    This song helped to get me married. I visited my FB friend on the other side of the continent for the first time and we shared music. I left her with this to listen to. She had it on repeat, discovering more music with every listen. Eventually she came to me to listen to it and more SX in person. Now married for 3 years

      cool story. I didn't end up married from this song, but I and my girfriend at the time spent an entire day listening to each other's musical tastes. It was an interesting experience to say the least. Let me preface by saying that i was in Japan and met Aoi (the girl) at a manga store in akihabara (at the time i was somewhere between jlpt2 and jlpt3. so not flutent, but comfortable enough to hold a basic conversation. Unforntately several of the conversations we had would not really be considered...basic. I still don't know why she chose me (I later found out that she was a professional model), I guess it was sheer providence, or maybe rebellion. Anyway, she listened to a lot of j-rock, j-pop, and k-pop. Aparently my taste shocked and even reduced her to tears a couple of times (i did have to translate a bit but we bonded over music). She took it upon herself to be my guide in toyko for the week i was there, and we had a lot of fun. All good things must come to an end though. I left tokyo once my time up. I was sad, but we both knew going in to this relationship that it wouldn't be a long term thing. I now wish i had stayed for the addional week i had instead of moving on to Hokkaido.

    The chorus sections of part three are the most powerful and beautiful I've ever heard. The second one in particular, how Allen holds that note long into the beginning of it. And the third one has that super syncopated, odd timing buildup to it - that is an obvious homage to Jacob's Ladder by Rush.

  • @TranscendingTheVoid

  • @DeagleLas
    @DeagleLas Pƙed 2 lety +8

    Awwright! Russell Allen is probably the best vocalist you can hear live nowadays. He's brilliant and has a really wide range and textures. The guitarrit and composer, Michael Romeo, is the brain behind the band and he's a genius. Underrated, in my humble opinion. The band is something closer to Dream Theater or Rhapsody about style or sound. But these guys are probably the ones who did a better approach to what Sypmhonic Rock meant on the '60s and '70s. For example, the syncopation you talk about at the end of the video, it's a sort of cover from the "Mars, bringer of War" from the Gustav Holst symphony of The Planets. There is another song in their catalog (don't remember which), where they do an actual cover of Mars.
    You have to get deeper into this rabbit hole! I'm still here!

    • @phantazm28
      @phantazm28 Pƙed 2 lety +4

      The other song you're thinking of is probably Divine Wings of Tragedy (great song), since after the choir intro it swaps to Mars. I believe the choir part was quoted from something by Bach too, Michael Romeo loves sprinkling pieces of classical music into the songs.

  • @tomseaver1496
    @tomseaver1496 Pƙed 2 lety +14

    Yes!!!! More Symphony X, and in a long format - what a great time mang! As others have suggested, you should do yourself a favor and check out their song “The Odyssey” - it’s a telling of the Homer classic and the arrangement has multiple movements, which would be perfect for your long-format shows 😉.
    Also, for more symphonic metal check out Rhapsody (which later had to rename to Rhapsody of Fire). A real fun one is “The Wizard’s Last Ryhmes” which might remind you of a certain Dvorak symphony. More straightforward tracks are “Knightrider of Doom” and “Dawn of Victory”, but you can’t really go wrong with any of their tracks.
    Hope the good recovery continues and looking forward to the next one đŸ€™đŸ€™đŸ€™

    Been a big SyX fan since about 2000/2001 and over all those years my best guess to the "symphony" being in the name is due to all the classical music influences in the composition/writing style of Michael Romeo (guitarist/main songwriter).

    Pretty sure that Symphony X predate the modern concept of "symphonic metal" which Nightwish is definitely the definitive voice in the evolution of that subgenre (though not the first! Check out Therion - Birth of Venus Illegitima), and that the Symphony in their name is more a nod to their classical music influence, not in relation to having a necessarily symphonic sound. They definitely are more in line with the Dream Theater style of prog metal as opposed to the more "djent" of Animals of Leaders or whatever you call Ne Obliviscaris... rock on my friend!

    YEEEES! Sad Wings of Destiny (the album before this one, 'twilight in olympus') Is a classic. The album after this one (V: the mythology suite) is one of my favorites as well. For whatever reason, Jason Rullo did not play drums on this record.
    You just earned yourself a cup of coffee, homie! Tip on the way

    Nightwish is more influenced by film scoring, especially Disney films. Their music is supposed to be very theatric and epic while Symphony X is more influenced by traditional classical music, Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, and Cacophony with progressive elements throughout like Dream Theater.

    Great song this album was rushed I heard the band was pissed at Brian Slagal for demanding a new album so quick it sounds alright but with more time this could have been a fantastic album. Also check out Pagans mind. Circus Maximus and Adagio

    When you hear those blazing solos, Romeo usually doubles them, note for blazing note. Ridiculous.

    IMO this would be prog+power metal with classical influences. The intensity is irrelevant as they go full circle.

    I love love LOVE Symphony X, but I can’t go back any further than “The Odyssey”. ‘90s production ethos is a real turnoff for me musically, but these guys are great and I hope to hear more(newer) stuff from them here. :)
