Hey Geoff. Thanks for this update. You've been working hard and making plans and sowing your first seeds for 2024.
Pity the peppers didn't work but it's always worth a try. The sugar snaps are coming on.
The Silver Appleyard has given up on her eggs but it's great that another one has started to lay.
Best wishes for 2024 Geoff. Johnny and Jacob.
Yes, I'm hoping the largefowl appleyards continue to lay as I want to hatch more of those. All the best for New Years' 😄
Great, they are a lovely bird. Thanks Geoff. Here's to 2024. Johnny and Jacob.@@BrimwoodFarm
I really like how you said you had a "ferret" around the farm. No one says that these days.
🤣🤣 we need to bring it back into style.
I use no dig also! Saves my back. And preserves the microbial infrastructure of the soil.
Totally! So many pro's
Thank you for sharing. It's wonderful to see the trees grow day by day
I HAVE THE SAME Cat litter box! I use it because I took the old box out to be a nest box too. Cat litter boxes are a great nest box!
Great job Geoff! I think I have to go back and watch a few missed videos! Having your own homestead in the making certainly limits time for vicariously living through others' homesteads 😂😂
They're great, as are old cat carry boxes. I was going to throw it out and then realised what I could use it for!
And I know ... I tend to use these long darker evenings to try and catch up!
Hi Geoff. You are making great progress. Have a wonderful, peaceful New Year and a fantastic growing season. All the best from sunny Scotland. Mags.
Thanks Mags! A sunny Scotland is glorious! Have a lovely New Year 😊
I tryed saving peppers and chillies you need tropical temps.you are doing the right thing to start again get them germinated now they need a long season.happy new year for you and stock😊
And the same to you. Yes - I think it might be more trouble than it's worth!!
This makes me so happy. I think I'm going to buy a poly tunnel this yr. I live in zone 4 😢 i am envious of your mild climate there.
I think we take it for granted sometimes! I couldn't bear months of snow, that's for sure.
Wishing you lots of good things for the New Year and all of 2024!
Thanks Fiona, and to you 😊😊
A few thoughts from a few years watching but never commenting;
One of the biggest issues is your propagation setup. It should not be outside as it is too susceptible to rain, damp, sudden temp changes, wind, etc. Seedlings like consistency. It should be moved into your polytunnel.
Secondly you should use specific seedling compost not homemade stuff. I now it is more expensive but considering you can get 1000s of plants from a bag those seedlings will be stronger and healthier which will return the initial cost 100 times over.
Regarding your soil some it seems to very compacted (although hard to tell from the videos). If this is the case you should dig it over, even Charles Dowding recommends that in cases of compacted soil you need to dig it once initially as the no dig does not alleviate compacted soil.
You need to scale up your market garden significantly. Look at Essex Allotment Garden for an idea of scale. I would recommend that for 2024 you grow at almost full scale even if you do not have the customers yet. Whilst this will cost you a bit more in seeds and time, the lessons learnt in terms of production volumes, harvesting periods, etc will be invaluable for when you do scale up. You should also be using the time in which you do not have the customers to prepare the soil as that is the most time consuming. You can use it as an opportunity to experiment with different varieties and sowing dates so you can be the most prepared.
All great advice, Lucan, thanks. Past few years has deffo been a struggle and learning curve, but going into 2024 being on site I have SO much more time and looking forward to it. From this year - I did NOT grow enough! 😆😆 so yeah, deffo going full throttle - any excess I can eat, sell on farm gate, feed to animals, so nothing really lost.
Happy new year. Looks like things are happening the peas look great. Might try some in the green house.
Definitely worth it - and the pea shoots are oh so tasty! Happy New Year to you too :)
I think another reason your peppers didn't make it is because 0:11 you ripped them out of the ground. I take a big shovel and dig them out... enough for a gallon pot. 💖🌞🌵😷
I did have a little trowel ... but I should've guessed they wouldn't make it because their root balls weren't very large either.
@@BrimwoodFarm , if you listen 0:11, you can hear all the roots snapping. 😆. Ps. You're the first person I've talked to in the new year! Happy New Year! Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵 USA! 😷.
"Acclimatize!" It's wonderful to hear the correct word used rather than that made up word that our North American friends use! "Acclimate!" I hate that word. It's not a real word. It's made up. It doesn't even sound like a real word. LOL. Anyway, Happy New Year Geoff.
Also, even if it were a word, they put the emphasis in the wrong place 'ack - li - mate'. Drives me nuts! Happy New Year to you too :D
Your video is really amazing. Best wishes to you. go ahead
I think that if you had lifted the peppers up with little or no disturbance to the roots, literally in ball of soil you probably would have been successful. When I saw you shake off the soil I sort of knew they wouldn’t survive.
I agree. But also I think the soil came away so easily because the roots were already dead. They really shouldn't have come out of the ground so easily!

Our green house broken by storm. 😢
Oh no, so sorry!
