing the logic of what is expected of a wife (and the assumption that women want to be wives automatically). While watching this video I also noticed that they paid special attention to their feet in the choreo when they say the second "Want me your wife but she is" in the chorus. When they say the word 'wife' they point to their feet and when it's Miyeon and two perspectives, the shoe is literally stepping on the other members. It's essentially also saying that what you want is a woman you can walk all over. Then in the end they pull the rug out from under you saying I don't wanna be a wife anyway lol. The song is really fun and has a childish teasing to it because it's ridiculous. The reaction from Korea has also been particularly funny to me (as a Korean woman). There are a lot of comments like "I'm a wife and I'm offended at these lyrics. What do they think a wife is?" and "Why are they so provocative and then say they don't want to be a wife anyway?" The comments are also criticizing them for not being kid friendly and I don't think I really need to go into the irony of that. I normally don't really look so deeply into their songs even as a fan, but this song being released after all of the concept photos they've been releasing was such a 180, that I knew it was intentional and I had to really look into it. Knowing how Soyeon works as an artist, she doesn't do anything without intention. I can already see people say I'm reading too much into it etc etc, but I come from a performing arts background so that is what is informing my opinion. if you want to listen to a great album by them, i would recommend "i burn", it's very cohesive, the meaning behind each song is beautiful and it's overall an almost spiritual experience lol it's also a good way to start to listen to more of the producer line of the group! (wich is not only soyeon, but minnie and yuqi also write and produce some of the bsides!!) if you are looking for b-sides to get into them, the ones that stand out most and attract more stans i'd say are: $$$, put it straight (both the normal version and nightmare version), blow your mind, moon, hann (alone in winter), dahlia, already, dark (x-file) and lucid

Two things I found interesting about the mv was that: 1. They all had one shoe that had chains on it instead of laces (like representing a ball and chain) and 2. They didn’t lip sync to most of the lyrics which seemed like they were representing the “quiet, speaks when spoken to wife” but they did lip sync the last part where they were saying that they don’t want to be a wife. I’d recommend looking up a translation of the lyrics with footnotes explaining some of the Korean slang because it kinda ties it together.

It’s not spelled out how explicit/sexual it is on paper but if you read between the lines like you do with New Jeans song called Cookie, you get it. Except this song is even more so. (For example: she cooked some cream soup but you need to eat the cherry first. And make sure you swallow and if you’re “good” she will too.(extra detail: they whisper this line!)) This song in its structure reminds me of JJ Fad's "Supersonic". The backing track is simple, but it works. Miyeon, Shuhua and Minnie being the main rappers on this track is crazy...they are killing it. The first time I saw it, I was also like "What the heck did I just watch?", but I also immediately loved it as well for it's very much early to mid 80s hip hop sound. Great reaction as always.

I love the small details (G)-idle uses. Like them not lip syncing is to show how wives are supposed to be quite and the “umm umm” in the song is like that wife should always agree

Two things I found interesting about the mv was that: 1. They all had one shoe that had chains on it instead of laces (like representing a ball and chain) and 2. They didn’t lip sync to most of the lyrics which seemed like they were representing the “quiet, speaks when spoken to wife” but they did lip sync the last part where they were saying that they don’t want to be a wife.
I’d recommend looking up a translation of the lyrics with footnotes explaining some of the Korean slang because it kinda ties it together.

🙋🏻♀️Korean/English speaker here. When I listened to the song for the first time I was blown away how explicit the song is. Super catchy and now my favorite. It’s not spelled out how explicit/sexual it is on paper but if you read between the lines like you do with New Jeans song called Cookie, you get it. Except this song is even more so. (For example: she cooked some cream soup but you need to eat the cherry first. And make sure you swallow and if you’re “good” she will too.(extra detail: they whisper this line!))

This song in its structure reminds me of JJ Fad's "Supersonic". The backing track is simple, but it works. Miyeon, Shuhua and Minnie being the main rappers on this track is crazy...they are killing it. The first time I saw it, I was also like "What the heck did I just watch?", but I also immediately loved it as well for it's very much early to mid 80s hip hop sound. Great reaction as always.
