    This is a coverstitch machine. It's a specialized serger that can be used to sew flat hems and flat felled seams. It's great because the stitches offer a lot of stretch which is perfect for knits and other stretch fabrics. It can also be used to sew chain stitches.

    Coverstitch machines are really underrated. I recently picked up a coverstitch machine that also includes a top looper (Brother 3550CV) so I can do actual flatlock seams on activewear. It's a shame the feature isn't available on more machines, it's pretty magical (the only other one I know of is the Janome CoverPro 3000).

    • @CorneliusQuiring
      @CorneliusQuiring  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Oh snap, that is a wonderful feature indeed to have it on both sides. I hope you're enjoying your machine and getting plenty of use out of it.

    I remember those bags of grain/feed from my childhood on the farm. When I got into sewing, I got excited when I found out what a chain stitch was because I had used it before. I just had never sewn one. I should use my cover stitch machine more. Thanks for the reminder.

    For years, I've debated on whether or not to purchase a cover stitch machine, because for what it does, I wasn't sure it would be worth the money. Your video has given me a little food for thought. Lastly, it is such a joy to support your channel because your content is exceptional and always very useful.

      I bought one a year ago and am still on the fence. If you do a ton of knits, then it’s probably worth it. If not, then I’d say no. It’s got a learning curve I’ve still not mastered. I hate the sound it makes, ugh. So ugly when I’m used to the smooth sound of vintage machines. I’ve tried double needle stitching and can’t master that, apparently, no matter the machine I use.

    In school we only had bernina machines from the 80s, so no serger and I learned to sew stretch/serge with a zigzag stitch. Its probably less stable but it works quite well

    I recently bought a Euphoria coverstitch. I found it gets gnarly if you go over seams, I need to practice dealing with that. Also, if you are hemming certain knits that do not get a good crease with the iron, it can get wonky... especially if you have to stitch on the right side. I found I can stabilize the fabric with water soluble thread (also available at Quality Sewing) on the wrong side, and regular thread in the bobbin. I have a guide with the bobbin thread when doing the hem stitch on the right side, and it falls away when you rinse out the soluble thread.

    Oooh you’re getting fancy . That’s a very nice machine. I love a knee lift. I haven’t decided if I really need a cover stitch machine yet. I’ve got my sights on a new serger/overlocker. I know there are combo machines but I have not seen the best reviews on them.

    • @CorneliusQuiring
      @CorneliusQuiring  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I feel very fancy too :) I am luck to have gotten it. I figured it was best to get a dedicated machine myself as well rather than a combo one. Hopefully you do get the serger and it gets plenty of use.

    Love to see a cover stitch video on your channel. Just got one a few months ago.
    Do you ever use the cover stitch in the round for your hems? I’m having trouble with this, but I like the look of it much better because it makes the hem look much cleaner without seeing the side seam on the bottom.

    • @CorneliusQuiring
      @CorneliusQuiring  Před 4 měsíci

    I am quite interested in that "serging/threading" toggle you demonstrate at 10:02, what does that do?

    • @CorneliusQuiring
      @CorneliusQuiring  Před 4 měsíci

      Oh nice! I hope you like your machine. When I put the dial to threading, it engages the air compressor to thread the machine and then putting it back to serge is just the regular cover stitch sewing.

  • @davidanddavidstrading
    @davidanddavidstrading Před 4 měsíci

    What is that white singer you always use? Looks like a 327 or something....Sounds so nice, and what a solid straight stitch. The cover stitch is the next purchase.. I bought a 4 thread serger thinking that I could get it doing one, but it will not...

    I have a serger that will do chain and up to 5 thread serge and you can convert it for the cover stitches all in one. Also I have an old chainstitcher that does strait stitch only, the interesting thing I discovered recently is I can embroider with this one as well. Lots of interesting machines out there.
