Designed under the guidance of Bruno Sacco, Head of MB Styling, the R170 SLK, meaning "Sport Light Kurz (Short)" harked its design back to that of the iconic Mercedes-Benz 190SL from the 1950s with the new SLK sharing, not only a similar wheelbase but also, in its original form, a 4 cylinder engine, this being a 2.3 litre Kompressor (193bhp super-charged) motor. The SLK launched in late '96 and was placed straight into the competitive cabriolet market place, taking on both the MGF, Boxster, Alfa Romeo Spider and MX5 but unlike the others with a 'fabric' hood the SLK held the trump card with its electro-hydraulic Vario-roof which could convert the car from a hard-top to sleek and svelte cabrio in just 25 seconds.
Three years after launch Mercedes supplemented the engine line up with the introduction of a 2.0 litre Kompressor, a silky smooth 3.2 litre V6 engine offering 215bhp and then in 2001 with the limited production AMG Supercharged version offering 349bhp! The R170 SLK remained in production until 2004 its popularity never waining and it's only now some 27 years since launch and 2 further incarnations since that Mercedes has now ceased production of this über stylish cabrio.

Having come from a fastidious, long term owner, driving the car just 1500 miles in 8 years, dry road use only this SLK 320 remains in simply stunning condition, the Black exterior looks amazing and the original AMG staggered and diamond cut 17” alloys (with a brand matched set of tyres, 6mm+) are factory fresh with this extending further to the amazing Designo two-tone interior which remains in showroom condition too, this SLK 320 really is a class apart! There are 10 services recorded at an indicated; 1809 miles, 4586 miles, 4681 miles, 4894 miles, 5618 miles, 11382 miles, 11800 miles, 12045 miles, 12295 miles, 12379 miles and all being a 50/50 split of Mercedes-Benz main dealer and then self service….but please note the previous owner held a senior engineering post within the F1 industry! The car now shows an incredibly low 12525 miles with the mileage being further substantiated with DVLA print-out of previous MOT history.
Firing up the 3.2 litre V6 engine is a delight, the 215bhp being more than sufficient to propel this stylish vario-roof cabriolet to a sub 7sec 0-60mph time and on to 150mph where roads allow…….but the truth be told this SLK 320 is not about brutish performance its more a boulevard cruiser and a car that any owner would be proud to own. Correct in every way and ready to offer its new owner quality and style, at a fraction of her 'as new’ price and as a modern classic a car that would happily grace any classic car show lawn, this SLK 320 is enthusiasts delight!

What did this example sell for? I bought mine a few months ago for $6500 except it's a silver manual with a full black interior
