I have this phallic roman statuette that I feel can't possibly be real... but I don't know how to find out lol. Only paid 40 euros for it so it's reasonable as shelf decoration goes 😂
One of my professors in Uni taught every lesson with the use of Roman coins, which has since gotten me incredibly interested with actually owning a small piece of the ancient world. The nails sold are the perfect piece. Proper utilitarian artifact, no ethical concerns in terms of theft, nor spiritual significance. Great stuff all around Garret!

I always enjoyed walking past the Berk windows in Chicago (in the Temple Building, which also houses the “tallest church in the world”).
I collect antique bottles so it's very reassuring to hear that Roman glass bottles are easily procured! I will be sure to buy one soon!

Is there anything rivaling that one lamp in complexity in Antiquity or is it rather singular? It seems quite the radical departure from the other ones shown and others I've seen, even some of the more exotic ones look nothing like that thing.

Did ancients from other cultures have any particular opinions about it ?
And, btw, your work continues to set the standard for history on CZcams. In particular, your Blair Witch trek thru a Roman ghost town in Turkey was most evocative.
QUESTION: Why did the late-antiquity/early-medieval imperial church/papacy remain in Rome and not move to the more important and secure Constantinople ?
There was already a Pentarch in Constantinople, the Ecumenical Patriarch, the Pope was the Pentarch of Rome so his seat and administrative responsibilities were in Rome, regardless of whether Odoacer sent the imperial regalia back or whether the capital had long since been changed. At this point in ecclesiastical history the Pope's authority in the Church was not supreme over the other Pentarchs or the Emperor, that comes later.

I don't know but I would guess that it also is because of the link with Saint Peter, the popes are supposed to be taking his place as the bishops of Rome so moving elsewhere they would lose that connection.

"Servants" were common. Systems for legally bonding people have existed for thousands of years. Colloquially referred to as slavery... a modern equivalent would be incarceration.

Given our almost ludicrous amount of evidence for grave-robbing in Egypt it's pretty easy to delineate between a group of men breaking in to secure precious metals and stones to profit from, leaving all treasures unable to be recycled or fenced, and a group of men breaking in to secure all materials within and document the findings for the purposes of the advancement of human knowledge.
You can argue about the morality of disturbing graves for any reason, but to wantonly conflate the two because of a moral objection both disregards the qualitative differences in the activities and demeans the noble intentions of people who are attempting to preserve our patrimony.
Greek, Egyptian, Persian, etc. = NOT Roman

Rubbish. You are reacting to his professional confidence which he has earned DEALING with crooks who have tried to trick someone.
I worked in our families scrapyard for 32 years. I would have the same confidence when I took one look at a piece of metal and told you "That's not good stainless, take it off that pile and put it with the crap there" or when I said no it isn't when you claimed something was gunmetal. Or when you claimed something was silver, or gold, or tungsten, or tin, or titanium or any of the really expensive metals, I can literally look at them across a room and know the truth.
I could then go on to prove it to you scientifically in each case, BUT I WOULD NOT.
The MOMENT you said "What a crook" to my professional opinion expressed in the course of my work, I would say "Out you go, sonny, I am too busy working to play with a child".

The only way this * can offer "certificates, of course" is because some markets and places are run as criminal organisations from the start. He disregards professional behaviour with the demeanor of some 19th century grave robber, and for heavens sake his whole face twists when he thinks of money.

Is it a vibe or do you have experience with this dealer? Or did you just have a bad experience or cynicism around collecting antiquities? I know some people just flat out discount it because of a lack of certainty and the potential for fraud, despite there being methods for sussing such stuff out within reason.
