  • In this video, the transfer characteristics of the JFET has been explained.
By watching this video, you will learn the following topics:
1:10 What is Transfer Characteristics of JFET
2:21 How to draw Transfer Characteristics from the drain curve (For n-channel JFET)?
4:10 Calculation of drain current using the Transfer Characteristics
7:05 Transfer Characteristics of the p-channel JFET
    What is Transfer Characteristics :
The Transfer characteristic is the plot which defines the relationship between the input and the output quantity (voltage and/or current) of the device.
For the JFET, it is the relationship between the input Gate to Source Voltage (Vgs) and the output drain current Id. (Keeping Voltage Vds constant)
For JFET, it is also known as the transconductance curve.
Unlike the BJT, the transfer curve for the JFET is non-linear.
Using this transfer curve, it is possible to find the biasing point of the JFET.
In this video, the transfer characteristics of the n-channel and p-channel JFET has been discussed. And using the mathematical expression of the transfer characteristics how the drain current of the JFET can be found is also discussed.
This video will be helpful to all the students of science and engineering in understanding the transfer characteristics of the JFET.

The transfer function I believe would need to use the absolute value of Vgs since it is normally negative. One of my biggest problems in electronics is keeping the signs correct.

Showing how to bias the get and obtaining the desired gain would be very interesting.
I assume the slope of the curve would correspond to current gain.

Thank you, Sir. At time 2:36 you show the ohmic region for Vds between 0 volts and Vp. Is there an equation that describes this region? I’d like to be able to generate this plot for an MPF102 FET. I.e., I’d like to plot the family of curves in the right plot that are parametrized by values of Vgs.

    • @ALLABOUTELECTRONICS
      @ALLABOUTELECTRONICS  Před 4 lety

If you have followed the previous video on the construction and working of the JFET, then for p-channel JFET, the drain current was assumed to be the outgoing current from the drain terminal. The source current is incoming current to the source terminal.
Based on that, the transfer characteristics have been drawn.
