Not saying Souness was a good or bad player but to say he was better than any player in Scotland at time is a little disrespectful. Before Souness and Murray took over rangers and bring in the English players who were banned from European football, did Scottish football not do well in European competitions? Yes he changed the landscape of Scottish football, but not for the best.

But there is a lot of footballers from Catholic countries who are big on football, so of course it allowed Rangers to expand their net. It's a numbers thing. For any club to restrict their signing policy to exclude the world's most populous religion was folly.
