I am 73 years old and have been using the Svea 123r since the 1960's. I figured out a neat way to start it. Just tear off a small piece of paper towel, toilet paper will not work. Roll it long ways between your fingers. Then open the fuel cap and dip the rolled paper towel into the ful and let it soak up some gas. Put the rolled paper towel in the preheating cup, being careful not to let it get near the fuel cap so you don't burn the o ring. Jut light it and open the vaqlve when it gets hot. That way you don't have fuel running down the outside of the stove.

Nice video, Dave. I have the Optimus Crux stove with the Terra Weekend HE Cookset. The Crix stove is extremely small and light and it uses the butane containers for fuel. The 8 ounce butane containers fit perfectly inside the cookset, along with the Crux stove and a Bic lighter. I’ve had this setup since about 2011 or 2012 and have always loved it. Very quick to set up and take down, small and compact, light weight, super easy to use and clean up. I’ve taken it regular camping, backpacking for multiple days, day hikes and road trips, you name it. It gets used plenty but never fails. I’m getting my new-to-me pickup set up the way I want and this cookset will have a home in there so it is with me at all times, unless I’m backpacking.
In my morning routine while on my outings, I fill the pot full of water and heat to a near boil. Then I make a large cup of coffee, have enough water for 2-3 packets of oatmeal, and have enough warm water leafy to wash my spoon and oatmeal bowl when finished eating. I can boil a pot full of water in 3-5 minutes, nearly always, even when temps are near freezing.
I did speak with someone at the company a few years ago about using the pot on an open flame and they said they recommend against it. To hot o fla,e could damage the Heat Exchanger, and soot and ash buildup inside the coils of the exchanger could render it ineffective.
I have no experience with the Svea stove so cannot comment on it. But white gas stoves of other types I’ve had always worked well too, so I’m sure it’s as good as your description.
Id highly recommend this setup to anyone.

Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your awesome comment, Dale! Sounds like you have an excellent setup there! I can definitely see how the open fire would ruin the heat exchange system. You are exactly right...all types of white gas stoves work really well! -Dave

I had a Svea 123 and was the balkiest, most difficult stove to start. I finally pitched it. But you impressed me with using the Otimus cooking gear.

I just received my SVEA 123R last week and didn’t try turning to such a low simmer. Trying MSR blended fuel, expensive but burns clean and was only fuel the store had on the shelf. Will keep in mind the cook set although I’m Leary of any aluminum cookware. Great though the way you packaged the stove. Thanks for the ideas.

A suggestion from someone who still uses a Svea 123 purchased in 1974 - when you lower the flame to simmer, it can build up carbon in the burner jet, and after long usage, in the vaporizing tube. The yellow flame is the worst. Before you shut off the stove, crank it up as high as it will go, and let it burn for a minute, (Sometimes you will see small sparks in the flame as the carbon burns off) then shut it down. My stove is the older model that does not have the cleaning needle, so after the stove is extinguished, I reopen the valve for a few seconds and let some of the pressurized fuel vapor escape, doing a final cleaning of the jet. This has worked for me for more than 40 years. Take care of that stove and it will outlast you!

I have the same cook set and really like it. I use a Optimus Crux stove which I really like. The Crux defuses the flame over a wider area than my MSR Pocket Rocket. Dave, I have a Soto Amicus Stove with four folding pot stand legs.
I wonder if the Optimus Terra Weekend HE Cook Set would work with other gas stoves.
I have the Soto Cook Set, but I also like the heat exchange feature on the Optimus cook set.
In any event, it was great spending time with you again, and it would be nice if some of us could actually spend some time together out on a backpacking and bushcraft adventure.
Until then, it looks like the videos will have to suffice.

I never had any issues ever with these stoves on outings. I would love to have one 123R or an 8 R in addition but some how I am afraid of the fuel these stoves use. Is my fear unfounded?

Its been on and off. We've had a lot of snow, and then it melts and floods and then a lot of snow again. Life in western New York State. Thank you for taking the time to stop by, my friend! -Dave

very good setup, Can you use High sprite alcohol like Moonshine or Vodka / Rum instead of white gas ?? B.cos they have more usages than only fuel

I've only used white gas in this stove so I cannot say that another fuel will or will not work. I have heard that stuff like HEET in the tank doesn't work well, at all. Thank you for taking the time to stop by, my friend! -Dave

Love the Svea, but dislike the Optimus Terra as the coating or what ever it is called on the inside does not stand for much before it begins to "peel". Pots with a heat-ex-changer on a burner like the Svea results in more carbon monoxide, so beware if you use this setup inside a tent (or rather - don't do it!). I carry my Svea wraped in a thin plastic bag - inside a Snow Peak Titanium Trek 900 pot.

Thank you for watching! Sorry to hear about the peeling that you've experienced. Mine has yet to start to come undone for me. You are exactly right and I would never use this setup in an area that isn't well ventilated. Nice setup you have there, my friend! -Dave

Hi Dave, That is a great cook set. A friend of mine has that along with the Optimus stove. He boils 2 cups of water in like a minute. Not an ultra light setup but still pretty darn light for the convenience, and it does save a lot of fuel. I just posted my very first CZcams video. If you get bored I'd appreciate it if you check it out. Oh and what you say at the end of your video applies to mine as well. LOL.... I'm really looking for subscribers and I'm good friends with The Common Sense Camper. ;-)
